It's not much different than a college baseball coach overusing his star pitcher to the point where it becomes detrimental to the kid's long term career. Sure, the pitcher doesn't want to be taken out of the game, but if he burns out his arm that is a huge disservice to the kid. (All IMHO, of course.)
A college coach should be concerned about the players' best interests, as well as his own. Burning a redshirt for a few plays early in the season, especially in blowout games, is not typically in a kid's best interest. If Niles Paul is relegated to a few special teams plays the rest of the year, then his redshirt was wasted.
