  1. High school reported heights and weights are as reliable as a Dollar Tree sports watch. That is why I keep mentioning that if Sterup's height is accurate, because these guys almost always embellish. This is why coaches always measure height/weight for these kids as the first thing they do when they come on visits. There were a couple of kids who came up for January visits right when Bo was scrambling to fill out the class when he was originally hired. Bo watched tapes of the two kids, liked their videos. Bo knew the coach and took his word on their height/weight when he asked them to come up for a visit. We had every intention to take both of the kids. We got them up here, measured them out and both were WAY under their listed height/weight. Bo flipped his lid over getting lied to so badly about that. I remember Joe Ganz being one of the best. Joe self-reported he was 6'3, nearly 6'4 coming out of HS. Joe was barely 6'0 tall. Jesse Coffey was another. Guy is tall, but self-reported 6'7 290 out of HS when he was nowhere near that. Did not matter to anyone, because all the S&C guys knew they could put weight on him to make him into a B12 lineman. Kids and coaches do it just to do it sometimes. Other times, it's used to give kids a better 'look' to college coaches. Either way, all these numbers, including 40 times, are never reliable and should always be taken with a grain of salt. I respectfully disagree. The guys I listed have been to countless camps, combines, all-american games and other events where they were timed electronically and measured/weighed precisely. By the time the recruiting season gets going, and definately by the time it's winding down - an elite prospect will be fairly accurately reported. We already saw it with Ted Lampkin, originally listed at 5'9" was measured at a combine/camp at 5'7" and it's changed in most places. As for the kids Bo was chasing last minute his first year, I doubt they were considered "elite" and therefore he probably had nothing else to go by...nor were they probably local boys like Sterup. Ganz, he played at 6'1"/210 for NU. He was 6'3" in Rivals here but Ganz really went no where that would have been tracked, and it's not like he had a lot of offers to spark an interest in his true measurables. You're right, Coffey reported at 6'7" 290, but he's also on NU's roster as 6'7" 300lbs, so I'm assuming unless UNL is full of BS that one's accurate. Often this early there are discrepencies, but usually they error on the side that benefits the player (as in Lampkin's case). In Sterup's case that would be to make him shorter, not taller. I too mentioned earlier that I would like to see what he truely measures at because he's listed at 6'10" for basketball, but I'm doubting he drops much below 6'9". I certainly don't expect him to show up as 6'6" on Rivals after junior day.
  2. The AE program is excellent here. Check the link for more info. Did I read that wrong or isn't it offered in Omaha, not Lincoln. I'm assuming it's in partnership with UNL so obviously he'd be fine - but traveling back and forth to Omaha between practice, meetings, film review, weights, etc might be a little overwhemling.
  3. I'd never seen that list. #9 - that's pretty impressive when looking at the schools around us. ND, Northwestern, Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, etc. One knock on Nebraska however - he watched NU hoops at Allen Fieldhouse - that had to help KU. Live 30 miles from there and never been (perhaps because I dislike KU so much) but from what I gather it's an amazing experience. probably similar to Saturdays in Lincoln.
  4. He talks about his trip to KU here. Few noteable quotes if you don't want to read
  5. I'm guessing the fact that he's a 2-sport athlete is going to hurt him a little. If he was 100% football he'd be coming in around 290-300 by now. If he got on the NU roster he'll break 310 by his sophmore year. Here's a few recent OL recruits to take note of... Seantrel Henderson 6'8" :star :star (USC) Damien Robinson 6'8" :star :star (Mississippi St.) Matt James 6'8" :star :star (Notre Dame) Brice Schwab 6'8" :star :star (Arizona St.) Trent Spurgeon 6'8" :star :star (Arizona) Bobby Massie 6'8" :star :star (Mississippi) Matt Hall 6' 10" :star :star (Arkansas) Dann O'Neill 6' 8" :star :star (Michigan) Art Forst 6' 8" :star :star (Rutgers) Ken Plue 6' 8" :star :star (Purdue) ...most hover around 300-320, but a few of these guys wer 270-285. He's not as outside the norm as one might think.
  6. The exception and not the rule. A 20 year ago exception, at that. Just to show - there are 53 players on each NFL roster, with 32 teams. 53*32=1696. I used ESPN rosters, which lists players exceeding the 53 player roster limit, so lets just say 60 players for each team. 60*32=1920. Of all of those listed, only 20 players were in excess of even 6'8. Of those players, 3 were TE's, 1 was a DT, and 2 were DE's. The rest were OT's. That would mean barely 1% of every player listed on an NFL roster would be in excess of 6'8. On our own Huskers squad, in the last decade (because that is as far as I decided to look) we have had ONE player 6'8 or taller on our roster. That player is walk-on TE, Robert Barry. Is it impossible to succeed playing with height? No. Does it make it incredibly more difficult? HECK YES. I actually like Sterup as a prospect. But his height is actually his disadvantage, especially being as tall as he is in high school already. Those growth plates likely are not closed. That's all I'm saying. I kind of like the idea of him lining up, ball is snapped, he comes out of his stance and as the DT charges low he places his massive hand on the back of the guys helmet and pushes down - the DT gets a face full of turf. By the time he's a junior he can probably take care of a DT and a DE w/ his left/right hand and a little "ole'" blocking.
  7. I'm curious to see what he measures at junior day. Anything you read regarding Sterup and basketball lists him 6'10" or 6'11". Anything football related has him at 6'9". They always stretch you a little on the basketball rosters, but unless he slumps at junior day he's pushing the envelop on the measurables.
  8. i did after i pregamed over at georges and newyorker so read, i was drunk as hell. I saw him play twice. He has power, speed, and makes people miss. He just set a record with 31 straight pins and will take his 38-0 record against a husker wrestling recruit in the finals today. damn... 2010 Class B Championship Finals 189 - Tanner Sturgeon, Cozad, def. Ryan Randall, Blair, 9-3.
  9. First round is a stretch. I'd go more with 3rd-5th. He's had some shoulder issues if I remember right. I'm sure we'll know more as spring ball starts in a month. He has an away baseball game (Frontier/Kaw Challenge) on the 16th & 17th or April so I don't see him making it up for our spring game.
  10. Agree. I also don't think the coaches force players to redshirt. We shouldn't assumed that it's 100% the coaches decision. They can influence and pursuade, but ultimately you are asking the kid to give up another year of his life for the program. That's not something that is just decided in practice like running laps. It's a cooperative decision between coach and player. If the player does not wish to redshirt, he won't. He might not get any playing time and take the redshirt in the end anyway - but ultimately it's up to him. It's no different the other way around...it is discussed and evaluated prior to taking a redshirt away from a kid mid-season. It's not just a snap judgement in the middle of the game - though sometimes it may seem that way. It was discussed beforehand, probably when the decision was made to redshirt in the first place.
  11. Staples usually gives NU the benefit of the doubt, so I wasn't overly surprised to see one of ours' made the list. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/02/19/two-star/index.html Honestly though, I didn't recognize hardly any of these names. Some of them are probably a product of their environment, whereas put them on an NU/Texas roster and they wouldn't see the field. Since I enjoy counting stars, I'd also like to note how he mentions it's becoming more and more difficult for recruits to go undiscovered - it you're good, you'll get discovered.
  12. Our recruiting to replace the 4 we lose after this year is done. It was done in the 2009 and 2010 class. Very rarely does a freshman have an imediate impact - especially on the lines, so what we will be recruiting for the 11 class will be projected 2-3 years out. In this years class we need to be thinking about replacing Caputo (Reeves), Hardrick (Moore), M. Jones. Our Current sophmore class has no real contributers yet. The RFr. class has QVale and Sirles that should be contributing this year. A-Rod and Moudy will fit into this as well. Depth on the offensive line is imporant, but we are past worrying about the 4 we lose this year and we have a lot of quality OL that have been in the program for a year or more. With that sophmore class being small on OL, it means this class doesn't have to be that big. I say we stick with 3-4, unless a difference maker (westerman) wants on board. Anyone know how quick Farniok is? IMHO, as our offense migrates towards a more run based attack with QB's who will be moving outside of the pocket - we'll be looking for quicker, more mobile offensive linemen. The days of parking a fat-a$ at guard to pass block in his 3 foot radius is over, and Farnoik is huge. Dobson could probably get him down to 310 lean him out a bit though. As for DT. We'll be losing Stein, Moore, & Crick when this class comes in. In their place will be Guy & Rome, but after that there isn't much else in-waiting at DT. Some of the other guys like Pensick & Randle are kind of small. We are definately stocked at DE, so maybe someone will move inside? You've got to assume some of our DT recruits will be busts, so it looks to me like we actually might be a little thin at DT. Regardless, always take a difference maker. I don't care what position it is, if they can have an impact Pelini will make room. He'll fill the spots we have needs at, and if a couple of stars want to join us then we find a way to fit em in. Just wanted to point out that when the 2011 class comes in, Steinkuhler will be a RS Jr. and Moore with be a RS Sr. But you're correct that Crick will be gone by then. Pensick is being moved to the OL at the Center position for depth. Thanks, Nexus - should have clarified. Steinkuhler will be gone by the time the 2011 class is to the point that they are contributing.
  13. EZ - did you -1 all of the Big Time posts? Evened you out skull, red & carl.
  14. I agree. Especially after reading this article from an Arizona newspaper... Westerman Loves Texas I agree he'll probably be at Texas, but remember... He'll say something almost identical when he visits Nebraska, Alabama, etc. I think recruits have a website they pull templated statements from. "Love the coaches, great family atmosphere, awesome stadium, spectacular facilities, liked a lot of the current players, give it a 10, etc, etc, etc" There is a list of about 100, and they just check 4 or 5 of them off and the website generates the statement for them. My favorite: "It's dead even." (or some variation) - Then they go to UCLA.
  15. Speaking of KC teams, did Gardner go 6A this year? Gardner-Aquinas is always a great game, I hope they still keep it on the schedule. Bubba Starling (Gardner) is probably a KU commit assuming he plays football, but Lucas Powell made it up for the Iowa State game...not sure what came of it. Probably nothing considering the performance/outcome. Boomer Mays from Eudora was with him. 160 tackles as JR. Haven't heard anything about him either.

  17. I know a lot more goes into it, but if he is making his decision this spring then I find it hard to believe he'll be able to discover an atmposphere that can rival ours in the spring. Game day is spectacular, but it's pretty darn good at other schools as well. Spring however - we stand head and shoulders above 99% of the others.
  18. It's when we add guys like this to the OL that I begin to believe in that whole "Quarterbacks should be 6'4"+ " mumbo-jumbo. Carnes, Kellogg & Martinez might have a tough time seeing/throwing over this guy.
  19. No, no need to earn the degree...just the coursework required to meet the admission standards. It's no different than a high school kid taking 12-18 credit hours of college coursework while in HS and having it transfer in when they enroll as a freshman. When I was in college I took a number of JUCO classes at the same time. They were cheaper, easier, and the girls were dumber/sluttier.
  20. gotta give him credit though, he usually gives Nebraska the benefit of the doubt. He was pretty good to use this year. A lot of those SI guys have such an east coast bias.
  21. true, but I'd rather have him play under our coaches than theirs. But, at the same time he could probably start, or at least be a solid contributer in Ft. Scott - an excellent JUCO program. His year at FS could net him 200 minutes of playing time, where he'd be lucky to get 20 his first year in NU's program. If he plays at FS, he'll have 200 minutes of game-time experience going into his sophmore year (assuming he redshirts when he gets to NU). If he redshirts at FS, he'll have maybe 20 minutes going into that sophomore year - most against sun belt teams which are nearly the equivalent to those JUCO programs anyway, and/or on special teams.
  22. I think Mack Brown & Co. have no problem evaluating talent on their own. Assuming they just go down Rivals' list of Texas players 1-50 and make their offers lacks a basic understanding of both recruiting and how the rankings work. The best explanation I've seen has been from S. Mandel: "While Rivals' star-system isn't a definitive assessment of a recruit's talent, it's a pretty good indicator of how sought-after a certain prospect is." Because teams like Texas can almost have their pick of recruits - if Texas offers, the recruit imediately gets bumped up a notch in that "sought-after" measurement. Brown, Meyer, Kiffin & Saban will have a hard time not signing all 4+ star recruits for the simple fact that if the best teams in the country want you, you must be a solid prospect. It's logical, and to fault Rivals' for adding or weighting this component of their ranking would be an injustice to the recruits. If you're good, you're sought after...if you're not very good - you aren't. To say kids go unnoticed in today's world of you tube highlights, and streaming information is a stretch. It doesn't always work against us either. The same things happen when our coaches discover tallent. At the same time we uncover the "diamond in the rough" we generally alert Rivals to the prospect as well. Before you know it that diamond (Enunwa) becomes a "possible difference maker" and what was once a two-star risk, is a solid three-star early contributer.
  23. Depends on the scheme. I've noticed as teams migrate toward the spread their offensive linemen get taller and quicker. (with the exception of maybe center) Long arms helps fill those gaps, and they are moving more during run/pass blocking so they need to be quicker, especially in pass protection. If you look at a school like Georgia Tech, their OL generally maxes out at about 6'4. They can get under defensive linemen better and get that push they need for an option/run attack, whereas an offense that depends on the pass like cincinatti or tech have had a number of 6'6"-6'7" recruits over the last 5 years. I think you'd have a hard time finding any sort of "norm" though. Like you said, it ranges drastically. It probably has a lot to do w/ the preference of the coaching. The linemen probably fall into a partern of some sort. Everyone covetts that 6'5" QB. As for RB, I don't see much of a reason why a 5'7" guy can't perform as well a 6'2" guy. Tall receivers like Dez Bryant are optimal, but speedy guys like that 5'7 kid from K-State do just fine as well (when they catch the balls thrown to them anyway). Personally I'd rather not have a team of 5'9" CB's trying to guard 6'3" recievers, but some of those little guys can really jump. IMHO it's a case-by-case evaluation as long as they don't fall way out of the norms.
  24. Miles will be a longhorn. Name one kid from Texas who was offered a scholarship to play at UT who doesn't go there... ESPECIALLY at the Receiver position. People outside of Texas might go somewhere else, but there are VERY FEW who decline to play at UT. Here's some information for all of you guys who are not from Texas, UT is VERY hard to get into as a high school student. Their academics are top notch and unless you have like a 1300SAT out of 1600 then you can forget getting into that schoolUT in Texas is up there with Rice.. It has a better law school than SMU and a business school that is one of the best in the country. Their academics compete on some levels with ivy league schools. The campus is over 60,000... around here we call it a city within a city. They have their own buss system, their own mass transportation system with trains and everything. They're HUGE and are one of the top party schools in the country. The school is extremely liberal and pro gay/lesbian for the most part. 6th street in Austin has been known to be one of the top party spots in the world. The weather is nice, their football program brings in close to double what NU's does, their facilities are just as good if not better, their stadium seats more people and has a bigger score board, they are in the top 5 year in and year out. These kids can go there and be within 4 hours from home from almost any urban city in Texas and they grow up into the Longhorns like Nebraska kids are into the cornhuskers. When UT offers a Texas kid... it is almost impossible to pull that kid out of state to NU. Some kids go to OU because of its proximity to Texas and still prestigious program...but good luck pulling them all the way to NU. And I say all this as a Strong NU fan. I'm sick of UT and have had to live in Texas my whole life putting up with their crap and their fans..ugh. I heeard when Owa made his spreadsheet the size of the stadium's scoreboard was on the list. As for the pieces in bold (I do this because I hate it when people spit out numbers as fact without doing at least a little research) Lache Seastrunk Corey Nelson Jake Matthews Aaron Franklin Ahmad Dixon Ross Apo (reciever) Torrea Peterson ...which means about 24% of their in-state offers chose to go elsewhere. SAT: The exam consists of three parts: Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing. The scores from each section can range from 200 to 800, so the best possible total score is 2400. (1300 doesn't seem as impressive now does it?) Most schools take the reading/math composits when doing comparison. As for comparing Texas to Rice - here are the actual numbers. (25th/75th percentiles) Texas Reading - 530/670 Math - 570/690 Rice Reading - 650/750 Math - 670/780 So the bottom 25% of Rice is still almost smarter that the majority of UT. As for how NU stacks up against Texas? Almost identical, Texas edges nebraska by about 10-20 points. Not exactly significant. Texas brings in $87 million, Nebraska $55 million. $23 million shy of double. NU ranked #2 in 2008 football revenue in the Big 12. From a pure "value" perspective it's even closer. 1. Texas (second last season), $119 million team value, $59 million profit. 2007: $92 million team value, $46 million profit. 4. Nebraska (18th last season), $93 million team value, $49 million profit. you read that right, 18th - 4th in 1 year (without an appearance in the Big 12 Championship). Thank you Bo/TO. 2007: $49 million team value, $12 million profit. I think we are gaining just fine on Texas in the $$$ category. Seriously, you used a gay/lesbian opinion as an argument for why football players go to UT? I won't even get into this one. Since 1980 Texas has only been in the AP top 5, 7 times with 1 National Championship. NU, 9 times with 3 National Championship.
  25. He mentioned going to Texas's JD a few weeks ago here Texas has 2 JD's, the 13th and the 27th. He's on their list here but hasn't designated which date. Since the 13th is this weekend I'm guessing he would have already designated by now, so he'll probably go there the 27th instead of us. He was also just recently at Baylors JD. Ah, I didn't realize UT's JD conflicted with ours. Thanks! At least Green will attend our spring game. BTW, your first link didn't make sense. Did you mean to link to this? Sorry to keep posting, but EZ posted in the 2011 prospects board on the 8th a list that had Green going on the 13th. Not sure where his list came from, but maybe he is there this weekend which will leave the 27th open.
