  1. WAT!!! There is just about no way Ohio State loses to Colorado. That is a dispirited team in the midst of coaching change, dire financial woe and bare cupboards talent-wise. The Buckeyes are out to win every game for Tressel this year. They will not be surprised by Colorado, especially not in The Shoe.
  2. I read that. Short story is, they have us going 6-2 and beating Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championship. I think most publications are going to put us in the Rose Bowl this year based on our defense alone.
  3. Is that Niles Paul at :23? Looks a bit like him, but the video is too small to be sure. EDIT - it's not Niles. You can see better about the one minute mark.
  4. Here's a writeup from YardBarker about the NCAA's denial of Alabama's appeal, which helps further explain why we may not face the same kind of penalty: The bold and bold/underlined may be why we face little if any further penalties from the NCAA over this. 'Bama was nailed for ten major violations in 2002, mostly because their boosters were giving their athletes cash. Since we haven't had anything like that kind of penalty lately, I think we'll be OK.
  5. By way of comparison, Alabama had a similar - but not the same - situation in 2007. The total value of the textbooks they received was around $40k, there were 201 athletes involved, and Alabama was forced to vacate a total of 21 wins from 2005-2007. The key difference here is probably that 22 of those athletes knew that they were getting improper benefits, while our athletes say they did not know they weren't supposed to be getting these books. Also in Alabama's case, some of their athletes were getting books for boyfriends/girlfriends, and we were not. Again, allegedly. Here's the NCAA's ruling on the 'Bama scandal: Alabama also self-reported their violations. They were not required to lose any scholarships, nor did they incur a post-season ban.
  6. Sorry. No bars. Only "historical significance." I'd have to say that puts a pretty big damper on the responses you're going to get. The only really truly historic thing in Lincoln is the State Capitol Building. It's a stone fortress built in the 1920s that has the distinction of being the only state capitol that was entirely paid for upon completion. We were a frugal people back in the day. Other than that......... We call it the Prairie Penis. You could mention that. I've always called it "The Great White Penis of the Plains." Kinda rolls off the tongue. that's what she said
  7. They were losing money if they did that. Typically the books lose about 75% of their value when they walk out the door. There's huge money in textbooks. All you have to do is make minor changes to the same text and you can sell it again next year as the "new" textbook, and last year's basically has zero value. EDIT - I did it twice in one thread! I misread what you were saying there. I thought you meant he bought the books. My bad. The devaluation of the books is still true, though. Just not pertinent.
  8. I tend to agree with this rule, though. The gist of it is, if the regular students aren't getting this, the athletes can't get it, either. Like Dr. Tom said, NO athlete is choosing Nebraska because our bookstore gave out free "recommended" textbooks to the athletes. But even still, you can't let something like that go. What I want to know is, what is the nature of our "probation?" Does this carry any kind of penalty, or is this just for show?
  9. Greek Row at nearly any other university - and especially in the Big Ten - is going to blow ours away. The closest thing we even have to a Greek Row is 16th from Vine to R, or maybe R from 14th to 17th. Neither is all that great. Anyone who's attended a Big Ten university has seen better. (nothing personal to our Greeks) Nebraska as a state has some historical things of significance, but the city of Lincoln doesn't have much I can think of. That's pat's quote, not mine, BTW.

  11. I did not note that. That's how dumb I am. I totally forgot that they were already getting the required books for free. In my defense I'm very tired. Loooong weekend. But that's pretty boneheaded on my part to have missed that.
  12. Nebraska is far more liberal than you might think. The 2008 vote was split 60/40 in favor of McCain. Nebraska is one of very few states who split their electoral votes, and Obama actually won one of Nebraska's three Electoral College votes. Obama won in the two largest population centers in Nebraska, Omaha and Lincoln.
  13. Yeah, it looks like it was simply an honest mistake, and one that stems from the totally understandable NCAA rules on student athletes!!! I don't know. It seems like this was something the Bookstore was doing because they were athletes. That is definitely obviously not OK. If we find out everyone in these classes was 'given' these books that would be different. But I don't think we're going to find that out.
  14. At a time when the NCAA is looking to hammer people, any violation is a bad thing. Still, I'd rather it be about textbooks than tattoos.
  15. Lahvosh is ridiculously easy to make. We get it most every time we go to Lazlo's but I've only recently started making it at home. They sell the crackers in a three-pack at Hy-Vee, and then it's just whatever toppings you want and Havarti cheese. I'm disappointed that you buy your crust, dude. I expected more from you! I made mine from scratch the last time. I still need to work on getting it as crispy all the way across though. I cook enough as it is. I don't have any interest in making lahvosh crackers.
  16. Culture is the biggest thing. I think we had common culture with everyone from Oklahoma north, but once the Texas schools showed up, the culture changed dramatically, and we no longer fit. Colorado never really fit, either - they're far more a West Coast school than a Midwest school. They'll prosper in the Pac-12. We'll prosper in the Big Ten, if for no other reason than the fact that we're so very much like Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Sparty, Ohio State, etc. We're unlike PSU and Northwestern, but not so tribly much so that we can't find common ground. It seemed like, no matter what happened, we just could not get on the same page as Texas, Texas Tech or Baylor. A&M was somewhat like us, but not tremendously so, either. Not sure the Big 10 will be different in football then the Big X!! was, but basketball will only bring your program up a step or two, as well as "most" other sports programs with the exception of baseball. NU will bring Big Ten baseball up a notch or 3! In Academics, you will rise very high, as now NU will receive BILLIONS in CCC reasearch money, being a member of the BIG *hate that logo). In football you will finf natural "Big Time" rivals in U of M , Penn ST, tOSU and Iowa. You will find warm rivals in MSU, Wisky, and maybe Illinois. You will worry about having an off day against Northwestern, Minny, and Purdue. You will never worry about Indiana till Basketball. To start a rival in the Big 10, you have done that already, No one in the Old Big 10 wants a new member to winn the conference. Best of Luck Nebraska Red! I'm not talking athletically, I'm talking culturally, like the mindset of the folks. Midwestern rather than Southern. That's a very big difference in where a person is coming from.
  17. It sucks, too, because I've never seen that game in its entirety except the night it aired live. I should buy the DVD, but I'm cheap.
  18. Not on BTN. I would have recorded it.
  19. Anyone ever go to Spikes for their burgers? Fantastic burgers, man. They may be my new favorite place besides my own grill.

  21. Welcome to the board, macspartan! You'll get no argument from us about that "borrowed" 1997 championship Michigan has.
