  1. Beck who?? Beckham? We had a Beckham? Why wasn't he kicking off???
  2. Someone (drowning in a sea of red) brought up a good point in another thread that really got me thinking. He wondered 'what was up with the TE's this year' and it got me wondering too - to the point of looking at stats. According to the stats I found NU's 4 main TE's (Herian, Phillips, Mueller, Teafatiller) have combined for: 31 receptions, 309 Yards, 9 TD's. So I went and found TE stat leaders for the nation (CBS Sportsline) so far and if our TE's were one guy: 1) He'd be 2nd in the nation in TD's (One TE has 10 TD's on the season) 2) He'd be top 25 in the nation for rec. yards (top has nearly 700) 3) He'd be top 15 in total receptions (top has over 50) -The only thing that has changed is that we haven't had the big yardage plays stretching the field we're used to. Man I loved that option pass to the TE that Crouch ran so well. -All of the work is being divided among multiple guys instead of one main receiving threat and the rest just blocking as in the past. Hope that sheds a positive light on the TE situation that might be bothering some!!!!
  3. Way to be a newbie and speak your mind! Not that I'm a seasoned veteran (hey I think I just got my first 'letter') but I've already ruffled feathers....but its for the good of discussion. 1) At least there's still football on. Imagine if every team took a week off in the middle of the season...at the same time. Sorry...can't share the enthusiasm on HS football. 2) Can't do away with OU fans. Too much history. And believe it or not...all the comments of OU fans "thinking they deserve games/wins" or that they are "football royalty"...that's probably the same thing that they and the rest of the country say about NU. Both are winning traditions, both have multiple Nat. Champs, and both have a HARD TIME accepting anything less than perfection. I think a lot of NU fans find it easier to point the finger than look in the mirror. (Ruffling feathers....I know.) 3) Overall I think the TE's have done very well! Combine their receptions, yards and TD's and they are putting up good numbers. But it's like the RB situation, we'd have a Heisman candidate if you put the majority of numbers towards one guy and not split them 4 ways. Not many programs do that with RB's or TE's. Herian...he's not the same. Too bad on the injury because he would have been a good one. I don't think they are just 'going away' on him. I don't think he has it now. I doubt anyone in the NFL even takes a chance on him now. 4) I'm a huge college basketball fan. Unfortunately NU hoops (right now) doesn't qualify for that category! Amazing how bad Collier and the athletic department let it go until they did something about it. Shows how much attention football takes and how little attention anyone pays to anything else. 5) Tommie....great college QB....probably best ever. And then they just stopped building tracks for that train. Follow the footsteps of other former Huskers...sell insurance.
  4. Keller plays in '07. Lee comes in and gets in-game reps in '07. Can still have 2 years as a starter unless he is outperformed in '08/'09. As long as Witt doesn't go "Beck" on us and has patience, he'll still have 2 full years as a starter. Bad thing is that NCAA is such a 'play now league' now that this is a lot to ask. But we can always hope. Beau Davis/Joe Ganz...might want to see if there are any openings on other rosters. Sorry kids.
  5. Man...East is still weak like the North. I'm telling you...just pick'em. It might be the only time in history where the weak/uncoordinated 'kid' is picked first to get a couple guaranteed conference victories. First pick Nebraska: Yeah...we'll take Baylor. Baylor: Yesssss! Crap, we have to play them every year then? 2nd Texas: Dammit. I guess we'll take Iowa State. ISU: Sweet! Wait....not sweet. And so on...
  6. Glenwood here so I'm just 20 minutes from downtown Omaha and the casinos for big-game atmospheres. Raised as a Husker fan by my dad and grandpa. NU alum and loyal fan. However (as many on here already know) I'm a realistic (sometimes the 'devils advocate) Husker fan on here that reminds everyone to take off the "Scarlet and Cream Glasses" and "Big Red Blinders" every once in awhile!!!! Still - am and always will be in my husker shirt and hat on fall Saturdays.
  7. Yeah...Beau Davis is still lurking!!! If Keller comes in with all the hype and isn't the starter...won't that just be a

    #13 = #1?

Would somebody wheel their grandpa up to the computer so they can weigh in on the old-school/new-school QB's??? Also, don't forget about Mike Stuntz...he was responsible for one of the greatest passing plays in NU football history! I guess I'd say: 1) Tommie - Hard to argue that since most media has him as the top COLLEGE QB 2) Gill - He lead the 'scoring explosion' and gets points for the 'great guy' factor 3) Crouch - Simply the numbers. Heisman. Also, he was the first 'big thing' after the T.O. era. 4) Tagge - From what I've been told and the little I've seen, plus the Nat. Champs 5t) Taylor - IF HE FINISHES WITH THE STORYBOOK ENDING! 5t) Frost - He had some big shoes to fill. Yes he 'won' a Nat. Champ, but it was a split....and gotta remember 'the kick' that got us there. Also, he had some horses on O and D that made the transition a lot easier.
  9. My bad....I thought you meant if we FINISHED with 3 losses (Colorado, UT/OU, and bowl game)?!?! Is it too early for a beer???
  10. I think a restructure has to be done. The south teams get all of those Texas boys. Don't know how they'd do it though as all the the states pretty much stack one on top of the other. But does it really matter? After all....Louisiana Tech is in the WAC right? Maybe they can do it kinda picking teams in a pickup basketball game. Texas is the South captain, Nebraska the North and they take turns picking teams to be in their league.
  11. I doubt we'll be top 50 with 3 losses?!?! And end of year to preseason rankings...don't carry much weight with me. Examples: Michigan loses to us in Alamo bowl, preseason #15 (I think) and could contend for Nat. Championship. Iowa, while I'm a fan, was top 10 preseason. Now...not so much. And Rutgers was probably what out of the top 50 to begin the year? To me, its just what games you win/lose.
  12. Don't really care about the actual # ranking at the end of the year. It won't be #1 or eve top 5 so it really doesn't matter. Just as long as we play in January (other than the GMAC bowl or something) in a major bowl that's huge for this team. Big national coverage - hopefully with a good performance/win will give the most momentum and get recruits interested. I personally wouldn't mind the Cotton Bowl and trying to impress/get some of those Texas kids up here!!!

    #13 = #1?

I think he's been mentioned on almost every post?!?! Let me check (pause) - Yep...all but 1 has his name. And yes, I didn't put Taggge's name down. Not intentionally, just was rattling off names that popped into my head....but wasn't going to list every QB that ever started a game. Matt Turman? Mickey Joseph?

    #13 = #1?

I'd have to argue that NOBODY has had to carry such a weight/burden. Example: Frost. He didn't have to change the offense, but he did have to come in and fill the shoes of a 2-time top 5 heisman finisher and 2 time Nat. Champ. Talk about carrying the weight and expectations of the world?!?! I think ZT will make a 3-5 year career as a backup to some young stud-gunslinger. You know, one of those guys that maybe sees the field for a combined 5 minutes in a season because the starting QB never misses a snap. You'll never hear his name, and you'll only see his jersey during a timeout. Maybe backup for a Carson Palmer or Philip Rivers. Kind of like the backup for Peyton Manning......um.....who is......see my point? (Is it still Jim Sorgi?) But I'm sure that a cool 350K a year would be nice to call in plays!!!! Anyway, back to the top QB discussion!!!!
  15. Yes...huge surprise to me to see that they gave up more in the 2nd than the 3rd. I guess I'm still expecting the Blackshirts to come out of the gate at the beginning of every half and dominate...not be average. Again...It just seems like opponents offenses get into a 'flow' in the 3rd quarter that disrupts the flow of the game for NU on both sides of the ball. That being said...I guess it is up to the offense to get their heads straight for the 3 upcoming 2nd halves. Oh, and if they want to keep up the strong 1st halves too to go along with it that would be nice!
  16. On 1620 yesterday they got into the discussion about Taylor and his 'legacy' (allbeit 2 years) at NU. Figuring in stats, toughness, heart and leadership. Plenty of people said he's a top 3 QB, but I think some are just caught up in the 'now' and not thinking of some from the past. Of course he's had to do something that few QB's have had to do...be THE GUY in a completely re-vamped offense. I am 30 so I've been around for some great teams and players...but I don't have much input about guys like Ferragamo, Humm, etc. Wish I could have seen some of those guys back then. I'd say he's (Taylor) top 10 now, but if they can win the next 3 he'd add to this 'legacy' and be top 5. Think for a bit: Humm, Ferragamo, Gill, Gadowski (yes I think he was underrated), Frazier, Frost, Crouch, Dailey....OK kidding. And would you put Berringer up there? Sitting back, took advantage of his chance, and moved back out of the spotlight when Tommie returned. What are your top 3-5-10..... Why? And no...Steve Taylor can't be #1 no matter what you say!!!
  17. Point taken Husker-Okie. I guess it just seems/feels like the defense gets picked apart coming out of the gate in the second half. Probably don't notice it as much in the 2nd quarter becuase generally the offense is piling up the numbers. As a fan, I have felt a huge drop-off/let down in the second half of nearly every game this year...can't help but think players and coaches feel that too. Just a 'flow of the game' thing I guess.
  18. I don't think we scored in the 3rd against USC did we? That means of the 42 3rd quarter points in 11 games, we scored 35 against the powerhouses of LaTech, Nicholls State and Troy. Yeeeesh. However, it is on both sides of the ball that the coaches need to look at the numbers. Anyone know how many points opponents have scored in the 3rd quarter? It would be really interesting to see how many 1st or 2nd posessions of the 3rd have resulted in scores. Halftime adjustments.........
  19. True, but OU, USC and UT have all had great passers and receivers put up huge numbers along with having a strong and productive running game. Like you said, balance is the key. 80%? Is he passing against our starting DB's in practice?!?! Completely agree that you can have good numbers air and ground. I was just referring to having a tandem that puts up INSANE numbers (4000+ yards passing)...those teams never have a strong rushing attack.
  20. It would be cool to have a Heisman/Pro-Style QB go off as Keller is hyped to do. It would be even cooler (sorry for lack of colorful words) to have him throwing to an NFL prototype receiver. However... 1) To put up huge passing numbers, you take away from what is an obviously strong running attack we have returning. Big numbers by QB's and WR's doesn't equate to wins and championships (ask T-Tech, Hawaii and New Mexico State) 2) Our offensive line has some SERIOUS work to do if our passing numbers and efficiency are going to grow any further than they are right now. But again, if they are solid, a balanced attack would be the best result in my opinion. 3) I'd just like to see the CAREER numbers Witt (or any of the younger QB's and WR's) would be able to put together if they are able to play for 3+ years and pile up the numbers. That would be awesome to watch over the upcoming seasons. With that being said, if Keller can throw for 3500 and 40 while Mo has 100 receptions for 1200 and 12.....I'll scream their names with everyone else!
  21. Thanks 55...I think...a little confused. You said that you agree that Prince is more deserving, but then you say: "But you really can't be a NE fan and suggest that someone else did a better job. Pretty closed minded." I think one is a closed-minded fan if they DON'T put others into consideration. Were you being sarcastic? Am I misreading what you meant? Anyway....good to see that others can commend the competition on a job well done.
  22. He's on the list to choose from, gave my opinion. "Freeman has had a good year, but only part of a year...and still makes freshman mistakes." Thanks for backing up what I said.
  23. Sure, I suppose if you're trying to get me going I'll chime in. Freeman has had a good year, but only part of a year...and still makes freshman mistakes. I actually logged on and voted for Zac. He's been the most consistent part of the team this year and aside from a slightly lower completion percentage and a few less rushing yards, he is putting up the same numbers as Heisman front-runner Troy Smith. He definitely gets my vote. Lane...hard to ignore 2nd in TD's, of course you can't just weigh (no pun intended) in on that factor. McCoy...has had a lot of help surrounding him making his freshman year a very successful one. I believe he has fewer yards but a better rating than ZT. Still, what ZT has had to do gives him the edge. Just think what the possibilties would have been had Callahan decided to focus on one back (B-Jax) or use Purify all season and be the go to guy for 12 games?!?! Ohhh.....wait.....I was supposed to dog on anything Husker wasn't I. Crap, must be the fan in me coming out. Or maybe its being able to look at things objectively. Who knows.
  24. Hey...whatever you want it to be. You know it is POSSIBLE to be a Husker alumni, Husker fan....and STILL realize that there are other programs out there. However if I need to go out and get a personalized license plate and a blazing Husker tattoo....I'll probably pass on that. I guess I like thinking that the conference as a whole needs to be recognized...as right now the Big XII is weaker than it has been in years and needs all the programs to step up and be a force.
  25. The conversation is actually about Prince or Callahan (or whoever) for coach of the year. I had made points for Prince over the year what he has done and then SOMEBODY turned it into the KSU/UT game breakdown. I, in turn, tried to show how Prince and his players worked to win that game and will be looking at an 8-4 SEASON. So no....this conversation is not about the KSU/UT game. Might want to go re-read the thread subject line, how my comments revolved around the KSU program as a whole and how Prince has done over the season...and then re-think your last comment.
