  1. "HuskerHacker" As for answering the comment above I find myself wondering if you asked yourself the simplest of questions. Too often we make faith to hard by overlooking the simplest of things. The one question rarely asked is this. Is there another proclaimed king that loved his people so that he gave himself as a sacrifice? Ponder that, reflect on his teachings, (love your enemy, turn the other cheek, feed the poor, cloth the naked, heal the sick, walk peacefully with love)" Is that really all it takes for you to accept a god? If someone just said "I'm a self proclaimed king...I love all of you...and I'll die for you". THAT'S the only proof you need for you to worship them? There are people walking this earth right now who do good things like that...but you don't accept them as a god do you? "Yes, the science of today and the non-believers will point to things that aren't explained by faith but they do so while staying blinded to the evidence that only faith provides" Such as? And you're going to have to define "faith" first. Such as? Someone who gets over the flu? A sprained ankle that gets better? Cancer that goes into remission? These things do happen naturally all the time. Unless maybe your miracles are happening all the time then too? That headache I had earlier today...cured by GOD! You only SEE them as miracles because you want to. But then you ignore all the healings that DON'T happen. Does god only help those who pray the hardest? What about healing amputees, too hard for him??? Like someone stopping to help change your tire on the side of the road? Really? Gold dust falling from the ceiling is a miracle to you? I had a spider fall down from the ceiling once. You might want to tell your god that gold dust is hazardous to our lungs Do some research on near death experiences. I just find it so funny how people see something like a dove flying off into the sunset and say "look an angel is watching over us". Or how in the recent school shooting you have pastors who say the one little girl was saved by divine intervention. What, the rest of the children weren't worthy enough to save? You're seeing what you want to see. Where some might see god saving the little girl, I just see a tragedy where an idiot walked into a school and killed some people...while some of those other people happened to live. It's just cause and effect. He happened to point the gun at some people and not others. Again, how is this your only prerequisite for a savior? It just has to be someone who says turn the other cheek and risks their life for you? I'm more than positive you can probably find another great, influential person who has lived over the years and has those kinds of traits. I'd even question why his death is considered the cruelest death ever...and for a loophole HE created. There have been many other people crucified over the years. Many in your Bible. And many others who have died much worse deaths than that. I'll never understand why a blood sacrifice is something that is so revered in Christian culture.
  2. I've always kind of wondered how someone who believes that god is "omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent" deals with things like Sandy Hook. Saying that god works in mysterious ways shouldn't be an acceptable answer. Whistlebritches, how would you have preferred such a God to be involved and acting in a situation such as that? The simple, easy answer is to intervene. Makes sense, as we probably would if we had the power. But why is He intervening? Because evil is afoot, but what is evil? It's anything against God. Therefore, we have a problem, because you and I commit and think evil things as well. Should we be intervened on, eliminated, stopped in our action? Well that takes away free will of creation, doesn't it? If we want God to intervene when evil will happen, the world would not be consistent and stable enough to truly be lived in in the first place, and if we want God to eliminate evil, we need to be consistent - where do you stop, the murder level, the lying level, the thinking level? Maybe that's not what you would expect of God, but I am interested to hear your thoughts on what such a God should do. So does god intervene EVER in our lives? Or is he purely someone who sits by and watches? If you say he can't intervene when we need him to...in order to save lives of children...then he also doesn't intervene in times of good either, correct? So when my friends on Facebook post "My son survived the car wreck, thank god!" or "My mom's surgery went well and she's recovering. Thank you for all the prayers, we're putting our trust in the Lord to heal her." Is god the one we should be thanking...or is it just the way life is? There doesn't seem to be a consistency when I hear Christians say "don't blame god for the bad...just for the good." Of course, in the Bible god seemed to always intervene in human affairs.
  3. Kind of convenient don't you think!!!? Becareful if you go down the route saying the moon landing is fake. Buzz Aldrin will knock the crap out of you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wcrkxOgzhU
  4. Nah, you've got a true brewing kit. If you have to boil the water...that's not a Mr. Beer kit. It'll taste better Rehydrating the yeast is recommended for dry yeast...like said above. However, I just recommend smack packs like these: So much easier to deal with and I've never had any problems with fermentation. Don't need to be uniform height. Not sure what instructions you have for bottling...but be sure to mix the sugar/water ratio correctly. I take 3/4 cup regular cane sugar and mix it with 2 cups water in a pan on the stove. Boil for 15 minutes or until well dissolved. Let it cool then throw into your bottling bucket BEFORE siphoning your fermented beer onto it. This will help insure everything is properly mixed and that you minimize bottle bombs. Eventually you'll want to get a bottling bucket like these: http://www.midwestsu...ith-spigot.html What's nice about those is the spigot you can turn on and off. Then you can take a bottle filler, attach it to the bucket, and fill bottles easily! Anyway, don't want to confuse you too much. But once I started brewing I realized there's so much more involved than I had ever knew. Good luck!
  5. good points by tschu. At least all of this is assuming you got a real kit and not one of the Mr. Beer cold brew kits. There's a big difference. If you don't make it through the entire thread that he linked to...make sure you look over this: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/easy-partial-mash-brewing-pics-75231/ Especially if you're brewing extract only (which is good when you're just starting out). But eventually you'll want to branch out and that link will help you try a bunch of new techniques without having to buy a crap load of equipment. A couple other tips: If you're using dry yeast (I recommend Wyeast)...make sure the wort is cooled first. Don't throw the yeast in hot wort, otherwise it will kill it. I learned that hard the first brew I made. If you don't have one, get an auto-siphon. They're so much easier! Once you go partial grain...don't mess with your grain too much. Just let it steep. Don't use glass carboys. Heavy liquids and glass don't go well, and if you drop/break them...you could hurt yourself. I prefer a bench capper. I had a handheld that broke on the first bottle I tried to cap with it. My bench capper has worked flawless. To clean bottles, I like to soak everything in a solution of warm water and Oxyclean after I empty them. THEN sanitizer before filling them. Get a good bottle brush. Unlike tschu, I do use tap water. Generally, if you don't mind the taste of your tap water, you'll be fine. Oh yeah...and be ready to gain weight. Although I haven't brewed in awhile, I used to always have 40-50 bottles on a shelf at a time with another fermenting in the basement
  6. I know this "I Am Adam Lanza's Mother" article is the hit of all of Facebook. But I kind of disagree with it. At least based on what I've read about Adam. I do agree that the mental health issue needs addressing as much as the gun control issue does. But did Adam really have a mental health problem that could have been addressed beforehand and result in prevention of this act? It's been declared that Adam had at least aspergers syndrome...some media outlets alluded that this could be the reason for his actions. But at the same time many parents and physicians (including an FBI behavior analyst) have come forth saying that the media is wrong and that this syndrome does not result in such violent behavior. Even family members have been public saying that Adam was a reserved, quiet person who may have been a genius accelerating in his classes, etc...but never bullied or someone they would think would be this violent. The above mentioned FBI agent stated this was something that was calculated. He picked his guns, loaded them with plenty of ammunition, shot his mother in her sleep, destroyed his computer in such a manner that would make it impossible (or difficult) for anyone to trace his history, etc. I know the woman in the above article may have had problems with her son. But from the sound of it....Adam Lanza's mother didn't have the violent issues that she did. Nowhere have I seen Adam painted as a violent child who suffered from mental health issues. So is our communities response on mental health really a factor in this issue? I question whether Ms. Long's son would really result to such violence as what happened here in Connecticut. Acting out in temper tantrums is common with children who have autism. But they are typically against people who they are in direct contact with. Like family members. And these are in sporadic fits of rage. These children aren't known to just go off and carefully plan a calculative shooting against innocent children/people. http://www.cnn.com/2...file/index.html But maybe I'm missing some reporting?
  7. You say that until one day when you go to buy it and wonder why prices are absurdly high!
  8. I had a long reply typed up but realized most of it was pointless. This was what I had problem with the most. Our view of what is moral may be limited, inconsistent and imperfect. But what we hold over your god is that we are able to change and evolve. We learn from our failures. We improve and become more moral over the years. Your creator apparently does not. Is what is moral only moral because your god says so...or because it is moral in the first place? Could your god say rape or murder is okay tomorrow? Would you abide by that? Your god has to answer for his atrocities because if he wants my love and respect (something he instilled in me as a human condition that I value)...then he should respect that same value in me. And if you're saying my morality is only MY own STANDARD...something that he does not care for? Then I care not to worship him. You go to the parent analogy. So I ask if a parent rapes his child. Beats and tortures this child...and then tells that same child it's his own fault because he was born for that. And he shouldn't question his parent...instead love and accept that parent. Is that moral and just? I think if you asked a child after he's had time to learn and adjust to the world around him...after he has grown up to decide on what is moral and what isn't. And based on those perceived moralities how one would pick a parent? You would get answers that are surprisingly NOT a mess. That child would tell you exactly what they would need when growing up. And to PROVE this...just look at how those children eventually raise their OWN children. Children grow up. They then have children on their own. And the experiences they had throughout their own childhood and the rest of their lives shape the way they raise their own children. Personal experience will always win out over divine command.
  9. Nah, not trying to make any point. Just had the same question that Lil Red had earlier about making someone the ultimate person in your life.
  10. As said earlier, yes, it was satire. I saw this thread....and remembered I recently saw a comic that related. Thought it was funny. Combined the two
  11. If I recall correctly, you are Catholic? Are you taking Paul's position on marriage then? "To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain single as I do. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion." (1 Corinthians 7:8-9) "Now concerning the matters about which you wrote. It is well for a man not to touch a woman. But because of the temptation to immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not rule over his own body, but the wife does. Do not refuse one another except perhaps by agreement for a season, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, lest Satan tempt you through lack of self-control. I say this by way of concession, not of command. wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own special gift from God, one of one kind and one of another." (1 Corinthians 7:1-7)
  12. Well, in the most recent quote you said it wasn't prudent to tell someone they were wrong. That's what I was responding to. except my first comment on your statement from the first page had to do with you saying: I purely meant how can those who say "god hates" not understand the true mind of god, when obviously you do? And if you agree that you don't understand the mind of god, how can you say those who say "god hates"...don't understand the mind of god?! I guess I just assumed we were taking your hypothetical position that you knew the mind of god. And likely, you knew I would disagree with you. I think that's the crux of my position. I may disagree with you on the belief of a god. And you the opposite. That's fine. But then you go one step further saying others don't know the mind of god but you've been taught the mind of god. So I have to question how you know the god that many know as unknowable....is somehow knowable when it comes to many important moral issues! No worries. Most likely we'll end nowhere too, but maybe someone on the fence might jump in and join us in the conversation
  13. Sorry if you think you were being mocked. I'm just having a discussion. I figured if your beliefs were important to you...you'd be able to hold a conversation about them. I felt like my response to your question was justified. People get so bent out of shape when it comes to someone else commenting about their religious beliefs. But when it's political or anything else....it's free game? Just because you have a belief in something doesn't mean I can't say that I think you're wrong about it.
  14. So that begs the question; If the person saying "God hates..." has a misunderstanding on the mind of god, how do the people who taught you that god doesn't hate anybody...know how the mind of god works? And that begs the question; why would someone who doesn't believe God exists be concerned what God does or doesn't think? That person is probably concerned because the worshipers of a god they think hates gay people...like to make laws that affect those same people.
  15. And if god loved his female humans who are biologically unable to have children...he would have given them the ability to have children. So god only cares about procreation? Of course you'd have to explain animals have sex for non-procreation reasons. btw, I acknowledge your note (and know the OP's trolling post Just adding fuel to the fire
  16. So that begs the question; If the person saying "God hates..." has a misunderstanding on the mind of god, how do the people who taught you that god doesn't hate anybody...know how the mind of god works?
  17. Bc kicking a 67 yard field goal in high school is amazing! Sure is but we aren't even looking at him. sorry if I broke protocol or something. Wasn't aware we were only supposed to post people who Nebraska coaches show interest in. Should I move this to the generic recruiting section?
  18. nah, no worries. I don't venture to this section much...mostly just lurk in the off season. But thought it was the right place to share the vid. and thanks Po
  19. not saying we NEED a kicker. Just saw the video of a good high school kicker. Remembered that Nebraska has had some good kickers. Thought I'd share. This seemed the appropriate place to post it. Really man, don't get your panties in a bunch.
  20. bennychico is someone who has been around here 2.5 years before irieboy8 joined Who the hell is irieboy8?
  21. Player: Austin Rehkow Hometown: Spokane, WA School: Central Valley Position: K Height: 6'3" Weight: 195 40 time: 4.8 Offers: Rivals: 247: Scout: ESPN: This article/video caught my eye: http://sports.yahoo....-143909130.html 67 yard kick, no wind. And easily clears it. No Division 1 offers And for a coach to even say "let's go for the field goal" in that situation...means he trusts that kicker's leg.
  22. I disagree with your definition of faith. As I'm sure the scientific community would have issue with your calling the origins of the universe something the human brain can't comprehend. Because if you're saying we are unable to comprehend it, then why say it's an intelligent form....or a god? More specifically, the Christian god. How are you able to comprehend that it is what you say it is? There are many scientists who DO have hypotheses on those specific questions. Many of them are working to find evidence to support their hypothesis and many probably already can point to their evidence that they believe supports it. We don't know everything and may never. This universe has been around too long. It's like trying to solve a murder trillions of years in the past. There's a LOT of work that needs to be done. You can find a lot of information over at http://talkorigins.org/ And eventually you have to explain where your god came from. What is what Junior was asking originally. The thing is I can see how someone would jump to the conclusion that it is a higher power. We're curious beings that need answers (and need them NOW, especially in this day of age). So a lot of people are not happy with "I don't know"...and decide to make up their own explanation. And a god seems to fit that bill. But it's an ever receding answer that's been used since the first questions about the world we live in. God explained EVERYTHING in our world. He caused the rain, the lightening, the famines, the floods, death, birth, etc. When science starting explaining things, god just got pushed back bit by bit. The great thing about science is that it's fine with "I don't know." Because "I don't know " means the answer is still out there and we have a chance of finding it! But it still makes people comfortable to use god to explain what they cannot. And not only a god, but you define a specific god. We live in a natural world governed by natural laws. And even though scientists can't explain everything, we DO know we can't settle on supernatural magic being the explanation for everything. Especially since there has never been evidential support for magic ever. And saying "i don't know, therefore, god"...is not a way to answer these questions that we are all interested in.
  23. Funny. I say the same thing about people who claim it's a higher power.
