  1. The last several years they have played a Thanksgiving tournament. They must have upset ESPN last year by not participating in one of theirs because of Covid, so they had to make their own this year. They "hosted" a tournament with Southern, Tennessee State & South Dakota this year. Next year they will be back in en ESPN sponsored event. Most of the Christmas tournaments have become second rate because the NCAA has said they have to give players three days off for the holiday. With league play starting right around New Year's, it is hard to go to a tournament around Christmas, give the players three days off and be ready for conference play.
  2. Against K-State the high post was much closer to the 3 point line, than the free throw line most of the time. I think that was part of the problem with all of Walkers turnovers. When he "posted" at the 3 point line, there was no spacing to get the ball to anyone outside the 3 point line with any chance to shoot and there didn't seem to be any cutters for him to pass to either.
  3. It's almost like Hoiberg reads this board so he can keep us up to date.
  4. Has anyone seen/heard an update on Trey? I know they originally said he might be back by mid-January. I didn't see him using his scooter yesterday, so that seems like a good sign.
  5. Based on who was playing before Trey got hurt, it was Verge and then Trey sliding over from the 2 to the 1 when Verge was on the bench with Webster as the 3rd option and maybe Bryce somewhere in the mix too.
  6. I've said it before & I will keep saying it. They need a fu**in* point guard who want to get others involved. In the first 12 minutes when they played in their new style they looked really good. Everytime they reverted to their old ways they looked like $#!+.
  7. Husker women up to a 6 seed in ESPN's latest bracket projection. https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/30423107/ncaa-women-bracketology-2022-women-college-basketball-projections
  8. Ten B1G teams in the most recent ESPN bracket. https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/bracketology/ncaa-bracketology-projecting-2022-march-madness-men-field
  9. Auburn got away with a post season ban last year when they finished 13-14 and weren't going anywhere. There have been several teams in the last 3-5 years that did that. I think Oklahoma State did the same thing a couple of years back.
  10. I have reevaluated after the last two games. I think they have maybe 3 wins left for the season. Kennesaw State should be a win and pull off a couple of minor home upsets in conference. I had always assumed they would lose to Michigan & Auburn, but I thought they'd be in the game for more than the first five minutes.
  11. One thing that would help them be "a team" is a point guard who actually wants to get the rest of the team involved. I think part of the problem with their 3-point shooting is that Verge uses the pick & roll to go one on one so often that the perimeter players get stagnant and aren't ready to shoot when they actually get a pass. They also don't reposition when their player collapses to the lane because they seem to know that Verge is unlikely to get the ball to them. I know I'm throwing Verge under the bus for a lot of their issues, but it all starts with the guy with the ball in his hands all the time.
  12. I am usually pretty optimistic about Husker Hoops, but after the last two games I'm finding it hard to see anything positive for the rest of the season. I'm pretty close to the point where you stop playing players that definitely won't be back (Verge, Mayen, Webster) and let the players that should be returning take their lumps but get experience. Maybe things change when Trey gets back, but who knows.
  13. I'd love to see what they could do without Verge and a real point guard.
  14. They didn't have enough players to practice on Thursday, so Saturday should be fun.
  15. Right now NU has 10 scholarship players available unless they are going to burn redshirts for McPherson or Kojenets - Andre, Edwards, Lakes, Mayen, Bryce McGowens, Tominaga, Verge, Walker, Webster & Wilcher. I'm not sure who I'd like to see start, but I definitely want Verge & Mayen out of the starting lineup. Verge just doesn't work at the point & Mayen is useless if he's not making 3's because his defensive effort/ability is crap. I guess that makes Webster the starter at the point, but I'm not sure that's a great option either. They could try McGowens, but he is like a taller version of Verge - no passing allowed. Tominaga played point for the last couple of minutes vs Michigan, but I don't see him as the answer either. If Breidenbach wasn't injured, I'd start him over Mayen because at least he hustles. I don't see Lakes as the answer at the 4. Maybe go big and play Andre at 4 and leave Walker at 5, or go small and put Edwards at the 4? Wilcher seems to be better when he comes off the bench, but hasn't looked very good the last few games. I'm just glad I'm not Hoiberg and have to put a starting 5 together and find a rotation that works.
  16. If he is out for the season, he should be able to get get a medical redshirt since he's played less than 1/3 of the team's games. It may benefit both him & NU by getting him an "extra" year to work on his game & foot speed.
  17. I was shocked when I got to my car after sitting though the entire game and hear Kent P & Jake M trying to talk about sometimes you just run into a team that is on fire and no how hard you try to get out of the quicksand (I think they actually said "weeds") you can't. I was wondering if the game looked different from the other side of the court than it did from where I sat. When Fred came on to do his post game radio show and they tried to steer him into their narrative & he immediately threw the team under the bus for their effort. There were a few players who gave a consistent effort in a way that was useful. Tominaga, Andre and maybe Walker. Verge gives a consistent effort, I just don't see it as productive from a team standpoint. I think Breidenbach gives a good effort all the time, but sometimes he just looks awkward and creates problems.
  18. I hadn't even thought of him as Russ Westbrook lite, but it is a perfect description of him.
  19. A huge part of the problem is that when Verge drives and the defense collapses on him, none of the perimeter players reposition to create a passing lane. They just stand there like they are chained to the floor. I'm not sure if it's because of coaching (which I doubt), a lack of understanding from the players or Verge not being a willing passer or Verge not having the vision of a true point guard that knows where players should be vs where they were when he stated his drive.
  20. He wasn't bad at Tulsa. Not so great at Wake.
  21. Mark Turgeon is stepping down at Maryland. Danny Manning will be interim HC. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/32779473/maryland-terrapins-men-basketball-coach-mark-turgeon-steps-10-plus-seasons
  22. We drove the the hoop just as much & our guys frequently ended up on the ground with the cheerleaders or press sitting on the baseline with no foul called. It was like the refs could only see fouls on drives if the contact was above the shoulder.
