  1. I just don't understand this sentiment. Why is yours or NU's pride at all associated with the number of scholarships offered? I say do whatever gives us the most success in recruiting. If that means we offer every player at every position every year, then so be it. IMHO there are probably 500+ high school players with the potential to play for NU, and the notable differences between those players isn't much. There are certainly probably 500 that can play for NU, but it's slightly embarassing to think that we would need to offer 500 (or 200 as in past years) kids in order to get 25 committments. We have almsot 25 defensive linemen with scholarship offers. Our DE offers range from a 205 pound kid to a 265 pound bahemouth. The noticible differences are very noticible. There has to be 5 or 6 of those DL prospects we really want more than the other 20, and 5 that we'll settle for. The middle 15 or so might not stand appart, but there are a few in that list that are considerably above the rest. What happens if the first 5 to committ are in the "settle for" pool? Now we not only discourage others from committing but also have to take a scholarship from another position because he's a "you find room for him" type of player. All I'm saying is I just don't like the idea of offering $125,000 and a chance to play football in red to 100 players only to see 90% of them find greener pastures. That's what slightly hurts my pride. Ask some of the walk ons what that scholarship means to them. Ask some of the in-state recruits like Marsh what that offer meant to him...then ask some of these other guys that we've blanket offered. I'm betting the "value" of that offer is slightly different to the various parties. I know recruiting starts earlier these days - but I still think if we have 1 RB position open in this class we should be able to concentrate on 3 targest and get 1. If we have 4 OL openings, we should be able to identify 10 and concentrate on them. 8 DL prospects maybe 15-18 targets. That leaves a lot of guys still saying no...but also makes sure they know that we are very interested because we don't just offer anyone. Frankly I like Texas's style of recruiting. If they are out on Aaron Green they don't continue to recruit - they move on. In the end it means they find players that REALLY want to play for Texas. Isn't that what we always want here at NU. I don't see how you identify players that REALLY want to play for NU when you just throw offers around as though it doesn't represent a scholarship and a $125,000 committment from the university to their future. If it's just a piece of paper fine - but I think it should mean more. - IMHO - Doesn't
  2. From what I've been able to find it hasn't beent that bad. www.gardneredge.com is the local paper out there. He had a start last week where he went 6 innings giving up only 1 hit, then the reliever came in during the 7th and gave up 6 runs. It's hard to find stats on his season though.
  3. You're right - Stanford I can see, but can't believe Alabama has that many offers out. I would think they could "sort-of" pick and choose. Not quite at Texas's level because they don't have that much tallent in their back yard...but considering their recent recruiting domination, facilities, coaching, history, recent success, weather, women, etc, etc - I wouldn't hesitate to accept an Alabama offer. However, going against Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Miami, Florida St, Tennessee, LSU is not the same as us going against Oklahoma and Texas so I guess I can see why they need to have so many offers out. If NU still offers 100+ kids by April after a national championship though...my pride will be slightly hurt.
  4. If the second QB is just to add extra competition, do we even need the 2nd QB? I'm not sure on the scholarship count this year, but it can't be so high that we should recruit someone just to add a little competition. Spano, T-Mart, Green, Carnes, Turner, Kellogg, Marsh, etc, etc...since all of them have at least 3 years left as a Husker, I think that's enough competition to keep these guys busy for the near future. It's not as though we forsee a gap (as there is this year without a junior QB). Depth isn't necessarily a problem, quality depth may be - but since the odds are this 2nd QB will not excede the tallent of Turner, then I say give the scholarship to a deserving walk-on or another player. Is a 2nd quarterback that will provide competition, but is unlikely to contribute on the field more important than a lower rated offensive tackle or possible 'diamond in the rough' wide receiver?
  5. I have a feeling Tyler Gabbert decommitted because he is Tyler Gabbert. Was Suntrup really at the spring game? I must have missed his name being on the list. If so, that's very encouraging to see we're still in on this kid. And a school like USC pulls in Parade All-Americans at QB year after year after year. Just look at what Michigan has in Forcier and Robinson in one class, plus some more highly touted guys coming in or just arrived. Our QB situation as weak as it is, I don't see any reason why we can't get two top targets at our position, unless we just flat out fail to reel them in in the recruiting battle. And a large number of USC/Michigan players bolt after their Freshman/Sophmore years. I'd rather give a scholarship to a 3* that I know is going to be on the team competing, learning, and more importantly teaching 4 years from now than a 4 or 5* that will be gone, never having played a down. I would assume, like any job, the rookies are a little bit of a drain on the unit. They take time away from the other players while they are being taught. I am sure Cody Green took plenty of time away from the development of Lee and t-mart last year. There is nothing wrong with that until Green decides to transfer, then it was all for nothing. Personally, I am not a huge fan of schools like USC, that hoard large amounts of tallent based on reputation, only to watch a bunch of it walk out the door. Doesn't seem efficient from the "business" aspect of the team.
  6. You always need to recruit for the future but to say there is a considerable hole in the linebacking corps just isn't true. It's probably our youngest and deepest spot on the roster right now. I think you missed the "for the future" piece. Doesn't equate to "right now". I'm with you though - I'm really excited to watch our LB play this year (and next year). Where we had holes last year, the DL was able to be disruptive enough to compesate. This year it looks as though we'll be a more complete defense, but still be able to maintain that disruption. Really exciting.
  7. "rail-thin" - that's always an encouraging assessment to read
  8. I think Green will get tired of the hoopla and commit somewhere in Oct. He'll take a few visits and then pull the trigger, hopefully for NU. I heard that Green is waiting until this thread's post count excedes that of Owa's...
  9. Wow. Thanks for posting. Living in Kansas City right now - african american youth are cast in a light that Lyons contrasts dramatically. It's a refreshing read with everything that is going on. It's good to see Nebraska's name mentioned in the same sentence as Rhodes Scholar. I wonder what "path" you'd be on to get there.
  10. Terrell Pryor is in college. If that's not enough to comfort you, go listen to his interview about Mick Vick and it will make the dumbest person you know seem like a Rhodes Scholar VERY TRUE
  11. If those were true quotes, and I'm guessing they were - I'm slightly worried about him being able to qualify academically. I've heard small children form sentences better than that. Maybe the author just did a piss-poor job of translating from tape.
  12. I can't count the number of times I've seen people post on this board something like "what makes you think recruits even read these boards?" They do. If you google "Husker Forum" or "Husker Message Board" you get huskerboard.com. If they are going to be reading anything - it will more than likely be this board. Once they see they have their own dedicated thread - they'll keep coming back to keep an eye on it. Wouldn't you if you were 17? I'd say if nothing else, reading these threads further emphasizes the fact that NU fans ARE the best (and most football educated) fans they will run into as recruits.
  13. I dont see Hankins as a husker to be honest. It appeared that he wanted a Husker offer to fluff his ego. I could be wrong but I dont see him in a Husker uniform. You might be right. But he is coming to the spring game. And I think he listed NU in his top five. So he does have some interest. It's just hard to say how serious he is. From the look of that offer list I don't know if he really needed an NU offer to fluff his ego. He doesn't have one the ellusive USC, Texas, Alabama, Florida offer...but I'd say he's got enough of them to warrant a little ego.
  14. Historically this is correct, and I'm sure it has a slight impact on an NU quarterback's evaluation. But, I don't think a quality QB that has the NFL measurables will have any problem making the NFL in our system today. The talk around Missouri is that Gabbert will leave early for the NFL. I don't see any reason why he couldn't have accomplished the same thing at NU that he has at MU. We just haven't had a prototypical NFL QB since the change in scheme. Hundley looks to fit that mold.
  15. If I remember right, didn't we lose a top DL prospect to UCLA last year that wanted to major in some sort of Engineering? His name was something like Owamagbe. Don't really remember - thought he was kind of a good player though.
  16. perhaps that's because going in they don't have that high of expectations for NU in the first place
  17. Pinkle offered 4 backs in last year's class that were 4* recruits...why wouldn't he this year? I wouldn't get extremely hung up on the 2800 number. I was trying to find out where that came from and everything I see adds up to around 2300. I could be missing something however. MaxPreps might not be reporting all of his games. Still an amazing number regardless. Much more amazing than 590. That's what I was able to find for the rushing yards of Pierson, Missouri's RB committ (also from St. Louis area). He averaged 15.5 yards per carry, to Standards 7.5. He just doesn't have 2300 yards because he didn't get to touch the ball 300 times. Seeing this I thought that maybe Pinkle was just missing Standard...but he managed to offer and receive a committment from Hannah, Standard's WR teamate. He also could probably have the committment of Suntrup, Standard's QB teamate if he offered based on this... I don't know. Something just seems odd to me. I'm sure he's a great player - but I would just like to know why with 2300+ yards his softmore year, and another 2300 his junior year...he isn't racking up offers by the dozen. He's not from East St. Louis and goes to a Catholic school. I mean like you said "5.7 type guys don't run for 2800 yards" Maybe there's something else that's keeping his offer number low. Max Preps seems to be fairly accurate based on articles I've seen in other places like this one.
  18. Didn't you also project OWA to be N? Oh. And Standard happened to run for 2800 yards last season. Most 3 star 5.7 type kids dont have numbers like that. Most 4 star 5.8 guys have more than just 2 offers - 1 being Iowa State, the other being NU which is building a reputation for just blanket offering the entire nation. Have you seen film of JT? He had been a hard NU lean since last year even going to the Holiday bowl on his own dime. That IMO is the reason the offer list is small. He has gamebreaking ability every time he touches the ball. Agree in regards to JT...which is why he has a lot more than 2 offers as well. And you're right, he would probably have a lot more if he wasn't already committed. I was talking about Standard though...someone who hasn't committed and isn't really a lean one way or the other it seems. It just suprises me (with Standard) Pinkle hasn't offered, or Illinois, etc. IF he really is a 4 star 5.8 guy that is.
  19. Didn't you also project OWA to be N? Oh. And Standard happened to run for 2800 yards last season. Most 3 star 5.7 type kids dont have numbers like that. 20. u need to work on a new sig aspeed. every time you post it means I have to scroll a full page.
  21. suck it up, he was just giving you a little crap. don't attempt to correct his statement...he wasn't the one that was trying to come off as the ACT genius. besides...I think you can be "on" the grammar police. you can be "on" a team, or "on" a police force...I can be "on" your mother (any time I want). same thing I think. also, I'm not 100% sure on this...but you aren't suposed to compare a 7th grade score with an 12th grade score. I haven't taken it in 10 years, so I'm not sure if they still test with pencils or with computers, but when I took the test there were multiple grade levels in the room with me and each grade level had a different color of testing sheet. That's because when they determine the score on the ACT, they equate a student's performance to the average performance of students at a particular age or grade level. This means that your 7th grade cousin scoring a 23, is not the same as if a senior in HS took it and got a 23. The senior would probably need to answer 70-80% of the questions correctly, whereas a 7th grader only needs maybe 20% because that will be the normative equivalent for their age. Determining the scores is statistics, and a 7th grader's normative group is with other 7th graders so their percentile rank and mean will be based on that group. DISCLAIMER: I am "sitting typing as fast as words come to my mind and not actually focusing on grammar itself" - please don't police my response.
  22. VERY nice. There are only a few located north of Lincoln...which means we have to convince almost all of our recruits to buy winter coats. I bet Bo & Co. have an awesome sales pitch for when a recruit talks about the cold, because they have to sell it nearly every time. Probably goes something like: "The classrooms are heated, your dorm room is heated, the cafeteria is heated, the weight room is heated, the film rooms are heated, Hawks center is heated. If you find yourself in a place that is cold, (except on saturdays) you are in a place that isn't helping you or this football team. Now get your a$ back to a heated room and study film slacker."
  23. Puts the total of DL offers over 20 now I think. So much for having our pick of the DL recruits this year. Looks like we are pretty well just blanket offering the entire spectrum. I know I've brought this up before, but we are going to end up having over 200 offers floating around out there. We have offers out to almost 20 OL as well, and we already have 3 committed. Note: I'm not doubting the staff, sometimes I'm just a little confused as to their position on a recruit. Seems to me, offering 20 DL recruits tends to water down the value of the offer. Before long, the running joke will be that everyone gets an offer from Nebraska.
  24. His first step is seems really slow. He studders on almost every play. I only watched the first few minutes, but it looks like he has 150+ pounds on every defender. Some looked like 125 pound rag dolls. At least we won't have to worry about Bo yelling at him though...the school he goes to seems fairly strict...
