  1. agree. perhaps they will alternate or go for 50 50 or some number based on needs per the situation, injury, graduation, talent....the whole class red shirt thing is history in my view....just dont see it as practical for a program installing a new system....years out you might fill the cupboard to enable changes you want to make in your own system...like last years class did for this current team.
  2. Me thinks that the coaches are developing thier HS network under the idea that if they focus on top drawer teams who consistantly win, those teams have many great players that are not all necessarily ranked the same. Program wining tradition schools have good coaching and players, by mide season senior year, there is a real opportunity to zero in and start going after the sleepers, Big schools like TX fill up early, that is both a luxury and a curse....kids make fairly substantial progress between Jr and SR year, cant really judge who made the MOST progress relative to peer group until the SR season gets underway. If we be winning, wouldnt worry too much about getting players....players want to play for top programs mid season and late season committs are good in the sorting of wheat and chaffe.
  3. Quote from Journal Star says; But perhaps the most interesting name mentioned was that of defensive tackle Thaddeus Randle — a 6-foot-1, 260-pound native of Galena Park, Texas. Pelini said Randle has impressed with his pass-rushing ability. “Those guys all potentially (could play),” Pelini said. “No decision’s been made to play them or not, and probably won’t be made until game time, when we see how the game’s flowing for us.” As for Randle, Pelini said: “He’s got a knack for it. He’s got fast feet. He’s got great speed off the ball. And those are what you look for. The other things you can teach — the hand fighting, the stuff like that. http://huskerextra.com/articles/2009/09/03...7267f3951624350 all camp not a word, and now Carl Pelini reveals that twist.... this staff is looking to optimize the system they intend to play. Redshirt or not, has gone out the window as they make player selections on the basis of what can a particular kid bring to our system... Pelinis want speed on the field....this is another way of getting it. Randle was viewed as a guy with great upside but almost a certain RS based on the lines current depth....and now this... These guys are looking to win and are pulling out all the stops. Doc Sadler too said red shirting is less mainstream for his program. The change is; win now, recruit well every year, and classes will shake out to the benefit of the system they intend to play.
  4. Following Husker BB this offseason has been fun, bit of a roller coaster but right now....as it all comes together, Docs presser yesterday should have made everyone very happy. The Great news yesterday, Doc gets C Standhardinger in January, gets an extra scholarship to cover Coleman. This BB team will be NU's best in a really long time. The talent level has gone way up. CS is supposed to be very very good player. Should make for an excellent season and give the Red a shot at some post season action. Scoring will go way up from this bunch, inside paint points will be so much better than the last several years. Outside scoring also willl be far better CS and Holley can both shoot. Doc is saying Redshirts will be less and less a tool...which he believes is a function of impatience of players. Injury took Bear last season, and Nieman this season. Nieman will get back next fall. Bear is ready now. cant help but get a bit excited about this team..... last years games were fairly exciting Doc showed his mettle by going all D all the time, remembering the Texas game W in particular...those kids just flat out were in opponents heads the whole game. Getting it done without Diaz was great for Diaz and the program....now this new batch has all kinds of talent, it will be very interesting to see how he maxes thier potential, the rotations we will have will create problems and present opportunities we never had last year. some of you guys that get to see the practices should chime in, tell those of us far removed what your seeing.... give us some perspectives on the rotations and the kind of tempo that can be arranged by this depth chart.

  6. yes understand all that, but that isnt this year...my comments are positioned for the coming year....will suh crick combo make it and if they do the implications are....top 10 defense. defense wins games....SUH is being heralded as the Best of the beasts....lets see if he alone or with crick, can make that list.. Here is the total Defense leaders from 08, the thing that is noticable is TCU and the # of plays they had to defend because there D shut a lot of folks down...In my opinion this defense has that kind of opportunity, shrink the play count with superior line play. Attack is a function of strategy....lbers making all the plays is a different strategy, and it has not led to a shut down of spread offenses. Change the strategy....change the outcome. http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year...v=IA&dest=O BTW here is an historical link to all Huskers drafted....no stats but found it a good historical reminder. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/t...-1&round=-1
  7. your wrong...but common perception is, that it is not doable. here is the ncaa data on leaders in tackels behind the LOS... http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year...v=IA&dest=O notice how this list is mostly DL with a few LB's spread throughout, Cal and Kansas each have one LB which illustrate the schemes thier coaches used to produce those stats. here is NU's rank for total defense last year. Rank Name Games Plays Yds Avg TDs Ydspgm 55 Nebraska 13 803 4548 5.66 49 349.85 803 plays total that would equate to 320 total stops across the DL....which would put at least 1 player on or near the top 40 list. remember a defense has relatively speaking, as much field to attack.....as the offense, when tackels for loss becomes a focal point of play.
  8. Think about it this way... If SUh alone or Suh and Crick combined make this list as the sum of eachs efforts, the other goals outlined in the post will most likely come true. the % of all tackles in a given season is X.... control of the line of scrimmage accounts for some % of X....when the DL handles a larger % of the totl tackels its illustrating control over the LOS to a greater degree than otherwise. Pressure against the spread, has been missing in the b12, not withstanding schemes or design. We'll know that the spreads been cracked when a defense like this one, can make the list. Any other dlineman that does it will also be on a leading defense. The combined totals of the two interior tackels numbers would work as well, to provide the result sought. Suh represents the great opportunity he was close last year, under the best conditions Crick & the D ends, not allowing double teams of 1 guy because the other guy is guaranteed to get there.... with pressure....everything changes. It says the QB of the offense must be under pressure to a greater extent, than when the QB has time to get rid of the ball LB's and DB's to rack up the tackels. LB's will make more takeaways under these conditions because a hurried QB will make more Bad decisions, his recvrs will have less time to get to thier spots, shrinking the field for LB's. It also means the DL is making the run stops within a few yards + or - of the los. people....this potential works as a goal, and shifts odds across so many aspects of a given game. the wild card here is the referees and thier choice or not to allow holding. In the last several seasons the holding in college balll has been a real boon to the offense....seems like everyplay the refs are making the choices which influence the games outcomes.
  9. For Suh to be great, all he needs to do is crack the top 40 in NCAA Production. +90% of the top 40 tacklers in 08 were Linebackers....Suh and his line mates, if any of them can crack this list the teams defense rockets to the top of NCAA Defenses by rank. Most of us believe we have better LB'rs than the past several years....but we dont know it, we just feel it. If NU's DLine and its leader by proxy SUH can knock on the top 40 list of ttl tackels, then NU will be a dominant defense. Bo's schemes will no doubt advantage NU significantly. Turner Allen & Crick will also be key to shutting opposing offenses down. This line right now has the kind of potential to be a Great line.....the post script story line, about the 09 season. If the D line dominates, huskers will dominate opponents. We will have some idea about just how good we are after VT. Holding them under 14 offensive points, will be a huge indicator of the team meeting its potential. ( VT may have points from Spcl teams or defense) huskers should shut out at least 3 teams this year. Hold 4 teams to under 17 points. Pressure on opposing QB's has not been a B12 hall mark over the last half decade, this line has the potential to be the first line to turn the tide against the spread by asserting pressure on opposing QB's not as a random event, but as standard practice...play in and play out....pressure the QB.... Under those terms our NEW LB's & safetys will get the takeaways and probably contribute defensive points on a regular basis. keep your eyes on the charts for Natl totl tackles, if any NU lineman is in the top 40 by mid season, and remains unhurt along with his linemates....this team writes some history of its own.

  11. Play him Play Rex...build depth and competition at the skill positions. Coaches think he's number 2 he is ready. ALL QB's in this league get dinged up, without depth and experience you backslide. We need to get all the QB's real game experience...because none of them currently have it. Zach is going to do great, and in doing great he'll mentor the others, when they gety in they'll develop the depth against the unavoidable injury gobblin. We all agree depth is a weapon, inexperienced depth is a liability. We need to take our licks this season developing depth with experience. There is no substitute for it. Same with REX, his highlight video convinced me that he's ready now, same circumstances, if he was not good enough to crack the 3 deep he should red shirt, but it is obvious he is good enough. If we are lucky, the depth chart will reflect true competition, not slots based on age or class. This is a unique time for the Huskers, the skill positions especially are loaded with inexperience...gotta go with giving these guys the experince needed to develop confidence and push thier mates from a drive to want to be the guy. A static depth chart based on age, not performance is a luxury this team cant afford. We need game experience across the skill position depth chart to build a champion... Wouldnt mind at all if burkhead, White, ,Jones and Mendoza, all shift around throughout the season because of thier practice play... you know the competition is fierce, and the depth and experience we all know we need, will reward the program.
  12. Ward, K Reed or SUH at goal line, we are situationaly deep. No one really knows the inexperienced guys accept those practicing with them this spring and fall. I like Ward on his speed and size for a whoe lot of situations, especially 3rd and short. Tall guys are good at seam running, if his hands are good he may have even more upside, he can hurdle and stride, thats difficult to imagine but it is a whole nother talent.. K Reed is 230 and powerful. Could easily play in the backfield when situation fits. SUH at the goal line? hell yes. if the oline is right with their assignments, we have the talent at RB to do the job, wont matter much who it is. The offensive coaching squad has the playbook and the players to fit them into any situation. Lee spreading the field is the threat no one will be able to counter without sacrifice, the run game will be there if the passing game is anywhere near where we should be with this group of recvrs..
  13. Here is a link to home town article on Brent. Didnt know he also was State Shot Put champ, besides All State in Baskeball...the guy might be IT. http://www.willistonherald.com/articles/20...xt#blogcomments
  14. At Signing was hoping for this, a lineman good enough to make the rotation as a freshmen. It seemd from the information during his recruiting that he had the intangibles, really great feet and endurance. obviously that little bit of information doesnt translate into performance, but its been a long time since the Oline has been impacted by a recruit. Would be just great if he gets in the rotation or becomes a fill in player for injuries. if the dude is good enough get him in there, because he'll get better playing even in a back up role. the ability to run from the guard slot is necessary in so many packages....bodes well for his career if he can hold the rotational slot at guard just below the 2 deep, he'd make the travel squad then wouldnt he? says alot for any freshman in a big program, to be good enough this early....makes future depth, in forward years easier to come by. Meyers one and done, if BQ can take and hold that slot next year, thats a big win for the Oline for 3 more years.
  15. Brooks is a potential monster but you're right - he has to put it together. As (allegedly) good as he is, the fact that he has barely sniffed the field when we had savvy but less-gifted athletes like Peterson and Swift starting is a huge red flag. Antonio Bell could find some PT coming his way this year, as could Khiry Cooper, if Brooks doesn't emerge. And I agree about Meno and Paul. Paul was a four-star WR coming in, and hasn't done much of much since. It's time. Time, time time! Amukamara is, by all accounts, a fairly gifted athlete. But far too often you'll see him standing around, or whiffing on a ballcarrier, or just plain out of position. He needs to step up and become that tiger he's supposed to be. Dejon Gomes is (hopefully) lighting a fire under Amukamara this summer. Agreed that guys like Gomes are critical to NU. We need him to either push Amukamara or play instead of Amukamra. Another is Anthony Blue. He needs to really step up. And then too we have Dennard. The trio of Dennard, Gomes, and Blue will in large part determine the success of the CB's --- by either pushing or replacing West and Amukamara. Good news is that lizzari Middleton turned some heads this summer. its always these surprises that help shape the position battles to come. Rick Henry in the O Line wasnt #1 but will probably see as many snaps as whoever is, depth is such a huge part of this game and it looks like the depth is emerging across most positions, still wondering if the North Dakota lineman with the great feet will get on the field early, with a few OLineman bumped, it could happen that a new guy could make the two deep. Will Shields was the Last Frosh to come in and crack the lineup early, he had the skills and game from day 1. Asante getting tutoring from Minter is huge as well, can't help but get better from that kind of tutoring. Minter has the benefit of many years of pro ball, Asante can leverage that, then Asante is a better player. They are also reporting that Ankarah looks ready physically, that is good news too because if we get hit with injury we'll need some young talent, too red shirt him or not becomes the question....extra depth can be deferred with RS status, can have the guy ready but never need to use him. TE's, they are saying are scheduled to be playing some fullback, could definately see Khyler Reed in that role. Watson has a huge tool kit its going to show this year.
  16. I will take Lee based on the rest of the team. KU will need to outscore their opponents big time to stay in every game, this will not be possible against NU or a host of their other opponents who do play good to excellent defense. Reissing is one of 11, his recvrs are very good as is the slot and Mangino is a very good coach who handles kids well. Still Lee will win the battle on the basis of the whole team being better than the package R has around him. Lee will need to be serviceable to just stay even, KU's oline will have its hands full with NU's Dline meaning R could find his backside hurting after this game. Meanwhile without Mortenson and Rivera at LB KU will struggle to stop our power and inside game short and middle levels, leaving us lots of opportunity for deep balls where productivity per catch will go sky high. No Problem what so ever picking Lee here. KU will be lucky to be 4 and 5 going into our matchup.
  17. arguably, saftey play was the weakness of the defense last year. Missed tackels by way of out of position players, as opposed to whiffd tackels where the opponent ran through the tackler, were better than the 3 previous years. Safteys will be key to increased turnover margin as well....Here is to hoping that PJ Smith or any other of the new guys brings the safety position in line with the growth of the rest of the defense. The LB's should make the DL look good, personally not worried about Crick or any of the backups, by mid season barring injury these guys should be on a role confident and mean. DB's will be far better than the past few years, Sanders is a stud coach who improves these guys play. After Safety, DE is my biggest concern.
  18. i disagree about it only working for a few weeks for KC. the average PPG before they switched to a spread offense was 12.5 through 6 games. after switching to the spread offense the average PPG was 21.6. that is almost a 10 point average difference and it was sustained over an extra 4 games. before moving to the spread KC averaged 123.16 yds passing. after switching to the spread KC averaged 221.6 yds passing. that is a gain of 100 yds per game passing by switching to the spread. im not gonna calculate it but KC also averaged more rushing yards per game after switching to the spread. you will not convince me that the spread will not work in the NFL because i have seen it work! size is also not quite the issue some make it out to be in the NFL, smaller qbs can typically move better and avoid the pressure so they do not typically get hit as often as the large standing target type qbs. to prove that point even further drew brees measures in at 6'0" and 201 lbs. he has averaged 17 sacks a season over his career. Ben roethlisberger is considered a very mobile big man qb he is 6'5" and he weighs in at 241 lbs. he has averaged 39 sacks per season over his career. ganz is almost identical in size to drew brees by the way. i think i have proved my point... HBR; You have demonstrated your point well. KC did as you said, and looked fairly good at times doing it. I agree with you about the spread in the NFL, it can work and if it were given the same amount of time to manage talent into it, as many of the other systems require.....it would be as legitimate as any other offense. counter programming a spread that has been coached up with experinced players is no easy task, especially if you dont see it every week. its a given that on any given sunday a defense or offense has the upper hand against a given opponent, this is without regard to generalities about systems being run.
  19. For once I'd like to see a former Husker as a starting QB or at least a back up for an NFL team but I don't think that Ganz is a NFL type QB but I'm really hoping to be wrong. I wish him luck I really do because Zac Taylor didn't make it at Tampa and Keller didn't make it at Oakland or was it Tampa Bay, I don't know lol. I figured with all the QB's we had in Callahans era that Taylor would've made it somewhere because he wasn't as mobile and he had a rocket of an arm and was pretty accurate at times but Jon Gruden didn't give him the time or day at Tampa. Further investigation unveils that Keller was given a tryout as an unsigned free agent in Tampa Bay, while he was signed and waived in Oakland. Ganz got bad advice. Should not have gone anywhere near the situation he's now obliged. the coach is a fan of the ks kid, said so on the interview and put #1 money on him, Ganz beat him and could beat him every time, but the coaches ego will be the determining factor on what goes down.... Bad advice is bad advice, Ganz just got a load of it.
  20. What about Matt Herrian? I seem to remember him having a bit of success... (and I remember him absolutely handling me when we played Pierce in HS. ) Reeds speed is a double whammy because when he isnt the intended recvr, he can get to the LBr or saftey and actually complete a blocking assignment. Our TE play has been good but not great, the shortfall is in blocking and particulary when assigned to block in space. Reed gives us a dinemsion on every down he plays that we dont have when he is on the sidelines.
  21. Fandom must be pleased with this game. Reasons 1 We have two quarterbacks who can play. LatWash performance was huge, unbelievable almost. 2 Antonio Bell is the real deal and the REC position and its question marks seems to be in good stead. 3.The frosh LB's were damn good, even kreikmeyer was making a lot of tackles. 4 Safety depth is so much better, and thus we will not have to suffer the slings and arrows of poor tackling, because someones ready behind everyone, seemed true of corner backs as well. 5 RB will not be a problem, the young guys all made some good runs. 6 TE deepest position on the team....K reeds speed is unmatched by anyone in B12.....flat out eats yards. 7. OLine 2 deep is solid....which is what we need across the board, and some of these guys have great upside, DJ Jones was according to one guy just lights out. 8 Punter we may have 3 to choose from, thinking each had 1 over 50. 9 Returns, Bell brought 3 out from inside the 5 to near the 30, Marlow had one really good return...whats not to like. 10. Last fandom ? mark was DE, from the broadcast....it sure sounded like the young guys there were making plays too. when you think about this mix of youth and experience, if this team gets chemistry they can play with anyone. Helu, Lawrence, Paul out, and they will all be big contributors next fall. The speed of MAY, PJ Smith, Osborne, Compton, fisher will allow this defense to play the spread at a whole new level. With our Dline we are now poised to return to top 10 defense. The reversal of the take away ratio is a near certainty with such a fast strong middle D. this will put enormous pressure on QBs....so expect a lot of picks. Yes indeed the pieces of the puzzle are in place, quality depth,,,,,great coaching....skys the limit if they come together as a team... damn that was nice to see Latravius....you were bold enough to step up and say look at me... wish you were a freshman...because you've got skills.
  22. Hes paired up with Terrence Moore too. I like the rosters they have created a real challenge for those interested in quality distribution statistics and multi phased logics. The challenge for Fandom is how your own projections made up from your own accumulated sentiment would call this thing......its a unique opportunity....fisher and May on red, compton and whaley on white pj smith behind the red, Asante behind the white pups.. very interesting....throww in the wild card where the QB is in a green Jersey....does that mean La Travius will not be able to bust loose? If only we knew... All that said, I am going to take The White team. (reserve the right to change my gut call by tonight.)
  23. In my humble opinion Rex Burkhead will redshirt because there are just too many guys ahead of him who have been in the system for a year or more: Helu, Castille, Okafor, Ward, etc. And if you believe what RB coach Tim Beck said, Lester Ward is really coming on strong. Basically, as a rule true freshmen only play out of sheer dire need. Now could Rex see the field as a true freshman? Sure, but I wouldn't count on it. Brent Qvale, whose name breaks the Qu rule of the English language, but I digress terribly, and Thaddeus Randle will redshirt more than likely as well-and for the same reason(s) as Rex. Plus Thaddeus Randle is listed as 6'1" 255 rivals.com -- There is no way he'll see the field as a true freshman DT at 255 pounds. (To clarify about Randle...there is a way he could see the field as a 255 true freshman but there would have to be an extraordinary set of circumstances.) Yours is Conventional thinking probability for truth value is high. Burkhead is needed as a blocker first and so he can be fitted into the slot and be asked to learn less, and less is better for a true freshman. The slot receiver for Watsons bigger plan is the guy who unlike Mendoza can get into space and take someone out. Rex has the characteristics of the guy to do this, a team player first, who can make a huge contribution because of his willingness to undergo his initiation as a role player first. Qvale is also an outlier, in that the guy has the feet and his basketball production indicates he can run, if J Burkes is a ? mark, Qvale can be slotted into the mix and brought along in packages, again breaking away from expectations providing depth and preparation. Generally Freshmen should be redshirted unless they posess distinct qualities to expand potential for the holistic package. Randle has speed and lower body power, and that combination cant be taught, if he's anywhere close to above average, and ready now, he can get/be as much benefit from playing as redshirting. The DL will be key, Crick and baker might have what it takes, to shatter all illusions of doube and triple teaming SUH. If they dont, and Randle shows in practice he is special... than put him into rotations and bring him along now. I see these 3 as having the intangibles necessary to make a contribution to the depth chart right away. If that potential is real and not imagined than we can expect a better outcome for the coming years team. The slot rec and tight end give us more than recvr potential, these two positions can add blockers in space, and me thinks we have massive potential if we have those special guys in space who wont be denied. Kyler Reed is one, Burkehead the other. The ability to do power option and spread is available to Watson, B12 teams are ill prepared for a speed power team....a few key pieces and oila...magic. .
  24. there were many close games where the stats show that rebounding and missed free throws were the margin of difference. the final stats show it per game. use the minutes played stat to figure out who was productive and who was not. clearly it becomes evident....rb per min, stls per min, points per min, blks per min...positive contributions per min sum shots made, blks, stls rebounds....per minute. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/teams/stats?teamId=158
