  1. Isn't Mack brown younger than Riley? Or at least was when he stopped coaching at Texas? Maybe, which is part of why we never should have hired him.
  2. Solich is getting up there in years anyway. He's around the age where even coaches who were actually any good in the 1st place aren't good anymore. See Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno Frank Beamer and Mack Brown.
  3. Fired outright? Almost none. Maybe Dooley? If we look only at the NC winners, think the only coaches that didn't make it through at least 4 seasons at the same school past his first down season were Holtz (who retired amid NCAA investigations after posting back to back 8-3 and 9-3 top 25 seasons) and Robinson, who retired. Oh, and I forgot about Woody Hayes, who had 4 seasons that we described, including two outright losing seasons, after winning an NC. Well Solich was not a NC winner. Solich has won just as many national titles as you, me, Bill Calahan and Bo Pelin have- zero. And Larry Coker actually did win a NC and was fired after just 1 bad season, arguably 2 bad seasons if you count the season where they got blown out by LSU in the Peach Bowl. You know Coker the guy who Solich lost to by a score of 37-14. Coker and Solich took over probably equally good situations and both ultimately ruined them. For some reason I can't figure out Solich is a lot more highly regarded than Coker even though Coker's the guy who won a NC, lead the head to head meeting at halftime 34-0, and went to OT in a NC game the following year. they could have hired me (I would have been 5 at the time) and they still would have won the NC. Miami's team was too good that year not to win it all, no matter who was coaching. After year 1, when Solich went 9-4 while Coker went 12-0, their trajectories were almost exactly the same. Considering NU won 3 titles in 4 years before Solich there is not much of an argument Solich took over any worse of a situation than Coker did. If Osborne had still been NU coach in 1998, they may have gone 13-0 and been as dominant as 1995. (No I'm not saying that would have been the case I'm just saying it's possible.) Then there would probably be people years later who would be saying "That 1998 NU team was so talented any person on the sidewalk could have coached it to a NC." Little would they know that if Osborne had decided to retire after 1997, a guy named Frank Solich would have lead that team to a record of 9-4.
  4. Gene Chizik is also a NC winner (unlike Solich) and he was fired after just 2 bad seasons. Granted Chizik went 3-9 which Solich did not do.

  6. Lol at comparing Devaney to Solich. Devaney inherited what had been one of the most god awful programs in the country from 1941-61. Forget about taking a team over after a bad season or 2- Nebraska had performed similiar to worse than how Kansas and Colorado are currently performing for 21 years before Devaney. Of course Devaney couldn't win national titles as soon as he took over.
  7. Well who else in northern Maine would be the most popular? No FBS team let alone power conference team is anywhere nearby. Although granted UCLA and northern Maine are as far away as any 2 locations in the continental U.S. are.
  8. Look at how little of their own state the Terps control. The Rutgers and Maryland expansion was a humiliating beyond belief joke.
  9. I understand how there can be some weird results in the Dakotas or Montanas or Delawares or Maines of the world that have no FBS teams. But how is about half of Arizona ruled by either the Washington Huskies or Texas Longhorns? There are 2 BCS conference teams in the state.
  10. I think it would be hilarious if Riley gave the same 10 wins no excuses slogan Dan Hawkins gave. And then went 3-9 like Hawkins did.
  11. Who the hell leaves Nebraska for Colorado State. This is embarrassing. When I first read the thread title I thought it said Colorado. But losing a player to CSU?
  12. Riley did well in the 00s but has really sucked this whole decade. I think he might end up being the least successful of our 4 post Osborne coaches.
  13. We've been going in the wrong direction ever since Osborne announced his retirement.
  14. Who in the world can take a team with 3 titles in 4 years and go 9-4 in year 1? That is just astoundingly awful. Opponents of Solich mostly cite the 7-7 season but I want to cite the 98 season as well. If there ever has been a season where it was justified to fire a coach after 1 year this might have been it.
  15. He should have been fired after 02. There are 2 reasons why I still wish he had been dumped after 02. 1. If he had ended at 7-7 rather than 9-3, nobody would miss him. Nobody would argue his firing was unfair. 2. I have no idea who the new coach in 03 would have been. But hopefully his name wouldn't have been Bill Callahan.
  16. So people are defending Solich by saying some of his teams were better than Osborne's 1990 club. Which was by far the worst team Osborne coached. Two of the 1990 team's losses were to Ga Tech and Colorado who split that year's national title. Those are far better than the teams the 2003 team lost to. Really the #24 final rating that team got was too low- around #15-17 would have been more reasonable. And the bottom line is that year was the low point of Osborne's tenure. Honestly I believe that Osborne's second worst team was better than every single Solich team except 1999. I'd have to look for a bit to even figure out what Osborne's second worst team was.
  17. So, where are all of Miles' National Championships? I mean, he does have all that talent. At least, according to you. You are either too young to remember, willfully ignorant of Osborne's career (outside of the mid to late '90s), a BRBer, or a troll, because your posts are chock full of Solich hate. The players of the 1990 team, didn't look like anything resembling the '93 through '97 teams. And that 1990 team was preseason #1 in at least one of the polls. They ended the year with two consecutive blowouts, albeit, to at least one who won a share of the MNC. And, if it wasn't for Bienemy's gifts in the form of 4 fumbles, CU would have blown them out in Lincoln. Solich's 2003 team would have defeated that 1990 team pretty easily. For those who still think Solich couldn't recruit, does the name Mike Rozier mean anything to you? Even a blind squirrel will find an acorn every once in awhile. I guess because he apparently recruited Rozier, that means that he didn't suck at recruiting as a Head Coach? Makes perfect sense to me. Miles does have a National Championship in 2007. IMAmaRedfan or whatever his name is has to then resort to call people who give facts as "ignorant" then makes a guarentee that one of the worst teams in NU history in 2003 would beat the 1990 NU team which was not preseason #1 and got as high as #3 before losing three of their last four games. Mainly because of Micky Flowers injury. But I am not supposed to know that because I am ignorant because I am willing to tell the truth that Frank destroyed NU football as we knew it. Saban was only .750 at LSU. Certainly good but not anywhere close to as he's done at Bama. Miles did not inherit anywhere close to as great of a situation as Solich did. Plus Miles is competiting against the SEC West division while Solich was in the Big 12 North. People always underrate Miles because he does some seemingly goofy moves that generally work out. Miles is a great coach no matter how unconventional he is.
  18. Analytics indicates that coaches should go for 4th down a lot more often than they do rather than always sending the punter or FG kicker out. Not sure what else football analytics indicates. Well I'm sure analytics indicates that NU sucks at hiring coaches ever since Osborne left but you don't need an analytics department to figure that out.
  19. With a decent coach Oregon and Ohio State would be our only two games and possible losses. Heck Oregon may not even be that good since it seems like Helfrich may be the next Frank Solich or Larry Coker guy who goes downhill after initially succeeding off another coach's momentum. Our division of the Big 10 sucks- let's be honest. With a decent coach we'd go 6-0 vs our division. But since Riley is coach we'll go 6-6 or 7-5. If lucky breaks go our way maybe 8-4, but I think that's unlikely.
  20. Was the Colorado game originally scheduled to have been played the Saturday after September 11? That might be the case but I doubt it since CU capped our regular season almost every year after the Big 12 separated into divisions. I'm not sure why else people would be talking about changing the date 2 games were played- that's one of the oddest hypotheticals I've ever heard. If we're on those types of hypotheticals, 1983 Nebraska would have beaten 1983 Miami on almost any date if that date hadn't been January 1,1984. Even if the game were played in the Orange Bowl, Nebraska would have won if the game were on 1/2/1984, 12/31/1983, or any of the 12 dates in the regular season. Osborne wouldn't have had to coach for more than 20 years before getting a national title. But the only results that count are the results from January 1,1984. And guess what? The only NU-CU result from 2001 that counts is the result from 11/23/2001. Colorado 62 Nebraska 36. Not what would have happened if a bunch of Muslim terrorists hadn't crashed into NYC and Washington DC buildings and caused CFB games for 9/13/2001 to be postponed.
  21. Or what if the timing of our games would have been different? What if our week 3 and week 9 games had been switched around? In 2001 we didn't make it to the B12 CCG. Nonetheless, we got into the Rose Bowl with Miami because we were ranked so highly. But if our week 12 game (Colorado blowout) and week 3 game (Notre Dame win) had been switched around, we would have had an early loss and probably wouldn't have been ranked higher than 7th or 8th by the end of the year. We would not have gotten into the Rose Bowl, and would not have gotten creamed by Miami. And the blowout loss to Colorado would have been a distant memory followed by nine regular season wins. In that scenario there's almost no way Solich gets fired after the season. And as an added bonus, it would have been Colorado who got annihilated on national TV by the Hurricanes. Agree if we win the bowl game. Also that Colorado squad was hot at the end. Whos to say they couldnt have beaten Miami. Good point! CU early in the year was a different team than CU in December/January. The Buffs lost to Fresno first game of the year. Fresno! Then in October Texas wiped out Colorado 41-7. But after the Texas loss Colo ran the table all the way, until meeting #2 Oregon in their bowl. During that stretch CU beat Texas in the B12 CCG In December. Who knows, maybe we would have given the Buffs a run for their money back in September before they got hot? It certainly couldn't have been any worse than the beatdown that we took in November. So we might win the North Division and instead of getting routed by CU we might have been routed by Texas in the conference title game. Hooray! Under that circumstance Texas would have played Miami for the national title and we probably have lost badly in our BCS bowl to a team other than Miami. The good news under this circumstance is that then the Solich defenders wouldn't have the excuse of saying after the bowl rout "But they were playing an NFL team in the Miami Hurricanes." And 1995 Nebraska would have murdered that 01 Miami team. Heck that Miami team that routed Solich's NU almost lost 2 games. 2001 Miami beat Va Tech on an inexplicably dropped 2 point conversion pass that the posters on the site should have been able to catch and the Canes needed a 95 yard fumble return with under a minute left to clinch victory over Boston College.
  22. He inherited a program that had won 3 NCS in 4 years, which is something no program had done since 1946-49 Notre Dame. If it weren't for home team officiating vs FSU in the January 94 Orange Bowl, we would have had 4 titles in 5 years, which no team has done in the AP Poll era. (Maybe some ancient Minnesota Harvard or Yale teams did so before the polls.) In the 37 years before him we had gone .834 which is more than 50 points better than the next best team. (Penn State) The posters on this website might have been able to start 42-7 taking over in those circumstances. I still am mystified by the 9-4 record in 98 though- I'd argue that was an even worse coaching job than 03 because it was right after the 94-97 stretch. The 17-12 stretch to end his career showed what kind of coach he was. I'll admit that I was fooled by the 36-3 stretch before the CU game. I came to believe that 98 was just a tough transition period where the players were getting used to a new coach and Solich himself was learning how to be a head coach. The CU and Miami routs to end the season put a bad taste in my mouth and I had some doubts about him by the time those 2 games ended. After 02 I and most fans wanted him fired. If he had been fired after 7-7 in 2002, I doubt very many people would be questioning his firing and feeling nostalgia for him. But he got another year and was routed in 3 games vs a weak schedule and managed wins in the other 9. Since then he's been an 80-61 coach in the MAC. If he had gone .800 at Ohio with wins or at least appearances in BCS bowls maybe I'd think his firing was a mistake.
  23. The only reason why I wish he might have been kept for 2004 is because he would have gone 5-6 or 6-5 that year and nobody would have any nostalgia for him. That and maybe our AD hires someone other than Callahan for the 2005 season.
  24. It would have gone very similiar to the 17-12 span with 7 losses by 22 or more points (with 2 more losses by at least 15 points) he had to end his career. We might have gotten outscored by our opponents in that 29 game span. Lol at people saying he's great because he's gone slightly over .500 in the MAC.
