  1. Isn't Mack brown younger than Riley? Or at least was when he stopped coaching at Texas? Maybe, which is part of why we never should have hired him.
  2. Solich is getting up there in years anyway. He's around the age where even coaches who were actually any good in the 1st place aren't good anymore. See Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno Frank Beamer and Mack Brown.
  3. Fired outright? Almost none. Maybe Dooley? If we look only at the NC winners, think the only coaches that didn't make it through at least 4 seasons at the same school past his first down season were Holtz (who retired amid NCAA investigations after posting back to back 8-3 and 9-3 top 25 seasons) and Robinson, who retired. Oh, and I forgot about Woody Hayes, who had 4 seasons that we described, including two outright losing seasons, after winning an NC. Well Solich was not a NC winner. Solich has won just as many national titles as you, me, Bill Calahan and Bo Pelin have- zero. And Larry Coker actually did win a NC and was fired after just 1 bad season, arguably 2 bad seasons if you count the season where they got blown out by LSU in the Peach Bowl. You know Coker the guy who Solich lost to by a score of 37-14. Coker and Solich took over probably equally good situations and both ultimately ruined them. For some reason I can't figure out Solich is a lot more highly regarded than Coker even though Coker's the guy who won a NC, lead the head to head meeting at halftime 34-0, and went to OT in a NC game the following year. they could have hired me (I would have been 5 at the time) and they still would have won the NC. Miami's team was too good that year not to win it all, no matter who was coaching. After year 1, when Solich went 9-4 while Coker went 12-0, their trajectories were almost exactly the same. Considering NU won 3 titles in 4 years before Solich there is not much of an argument Solich took over any worse of a situation than Coker did. If Osborne had still been NU coach in 1998, they may have gone 13-0 and been as dominant as 1995. (No I'm not saying that would have been the case I'm just saying it's possible.) Then there would probably be people years later who would be saying "That 1998 NU team was so talented any person on the sidewalk could have coached it to a NC." Little would they know that if Osborne had decided to retire after 1997, a guy named Frank Solich would have lead that team to a record of 9-4.
  4. Gene Chizik is also a NC winner (unlike Solich) and he was fired after just 2 bad seasons. Granted Chizik went 3-9 which Solich did not do.

  6. Lol at comparing Devaney to Solich. Devaney inherited what had been one of the most god awful programs in the country from 1941-61. Forget about taking a team over after a bad season or 2- Nebraska had performed similiar to worse than how Kansas and Colorado are currently performing for 21 years before Devaney. Of course Devaney couldn't win national titles as soon as he took over.
  7. Well who else in northern Maine would be the most popular? No FBS team let alone power conference team is anywhere nearby. Although granted UCLA and northern Maine are as far away as any 2 locations in the continental U.S. are.
  8. Look at how little of their own state the Terps control. The Rutgers and Maryland expansion was a humiliating beyond belief joke.
  9. I understand how there can be some weird results in the Dakotas or Montanas or Delawares or Maines of the world that have no FBS teams. But how is about half of Arizona ruled by either the Washington Huskies or Texas Longhorns? There are 2 BCS conference teams in the state.
  10. I think it would be hilarious if Riley gave the same 10 wins no excuses slogan Dan Hawkins gave. And then went 3-9 like Hawkins did.
  11. Who the hell leaves Nebraska for Colorado State. This is embarrassing. When I first read the thread title I thought it said Colorado. But losing a player to CSU?
  12. Riley did well in the 00s but has really sucked this whole decade. I think he might end up being the least successful of our 4 post Osborne coaches.
  13. We've been going in the wrong direction ever since Osborne announced his retirement.
  14. Who in the world can take a team with 3 titles in 4 years and go 9-4 in year 1? That is just astoundingly awful. Opponents of Solich mostly cite the 7-7 season but I want to cite the 98 season as well. If there ever has been a season where it was justified to fire a coach after 1 year this might have been it.
  15. He should have been fired after 02. There are 2 reasons why I still wish he had been dumped after 02. 1. If he had ended at 7-7 rather than 9-3, nobody would miss him. Nobody would argue his firing was unfair. 2. I have no idea who the new coach in 03 would have been. But hopefully his name wouldn't have been Bill Callahan.
