  1. I wasn't talking about you. jumptoconclusionsmat.jpg Those people in the stands and those of us you might run into on a message board, may just view things differently than you. Might have a different perspective on the game than you. Doesn't make them stupid, doesn't make you right. Sports would suck if everyone always agreed.
  2. Yeah, that's exactly what I've been saying swifty. Thanks, your intelligence has enlightened us all.
  3. I seriously have no idea what game you guys are watching. Other QBs might be better passers. That isn't what Martinez is, so don't judge him as such. He is a better playmaker than any QB we've faced, and a better playmaker than most we will face all season (exceptions maybe in Robinson and Wilson). His pocket passing isn't good. But his passing isn't the reason he's the starter. If he can continue to play like he has up until this year, against the defenses we will face, of course I'd be happy with his play. But I don't think he will. He needed to add a dimension to his game to beat the better defenses. We witnessed that last year.. Be it accuracy (not easy to improve) or, better judgement and pocket presence (where I am most disapointed that he hasn't improved). He needed to add something to take this team to the next level. I just don't think he has.
  4. How old are you? It's like you never watched - or understood what you were watching - when we were a run-first team in the 80s and 90s. Martinez' skill set is nearly identical to the QBs we had for two decades, when we won nine games a year every year, and threw in about half a dozen shots at the national championship. Won a couple of those too, if you recall. He's a college QB whose skills rest in his feet. This is not a new concept in college football. I think the average age of the posters here at Huskerboard is around 22. They just weren't around or were too young to remember the 80s & 90s and can't imagine winning without a lumbering pocket passer. They're butthurt to an extreme that Bo & Beck don't agree and really want Callahan's offense (or something similar). They have seen a few highlight reels though so they "know" Frost, Frazier, Crouch etc were great passers too! Read the first post in the thread again. I was here for the option days. And like I said in that post, if we want to run an option attack, great, Martinez would be our guy. But we are not an option team. Even if we do run it more and more these days. The old option attack took a committed approach to being an option team. It took recruiting option high school kids at receiver and tight ends. We're using the option only to enhance our QB's best assets 1/3 of the offensive plays. And great, I love to see it. But Crouch and Frazier would not be effective in THIS offense just like Martinez isn't. Well, "this" offense is only just started four games ago. We're running the option, behind center in the I, we're even using and running a fullback. Is that the same as TO's offense? No. Is it 10,000 times closer to TO's offense than what we've been running the last eight years? "Yes". Beck himself has stated several times we're a "run-first" offense. It looks more & more that it is exactly that. Frazier, Frost & Crouch would excel in this offense too. Primarily because, especially with Crouch & Tmart, opponent DCs have to sell out to stop our qb's runs. That comes at a cost and that's a big reason why our wrs are frequently so WIDE OPEN. You really think opponent DCs would compromise their defense to stop a conventional pocket passer's runs (say, like Z. Lee or Z. Taylor)? Nope. Not a chance. Sure, they were better passers, but their feet scared absolutely nobody. Lastly, TO says in his opinion "a yard gained rushing is worth more than a yard gained passing". Obviously you don't agree. I do. This offense is getting better every week and the sky is the limit. You can have your glass half empty. I'll take mine half full. GBR!! Well, shoot, someone should go and tell TO that Crouch and Frazier should have passed more back then. I mean, defensive coordinators were selling out to stop the run back then too. Maybe Osborne just didn't know he could get wide open receivers to throw to! All snark aside. If we can find a way to pound the ball with our rushing attack and *IF* Martinez can be effective against much more athletic and physical defenses without once again getting himself hobbled, or giving up the rock like a Pez dispenser, great! But, call me a skeptic. And I hope they have a backup plan. Because if Martinez gets a sore wheel like last year, or we run into a defense not impressed with his speed, I've seen nothing that would lead me to believe his passing ability is any more capable to beat a defense this year than it was last year.

  6. I do. And while I didn't like much of what I witnessed last year from Martinez. I made very few negative comments about him during the season. Mostly because I felt like he was working with nothing around him. No real running game, one of the worst receiving cores around, an offensive line that was beaten routinely and an offensive coordinator who put him in lose, lose situations all game long. Which is why I said I was cautiously optimistic going into this season. But I feel like he has the weapons around him and a much more competent play caller this year. Yet it looks like the same Martinez out there. I'm not asking for perfection. Just growth. I've seen very little from him in that area. I hope he proves me wrong next week.
  7. Why does every bit of criticism always get made into crying, whining, being drunk, or not being happy that we won? I just don't, and heaven't for awhile now, believed he is a legit FBS qb. I was excited to hear about all the supposed progress he had made since last year. Was willing to give him and the coaches the benefit of the doubt when THEY said we'd see a different Martinez this year. I'm just not seeing it. Some see him throwing a 50 yard bomb to Kyler Reed and enjoy the nice "big play" stat. I shake my head at the fact he underthrew a wide open receiver by 15 yards and had it been even a competent throw, Reed walks into the endzone. Good for Martinez he gets the big completion. But it was still a horrific pass.
  8. I just feel like I've seen this movie before. And I know how this ends. We all get giddy like school girls (myself included early last year) as he shows blazing speed and great moves to blow by inferior athletes. Then, when we play teams with great athletes on defense he can't run by, we have no other options. Martinez fumbles, gets frustrated in the pocket and takes big sacks, locks on to receivers and throws interceptions to linebackers and we lose. As you said, everyone loves a good dual threat qb. But other than a true option team, I've yet to see a successful single threat qb when that one threat is his feet.
  9. (oops, meant Prince) Would anyone not gladly swap Martinez with any of these three? Yeah, whatever, flame away. But he's continuing to look like the worst QB on the field vs just about every opposing QB we've faced. If they want to bring back the option and commit to it, fine (even then he better learn how to hang on to the ball when running). But we're not a true option team, and I highly doubt we'll be able to "toss sweep" our way over defenses that we can't push around. I just don't get how programs like Wyoming, Fresno st. and even the *hey, look at us, we finally broke .500 in 2010* Huskies can find these guys and we're still playing with a slot receiver at QB.
  10. "game of inches". Whatever. Nebraska piled up a lot of inches when it pounded the ball for 300+ yards right through your defense. If you want a few of those inches back, take them. But stop crying.
  11. Exactly. Wow, made the mistake of stopping by the seattle times articles and read the comments. Then figured there must be just a sore group of fans there so I went by the pac 12 blog on espn. Nope, it's apparently true that the vast majority of Huskie fans think they were hosed out of this game.. The common logic being "if we get that 7 from the blown muffed punt it's a 6 point game and anything can happen".. Um, you do realize Nebraska packed it in when up by 27 in the 4th quarter right? That we shut the offense down and just tried to burn the clock. That our defensive scheme (according to Pelini) changed in the 4th and we tried (and failed) to force the Huskies to burn time off the clock.. That's the only reason this game ended up as close as it did. Nebraska could have kept its foot on the pedal (and should have) and never looked back. The idea that the 4th quarter would have played out as it did had Nebraska not been up by such a large amount is comical. We had taken over the game by that point.
  12. Seems like we really play to the level of our competition, or probably better said play "flat" at home more than on the road. I know Bo addressed this problem last year and didn't he even put them on a bus and drive them out of town then back into town to simulate a road game at one point? I really hope they get it fixed soon. Be it South Dakota State, Fresno st. or potentially Ohio st... I really have gotten sick of watching opponents come into our house and make themselves right at home.
  13. These type of responses and the "whinny" accusations are silly. As if there is no middle ground, where a reasonable fan could have serious concerns about the offense and how much it will cost us this season. That we might not have a qb that will perform at the level we need to be a top tier team. Nope, to say so would be "freaking out" or 'whinny".. Please. I remember getting told that last year too. And the year before that. I wasn't talking to you. He was prob. talking to me. Which is why some really smart guy invented the quote feature for message boards.

  15. I haven't read any other threads, watched any post game coverage or read any articles (had to go straight to work after the game). So perhaps everything I'm about to say is completely redundant and been said a million times since the game. BUT, why is there pessimism? Because there was nothing, other than some new formations that I witnessed yesterday that looks any different than anything I've seen the last two seasons. 1. No push from the offensive line 2. QB locking onto a receiver and telegraphing every throw 3. Receivers dropping balls 4. Offensive players looking confused 5. Had it not been for the speed of T tragic to outrun inferior athletes, the offense showed no other ability to be productive. What's not to be pessimistic about? That it was only the first game is a fair point. And obviously there is plenty left to be determined. But, I witnessed nothing on Saturday to make me think that it's not business as usual. We hear that during practices T tragic is looking amazing, the offense is really looking sharp, yet none of it translates to gameday. And sorry, but after the last two seasons of watching some of the best defenses and best defensive players this school has ever seen get wasted by a putrid offense, I reserve the right to be pessimistic until proven otherwise.
  16. Thanks! I had no idea that was an actual store. I've tried just about every store that sells husker gear in the last 48 hours and found nothing. It must be an exclusive item to that store. Will head down and pick it up first thing Monday. Thanks again.
  17. Jacket. Looking for a store that carries it in Lincoln. Anyone have any ideas? I need XXL. I've seen dozens similar but can't seem to find this exact one. Will order it on line if no one has any ideas, but wanted it in time for a birthday present and as usually the case, I've waited until the last second to shop for him. Thanks.
  18. Ever notice how much quicker a player-team can look when they are reacting and not thinking? They've got a new defensive coordinator and are doing some new things on defense. Once they get a few games under their belt they will gain speed on defense.
  19. I'll never forget missing the first 5 minutes of the beat down we gave Arizona. That game between Idaho st. and some other who gives a crap school almost had me throwing stuff at my tv.. It just wouldn't end.
  20. That's exactly what I'm talking about. In case anyone forgot, I've never seen such a classless display by an opposing team. I know, I know.. You don't like it, don't let them beat the snot out of you.. But they were over the line with their taunting, rubbing it in and excessive celebration.. It reminded me alot of the alabama - Utah game years ago where Bama lost their chance to play for a National Championship game, came to their bowl game against someone they didn't want to play, a place they didn't want to be and got blown out.. And much like that game, Utah coaches and players pretended like they were playing for the national championship and whooping it up without even a single instance of "lets be honest here, our opponent isn't mentally in this game".. Eh, whatever, maybe I'm just whining.. but I want the record set straight in a few weeks and my pund of huskie flesh.
  21. ..season. I've got butterflies and am amp'd up about getting payback on Washington. Not sure about you, but that pathetic display left a nasty taste in my mouth I have had to deal with ever since. I want some Huskie Ass laid out on Memorial Stadium turf.. I can't even get into the B1G season hype, the Wisconsin game, Ohio st and all the rest yet. I Washington. I want them beat thoroughly. A few weeks ago I pulled that game up on the DVR and watched most of it. Man, it riled me up.
  22. You don't have to be simple to have an identity. Some of the most complex offensives in the game understand what their primary objective is. Wether it be to set up the run and then use play action pass ala bama, to zone reads such as oregeon, to an air assault like texas tech or Indy. We lacked the one defining thing we were going to do and that would allow us to be complex and gameplan our opponents differently with the rest of the play calling.
  23. nice. That actually sums it up. Waiting for the big homerun and lost if it didn't come.. And it was amazing how you seemed to know almost immediately if it was going to be a good offensive day or a bad one. They either understood the game plan and were unstoppable or didn't an were inept. Vs. any opponent. Good defense or bad defense. If they simply didn't understand, they were finished.
