  1. I live in Chicago, so this is fantactic for me. So glad we joined the BIG....about 4 road games are w/in 3 hours of my house every year. This will be a great week. If you want to do this trip and not spend a fortune....stay in a hotel outside the city and take the Metra (nice train) or El (not so nice train) into the city. It's cheap and the Metra is really nice...you can have a beer on the way in and enjoy a nice, quite ride. Use Priceline and bid on a hotel near one of the lines. I'm sure, with a little effort, you can get a room at a 3 star property for less than $60. And don't buy tickets in advance....buy them on the street half hour before kickoff. You will probably be able to get in for $20. This game will not be a sellout. Here's an idea....get a room at the Best Western - Kenosha (WI) harbor, on lake Michigan. It's about 1:15 north of Soilder Field. In mid to late September Chinook (King) and Coho Salmon, along with some nice Steelhead...and monster Brown Trout, swim into the harbor by the tens of thousands. The hotel is right on the water, and there are so many fish in there they are litteraly stacked in there like chordwood. Even if you don't fish it's quite the site: watching them jump and boil all over the place. The riprap bank is a busy place because all the locals know the fish are "in." I think you could get that hotel for about 80 bucks. Fish for a couple of hours and then go to the Husker game.....COULD LIFE GET ANY BETTER! Note: bring heavy line (the fish are from about 8 - 30 pounds...and they don't like to get caught), 3/4oz spoons....KO Wobblers work well. And they like big crank baits. Just stop at the local bait shop and they'll hook you up. Night fishing can be even better....get a flasher and a glo-spoon (KO Wobbler). When they hit it's like the force of Ahman Green going the other way.
  2. I don't like it. When I played football in HS the coaches kid was the featured back and got more than his share of the carries. We had a good team, and other guys got the ball, and we rushed for a zillion yards, but in the back of my mind I know that most of the guys on the team (including me) thought that the only reason that coaches kid got all those carries was because his father was the HC. The kid was a good kid and a decent player, but he was by far not the best back on the team. There were 3 guys on the roster that were better than him. My Son went to HS and played football. The program (and all the athletic programs at the school) practiced nepotism to the extreem...."if you had a reletive in a position of power you were pretty much penciled in an employee, or you were given preferrential treatment if you were an athelete. That school is the worst in their conference at just about everything. They totally suck, and have sucked since I moved here (Chicago suburb) in 1990. I see the Pelini kid got the start at center on Saturday...over the other kid he was competing against. I wonder how the team feels about that? I like Ben Cotton as a TE....through his career he has been a steady performer - I'm glad he's a Husker. Aren't there some other Cotton's on the roster? Scholerships? IMO....kids should go out and make their own mark in society. Don' be following parents or uncles around...it just doesn't look good. The purpose to growing up is going out in the world and taking what your family tought you and use it to bring a positive experience to others.
  3. The problem is not that we get blown out.....it's that we get blown out like a decent D1 team blows out a poor D2 team (actually, much worse). That fact we cannot overlook. For whatever reason, we have games where we look totally unprepared from the get-go, or the moment like it looks like they have found a crack in our defense....the whole team goes, "well, this game is over; where is the bus?" And that is coaching...pure and simple. Whether it's lack of skill in recruiting or lack of skill in game preparation (or adjustments)...call it what you may, it's lack of coaching either way. That's bad. And it's even worse if the players think...in the back of their mind...."listen, I don't want to play for this coach. I don't believe in his system. I don't like the way he treats me and other players. I don't think that winning is worth it in this situation."
  4. This team quits on their coaches. The evidence is too clear. Even when we were on the winning side of all those wild blowouts against inferior Big 8 and Big 12 teams....we didn't put up rushing numbers like Wisconsin or Ohio State did agains us this year. If you disagree with me your basically saying that talent wise Wisconsin vs. N in the Big 10 Championship is about the same as N vs. Kansas, circa 1987. Except it appears that there was a greater talent discrepency in the Wisconsin/NE game, because Kansas was able to hold the Huskers to less than 500 yards rushing and they only gave up 55 points. Look at the evidence! When we get blown out we get blown out in historic fashion....and Saturday night it could have been worse.
  5. I don't get the Pelini Show here in Chicago, but a buddy of mine informed me that Bo was not on his show following the game. What is this telling us? Is it because he was just too emotionally bankrupt after the game, given the tremendous beating we took? Or, is it because he had a meeting with someone after the game concerning the future of the program, and he was too upset to do that show given the context of the meeting? I would like to know what everything is thinking about that? IMO....there is no way they would release the HC after he took the team to conference championship game, but after a beatiing like that anything can happen.
  6. 152 is in the end zone closer to Bucky sideline and 410 is on Husker sideline at about the 30 yard line. Is it possible that these two sets of tickets are coming from two different sources? I am traveling from Chicago to the game w/o tickets and I'll be buying outside the stadium, so I'm trying to get a handle on which sections will be primarily NE.
  7. If you have ever considered traveling to an away game, as I do quite often (including this game), THIS is the game you should attend. The eyes of the WORLD will be focused on this game, and our Higher Power chose the University of NEBRASKA to be thrust into this despicable situation. This is our opportunity to reflect a proper perspective on college football and how it can function with respect and decency. Believe it or not, many will blame this horrible situation not only on Penn State, but also on college football in general, and how it operates as a cash cow to major acedemic institutions. Because of the power major college football programs accumlate over the years, they are allowed to operation outside the rules of the academic institution, and in this case, outside the law. Even more so, our PLAYERS and COACHES are in a very difficult position. They need our support in College Station more than they needed it in Madison. TO should attend, Perlman should attend, and YOU should attend. This may turn out to be the most significant game in the history of college football. Our thought-out response is needed. On a side note....we are about 15% into this story. It will grow considerably in the next 4 weeks. Last Saturday, I tweeted "Joe Pa will not be coaching Penn State when they play Nebraska"...nobody believed me....and now I believe this story is in it's infant stage.
  8. I'm having one on Spring Street. My niece goes to school there and we're having a tailgate party on her lawn. I believe it's in a student housing area....I'm going to take everyone's suggestion and bring a ton of beer to pass out. Me and the Kettle (wife) are kinda unique because we were born and raised in Wisconsin, but their football program was crap when I lived there so nobody followed them. Wisconsin was a totally Packer state at the time. Now, I'm N and my entire family (8 brothers, 1 sister) is W. I hope like hell it's not too hostile on Saturday. I don't mind being called an A-Hole by a mob of drunks, I just don't want anyone to throw something at me. You can stop by and I'll have a beer or two for you....maybe some Point Special Beer!
  9. Does anyone know what section(s) UNL was sent....or what corner of the stadium? I'll be looking for tickets and I would prefer to sit with (or, close to) the Husker crowd. GoBigRed!
  10. There's no way anyone could have called a screen play to slow down the rush....our playbook does't HAVE a screen play (except that little slip-screen we run twice every 3 years...that we now can't execute, anyway).
  11. We committed penalties because we were getting beat. UW beat the liv'in hell out of our offensive line. They were much better than us last night....we are not good enought to broadcast our offensive intentions and just pound it down an opponents throat. Our O-line is "average." Congrats to UW...last night you guys were "all that!"
  12. I like the names! Initially I thought they sounded stupid. But then I started to read through all the threads and determined none of us rocket scientists could come up with anything better....so, now I lik'em. Then, I started thinking....their unique, and no other conference dares to name their divisions in such a prideful way, so maybe the names will grow on us. All the other conferences are so darn geographically named....why lump our conference in with all those other wannabees. And Big Red fits perfectly in the Legends Division....we ARE a legendary program with legendary names and the best record in football over the past 50 years. I hope Delaney keeps the names....I think their cool!
  13. Another thing wrong with the world....if I go into my bosses office and say, "listen Joe, I'd like your permission to interview for another job." Joe would say, "sure, I believe an unempoyed person SHOULD be seeking work. Go out and interview for as many jobs as you like, and make sure you take home all those stupid plants when you clean out your desk this afternoon." And I would have SO much leverage since I failed to meet my quota 2 out of the last 3 months. And when I didn't meet quota 2 months ago I was publicly reprimanded by the president of the company. And I'm in the printing business where loyalty is never discussed. However, in an industry where words like teamwork, and family, and loyalty are contantly throw in our face as qualities necessary for success....dudes can bolt at soon as any kind of job competitive job opening is available. Why didn't my Mother raise a successful football coach!
  14. Someone tried to sell me 50 yard line tickets at face value to B12 CCG on Craiglist by identifying themselsves as an agent for a UK Travel Agency using "Royal Mail" for delivery/payment and Western Union. Their story...."we bought these tickets as a gift for a promotion for one of our biggest clients, and then the deal with them fell through. We just want don't want to get stuck with the tickets." I called the travel agency in the UK and they had never heard of the person the listed the tickets on Craigslist. Should have know better....those Brits hate American football. There's no way they would be buying American fooball tickets for a big client. I don't know if I should list the name of the person who is committing this fraud (email address)? I would hate to see someone get burned by this scam. It really preys on honest people wanting to see a football game at a reasonable price.
