That game was ugly last night. My son is a Bills fan, so that was rough. We determined that Josh hasn't been right since he dumped his long time girlfriend and moved on to Hailey. I think we've cracked the case!

Part of the reason why I hope the Taylor/Travis breakup occurs in the offseason...

The one moment where it all came together perfectly was when the pack of wild squirrels got to play dodgeball.

I believe that the downfall of society can directly be traced to when dodgeball in PE was banned.

For us it was when we played sandlot football in the gym on rainy days sitting on those 1'x1' scooter things. It was mayhem. You were as likely to score a touchdown as you were to crush a finger.

Scooter days turned into bumper car days so fast in my PE class. Pretty sure we had more concussions from headfirst collisions there than we ever did in football.

At trade schools the kids can make a direct connection to the math and reading to the projects they're doing.

Agreed, which is why those need to be more of an option for some students.

Kids taking 8th grade math learning about slope intercepts aren't actually applying it to anything outside of a story problem.

Disagree, because at that point, they have very little idea what their interests are going to be post-HS where those concepts may be applicable. You have to provide a well-rounded education for all, and that includes those concepts being reviewed/retaught at the HS level.

Sucker punching another student or possessing marijuana isn't really a grey area, it's a crime.

Agreed, which is why the honus is on local law enforcement to enforce those as crimes.

Ha!  right?  No one ever says "Man, I really want to teach middle school!"

A friend of mine left HS to teach at a middle school, where he's thriving at.

He also served in Afghanistan, so he's seen some s#!t.

    Totally agree

The problem is those art classes simple CANNOT BE MANDATORY.

The hardest classes for teachers to have control over are art/music classes when they are mandatory.  It needs to be totally optional an elective.  Middle school boys destroy art and music teachers lives.

We also need to treat computer programming as a foreign language.  It makes way more sense than forcing a kid to take 2 years of Spanish.

Middle school boys destroy everyone's lives; let them be mandatory until HS, then make them elective.

I agree about computer programming, too. STEM classes are becoming more and more popular at the elementary level; make those more mandatory to get kids interested and invested at a younger age, then make higher-level tech classes available at the HS level for those who are interested.

    Knuckleheads in school.

If that kid doesn't want to be there and is an a$$ and their parent signs off, they go into the military.

The second wave has to be a pre-apprenticeship program with school 1/2 the day and work half the day.

I don't know if "forced" conscription is the answer. I'm more in line with "local governments need to do more to force parents to parent their children", i.e. stop letting kids slide on things like truancy, fighting or vaping. If school staff had the support of parents, a lot of these issues would be easier to deal with.

As a teacher, I think the #1 thing that needs to be done to improve schools is to get rid of all the knuckle heads.  Politicians keep talking about mental health; well...time to pony up and do something.

    I agree 100%

Send kids to alternative schools and counseling centers when needed. Open career centers and stop jamming math, reading,  and writing down everyone's throats beyond  7th grade.  Let the kids that "don't care" go learn a trade or pickup some type of work/life skills.

Alternate placements can be fantastic for students who can't "fit" into a typical gen ed building. However, reading, writing and math still need to be core subject materials at the high school level, especially at a trade school. Augment these with business and professional classes to show students who are uninterested in them how they are used in a real-world setting.

@teachercd and @Guy Chamberlin are also spot on: you gotta find a way to fund the arts.

Schools should start pressing charges when fights or assaults or illegal possessions happen instead of suspensions.

This is a tricky area; students want the suspension because it gets them out of class and/or school. Plus, pressing charges depends a lot on the county attorney in the area and how far they want to press things like behaviors in schools. One way to handle this is to go back to your main point and provide more funding for health experts/specialists for schools.

I just don’t see Wisconsin and Iowa as any better than the teams we’ve been beating up on. Maybe a LITTLE better They’ve all been beating up on each other too. Iowa gets beat by Minnesota and scrapes by Purdue, Wisconsin gets beat by Iowa and scrapes by Illinois before the key injuries. Iowa has played some horrendous competition thus far. And their only game against a good team, and the bad offensive team might I add, they got scorched.

For all of our injuries on offense, I would also argue that the more injuries we’ve gotten, the better the offenses played, turnovers aside Especially as HH settles in. I would argue that if the turnovers go away, 3-1 or 4-0 is indeed probable.

Iowa and Nebraska are remarkably similar this season; both giving up relatively similar amounts of yards and points, while holding teams to similar amounts of yards and points on D. Iowa has a stronger strength of schedule.

Wisconsin has, statistically, the best offense but worst defense of the three, while also playing the hardest schedule of the three.

There are tons of hurdles to consider with a new guy and the program's recent QB transfer history isn't exactly one to fawn over - Tanner Lee was OK. Casey Thompson was OK. Jeff Sims was, unfortunately, really poor.

I don't go as far back as some do, but the last great transfer QB was, well, I'd like to say his name, but I hear if you say it into a mirror 3 times, he appears and takes the OC job at Iowa.

I would argue HH did more for us to lose the NW game than Sims did against Minnesota. Differences are just HH's mistakes happened earlier in the game, the rest of the team stepped up against NW, and they didn't have a miraculous 4th down TD catch.

I'm not really calling for us to give Sims another shot - at least not anymore. But I don't think HH is doing any more to win games than Sims was. You could make that argument with the NIU/La Tech games where he was protecting the ball better, but at this point our winning games has very little to do with how the QB is playing.

I mean, Haarberg is 5-1, and Sims is 0-2.

I'm not talking about Sims at all.

There's a whole very wide lane of criticism and frustration that could/would be significantly more amplified toward HH's play that would be only based on him and have nothing to do with Sims. But, we saw Sims first, HH has the feel good local story and has the grace of being the backup, so we take it pretty easy on him. He's a pretty objectively bad quarterback and I can't help but root for him a bit more and not mind when he does boneheaded stuff.

Two games in a row we've seen awful turnovers from HH, and while we've all closed the book on Sims for good I haven't seen a single person claiming that Chubba should get a shot to see what he can do, for example.

I don't think anyone is claiming HH to be an objectively good quarterback; he's doing just enough to win games, though.

And Chubba can't climb over Sims to be #2 on the depth chart; the ship has sailed on him, too.

Rhule wouldn’t be doing his job if he was going to accept Haarberg as the only option at starting QB next year. Rhule knows the team will need more offense next year. This is because the schedule isn’t filled with weak Big Ten West offenses, but it’s also not realistic for the defense to be as strong as it is this year.

Well, of course; no one is saying he is. It's all but confirmed that they're in the hunt for another transfer QB (and if rumors are to be believed, they're willing to pay a pretty penny for one). But, there's no guarantee that they get one to come here, or find one that can beat out HH. So, as I said, don't be surprised if the scenario where HH takes the first snap next year comes to fruition.

To relate to a different sport, Reggie Miller had about the ugliest jumper, no one wanted to change it because his shot went in more than not, and the shot gurus were worried correcting his form would ruin his shot.  While there's not a lot to 'ruin' for Haarberg, . This is stuff that should have been corrected in HS/Middle School, but I do wonder how much they threw the ball and had a coach who cared. As long as they won more than they lost, they didn't care about his mechanics.

There are some rumors out there about potential transfers for next year, but I think we all need to be prepared for another year of HH while Kaelin gets acclimatized to college. Hopefully HH puts in the work necessary to improve his footwork and mechanics so he can become a more complete QB.
