  1. Can you imagine if Sam was having a Heisman-Caliber season and NU was, more like, 7-2? This would be devastating. When was the last time that a Nebraska QB was put out for the season with an injury? I remember, in 2001, I always thought Crouch was going to get injured...with his constant out-of-the-pocket scrambles. I was sure he would be hurt...never was, fortunately. Per Huskernumerouno -- And can you imagine, if we won out, the bag of cats that would open concerning our coaching staff?
  2. I just put all the coaches that have been talked about the last few weeks in there & I've heard Grobe's name mentioned a couple time. I guess I should have rephrased my statement. I've seen Grobe's name pop-up on numerous posts prior to this one....that's what I intended to convey.
  3. I voted for Pelini...for my own reasons, but based on the fact that our OC will implement an offense "appropriate for Nebraska Football." That's one of the things for me, BP has proven that he can coach a defense to excellence; while TG has Nebraska history, tradition and the turnaround of Buffalo Football. If TG was hired as HC...whom would/could he hire to again make our defense excellent? I'm on the ropes fellas. And, I know, I shouldn't limit myself to those two guys -- "with all the possible coaches out there." In my opinion, I just see these two as the most likely candidates. P.S. How does Jim Grobe even make our list of potential candidates? His record at WF is 37-35, even Bill Callahan has him beat...and he's been there for six years?
  4. I want to preface this by saying that I still really want Bo Pelini back at Nebraska. It's just a dirty shame he wouldn't come back as a DC. Thus, I want him back as Head Coach, running the defense, and utilizing an offensive coach/coordinator. I simply like Pelini's fire and proven history of his defenses' performances. I believe that Pelini deserves a head coaching position at a good football school. And, I think it will happen after this season. I know it would never happen, but could you imagine Turner Gill as HC and Pelini as DC...or Bo Pelini as HC and Turner Gill as offensive coordinator? It'd be sweet. Nevertheless, here's an article about TG's role in the turnaround at Buffalo. This is just more ammo for you Turner Gill-ians. http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/college/...ory/194016.html
  5. This thread is still going? *Please see my avatar.
  6. Didn't you see my picture of the Cessna at Duncan Aviation?
  7. I believe you were looking for mediocrity. Oh and Pederson left so I think we can stop using that lovely term now . He didn't leave, he was fired.
  8. Frank was slipping to mediocrity. Bill has slipped to hilarity. He has completely lost it. Man, I hate to say it...but was 2003's season really mediocre? If you remember, after the 2002 season, it was alleged that Stevie Pedey gave Frank Solich an ultimatum. This ultimatum was "make SIGNIFICANT changes, or else." We brought in Pelini. We made significant strides...especially defensively. I don't know if the option offense would've continued to be the NU offense/solution. All I can say is this: going from 7-7 (2002) to 10-3 (2003) is a SIGNIFICANT improvement to me. Frank Solich should have been allowed, at least, one more year. Our program slipped into "mediocrity" for ONE year (2002). I hate hearing that argument. Since Solich, we've been mediocre 3 out of 4 years under Callahan. Perhaps too many people are using Pederson's definition of mediocrity? I hate to quote Mark May but this is ridiculous -- "I hardly see 9-3 as mediocre." Here's Ivan Maisel's take on it: When the decision is made to change coaches, usually the reason behind it is painfully obvious (John Mackovic) or blatantly wrongheaded (Tommy Tuberville). But neither describes the decision by Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson on Saturday night to fire Frank Solich. After going 7-7 in 2002, Solich came under pressure to revamp his staff and he did so. The Huskers finished the regular season 9-3, a significant improvement. If my math is right, that's much better than 7-7. Pederson disagreed, and in a short meeting Saturday night, told Solich that after 25 seasons on the Nebraska staff, he was done. Pederson may believe that the Huskers' inability to compete with Texas (31-7) and Kansas State (38-9) in the second half of the season indicate a drop in talent that Solich oversaw and can't rectify. But the athletic director's cure may be worse than the illness. If Pederson decides to hire a Walt Harris from Pittsburgh, for instance, he will be asking a passing coach to take over an offense built for the run. If you want to see what can happen in that circumstance, go watch a couple of Notre Dame game tapes. By firing Solich, Pederson must hope that he will accelerate Nebraska's ability to return to the place it held among the college football elite for more than three decades. But change doesn't promise improvement. It just promises change. -- Ivan Maisel, ESPN.com
  9. I agree with the "not playing dirty" aspect. However, I also believe that we're not losing the right way this season...except the Texas loss. That was admirable. The one thing that I hate is that people tend to use the football cliches when discussing this subject; see: New England Patriots 2007 scandal, recruiting violations, "gifts" to players...I do not advocate these. I'm not advocating breaking the rules. All I am saying is this: If Nebraska's head coach breaks the semantic rules, i.e. what one person believes to be inappropriate (may not be inappropriate to another)...I don't care. Until our coach is breaking the actual rules...I don't care. I actually respected Callahan's OU comments. Believe it or not. I love seeing our coaches stand up for our players. Regarding the "throat-slashing gesture", I can decipher between what is an actual threat or intended act and a gesture resulting from frustration, anger, testosterone, and adrenaline. I doubt that many people in Nebraska...actually believe that Callahan wanted to cut the referee's throat. Pardon my sarcasm...but they're all grown men. I hate to bust out the "are we getting too P.C." reference...but seriously, aren't we? Just win, we'll cross the other bridges when we get there.
  10. You are the winner...obviously not my best work...I'll try harder next time. P.S. I remember your first few posts...I like that you succumbed to the Disco Stu avatar. Nice work.
  11. You missed one. There's eight. Lately I've been very bored. Bo is everywhere.
  12. Yeah, whether or not we're the best fans - I agree there. Lots of schools have good fans. That's not what's most important. What's most important is whether our coaching staff is full of standout, high-character guys. Winning is one thing; character is equally, if not more important. That's all I'm saying. Win, but win the right way. This is the very message Osborne has said. Yeah, maybe he's grown more mature - but maybe he hasn't. That incident just gives me pause. I was more comfortable with the idea of him becoming head coach before I learned about it. An honest question: Do you really care about the character of the coach more than success (winning)? I'm not suggesting implementing a massive steroid campaign, or anything of the like. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but perhaps that is one of our main problems. Where do you find these high-character, experienced Division I level football coaches? Give Nebraska wins...the rest of the pieces will fall into place. Not because of our high-character coaches, but because of our character as Nebraskans.
  13. It's NOT the issue of cussing, and note that I wasn't defending Callahan wholesale. It's the issue of not having the most basic respect or common decency for the opposing coach. IMO, you got to play and coach with class and respect. Going up to the other coach after a game and cussing him out is just out of line, in my opinion. There's a difference between cussing out of emotion and actually saying that to the other guy. I agree, but I believe that the whole Head Coach title makes one re-evaluate their position on the "F-U" statements. I just want a head coach that can get us the results -- what other coaches think of the NU coach be damned. To be frank -- I visit non-NU boards, and they consistently criticize our "self-appointed 'best fans in college football'" mantra. It's starting to annoy the p-ss out of me. Solely because I believe they're right. I certainly do not condone the alleged verbal assaults on our players. That is downright ridiculous, regardless of team affiliation. I think we should focus less on whether we're the best fans in college football (I believe we always will be)...and more on whether we're the best college football team we can be. Let the rest of the chips fall where they may.
  14. Convince me that calling opposing team's fans "F**KIN Hillbiliies* is close to the Nebraska way. Convince me that a "throat slash" gesture is the Nebraska way. What separates TO from Switzer is nothing other than Switzer got caught cheating. I guess everyone just conveniently forgets that he's the one that got OU put on probation and NCAA santions. TO was clean while Switzer was busy paying players. This is what separates them! I like the cut of your jib.
  15. Personally, and remember...this is just me talking here -- I couldn't care less if our coach tells another rival coach to "FU@K himself." I like the fire...that's what football, I believe, is all about. I think that is exactly what Nebraska football needs. Not necessarily the "f-yourself" front...but that general attitude. We don't need to say it, more so, we need to present it on the field. I sincerely doubt that Pelini, as a head coach for Nebraska -- or anywhere for that matter -- would ever tell another coach to, well, you know. I love his intensity. *Quick edit -- Again, this is just my opinion, but I would rather be 11-1/12-0 rather than be 4-8, 7-7, 8-4 and be losing the right way.
  16. Frankly, I'm growing tired of the anti-Pelinians. He's proven, season after season (regardless of where he is coaching) that he has the tools and know-how to make a defense top-tier. That's really all that matters to me, at this point. With a few tweaks of our offense...imagine what could happen. Low opponent scoring and, well...we'll see with the offense. Cosgrove is gone. Period. I believe Cally is gone, at season's end. If we don't seize this opportunity to get Pelini back at the end of this season, I believe we'll regret it for the rest of our Nebraska football fan lives. Pelini will get a head coaching job, it's just up to Nebraska to determine whether it will be here. Rather than hire AU's Stoops, who may be getting fired for poor performance; or Joe Glenn (Wyoming) -- I say, why not give a guy that has a proven record of performance and potential a shot -- Pelini. Bo Pelini hasn't even been afforded the opportunity to "prove" himself as a head coach. I say, give a young guy a shot. Jim Grobe? Turner Gill (just not right, for right now)? You've got to be kidding me. Give me a legitimate name, and I'll shut my pie-hole.
  17. Yowza, again. Zac Taylor will always go down, and be remembered by me, as one of the BEST quarterbacks in Nebraska football history. I always loved the guy, from his demeanor to his performance. It's a shame we couldn't have him back for another year (or two). Made me proud to be a Cornhusker. As a visiting fan, people would constantly talk trash (as expected) about NU, yet they would never have a negative thing to say about Taylor...and I loved it. But now is now. As Zac states, "if we could have a freshman quarterback in here, the offense would REALLY take off." If there's one thing we have seen...BC has decided this will not happen. And, I really hope that it doesn't take a quarterback 3 years for an offense to officially set-in. I admire Zac's courage in this email. All I can say is this: the Nebraska Cornhuskers are likely to be 4-8 at season's end. Depending on semantics and whom you ask...this may be the WORST season in Nebraska football history. If someone even brings up parity, I'll club this baby seal. There is a problem. And, I know, this is not because a quarterback hasn't been afforded the opportunity to learn the offense. If so, then kill Nebraska football under Bill Callahan. Our Quarterbacks are not the problem. Our QBs can not account for the massive yards yielded by our defense. This has nothing to do with our quarterbacks learning the offense. Perhaps Cally should "dumb-it-down" a bit, then? Perhaps lose the 50-lb playbook? Personally, I'm at a crossroads. I've always liked Callahan, regardless of our performance. The things that he has done (fun run, etc.) made me proud. However, the back of my mind screams "Please fire Cally" while the other says..."is HE really to blame?" I need counseling.
  18. That's not a reply. I'm seriously sitting here in Lincoln, Nebraska scratching my damn head. Nebraska looked respectable today. If I were to take all the previous losses and embarrassments out of my mind...I would take today's loss to Texas in stride. I was proud of our team today...and I haven't felt that way since, well, 2006 and our win over Texas A & M. That's all I'm saying.
  19. Just a few questions...I'm extremely confused. With Watson essentially taking over Callahan's duties (in play-calling)...where does that leave Cally? We pretty much know that his position isn't that of a motivator. What exactly are his duties, now? Today, did Watson pretty much show that he could fill Callahan's shoes? Something was significantly different today. I don't know what it was...but I was fired up for the FIRST TIME this season...especially after the Asante blast to McCoy. I'm somewhat lost to what I think. And, I hate to say that next week will answer our questions. Have the questions changed? Actually, today kind of pissed me off. What the hell are we to think of our team? I witnessed a Nebraska team, today, that could hang with most top 25 teams. Somehow, Cosgrove managed to earn some respect from me...never thought that would happen. We ran more blitzes today than we have all season combined. And the schemes pretty much worked. I guess my question is this: where does today's game leave us as fans? How should we feel about our coaching situation? What are we to think? Essentially, and I hate to say this, I was more comfortable with us being blown out. At least those losses allowed me to KNOW that a change was coming. I hope this thread made some sense concerning my confusion. *As a side note, I believe that many of our defensive players have earned their blackshirts back.
  20. I agree. I was being significantly hypothetical.
  21. Capital S-C-R-E-W-E-D You know, if he made changes -- significant changes; I'd have to give it some consideration. After all, if it was obvious that the changes made directly affected the outcome, in a positive way, why not think it through? Personally, positive changes would have to include us winning our next 4 games. I still think Coz needs to go, regardless I really don't see any possible way for Callahan to turn it around, though. I really want Pelini here -- but I don't know if Osborne would fire BC if it looked as if the corrections have been made -- i.e. us winning the rest of our games. The one thing I'm afraid of, though, is that if we don't hire Pelini after this season...the Pelini ship will have set sail forever.
