  1. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-b...ov=ap&type=lgns I'm curious to see what the Broncos fans on here think. I haven't kept a close eye on the Broncos since Sewell "retired" but I doubt this is much of a shock...? IF it turns out to be true. There was an article in the Denver Post basically boasting after the draft that the Broncos were able to get a big-name player like Clarett at a pick in the 4th round where teams usually find the relative no-names, those "Day 2" caliber players. The example the writer gave was the player the Falcons chose with the same pick the year before: Demorrio Williams. Maybe I just took it personally being a Husker/Demorrio fan but the jist was basically that the Broncos got this Big Name player; while a year earlier the Falcons got a "Who??". even all these months later, I would LOVE to find that article again (a search was unsuccessful) and email the writer and let him know that *Demorrio Who?* might be a starter for the Falcons this year. While the amazing Maurice Clarett apparently won't even make the Broncos first round of cuts. Other semi-Husker related News from the NFL that might be of interest: >The Chicago Bears have named rookie QB Kyle Orton as their new starting quarterback for the start of the 2005 season. Orton of course is the near-Husker who wears #18 in honor of Brook. >The San Diego Chargers have announced the team released QB Craig Ochs. Former CU QB. >NFL.com reports the Jacksonville Jaguars have released WR Troy Edwards. This guy absolutely LIT UP the Blackshirts a few years ago. but hasn't quite caught on in the NFL. NFL teams don't have to cut down until Tuesday i think, but some have already started-. no Huskers have been cut-- YET.
  2. http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2005/0...ad417615267.txt The bit above reminded me of a thread on another board last April. Several posters argued that, b/c 3 Blackshirts were drafted in the top 40 picks of the NFL Draft, it was undeniable proof that the Defense was overflowing with talent, and Cosgrove's schemes were the only problem. not just a problem, but THE lone problem. and that Cosgrove should be fired b/c of it. Many of the same posters absolutely refused to entertain the idea (brought forth by rumors and later by actual quotes from the players) that some of these guys did not play to the best of their abilities and therefore the TEAM suffered. somehow I doubt articles even like this one will change their minds to at least be open to the possibility that Cosgrove was not the only problem last year- and that Bo Pelini is, in fact, not a god. Cosgrove may very well have had bad schemes, but how could we really tell when some of the players apparently weren't playing his actual schemes anyway? I admit I'm not the biggest Cosgrove fan, but I'm also willing to cut the guy a little slack and see what he can do beyond only one problem-plagued season.
  3. Any other Denver Post-subscribing Husker fans notice a name missing from the "Key Players" list at the 3A level? 30 "key players" are listed for each high school level, offensive and defensive linemen included, but there's no mention of Seth Jensen in 3A. though, he is listed among the "Players to watch" for Fort Morgan HS specifically. Though it is the Denver Post, I don't recall ever seeing their preps coverage short-change a recruit simply b/c he commited to NU- or anywhere else. so I assume this is an honest mistake, but it seems to be a pretty blatent one. http://denverpost.com/portlet/article/html...imageId=2978497
  4. I gotta give the writer credit for making a mostly positive article, as that can be pretty hard for the folks at the Denver Post. but the low-excitement thing is even more laughable when you consider the local team that that paper covers most in college football- the CU Buffs- had to go DOOR-TO-DOOR to sell season tickets. obviously Boulder is just flowing over with excitement after winning the North title last year. while us unexcited Husker fans can only manage to continue our sellout streak as we expand the capacity of our stadium. woe is us.
  5. it rhymed. that's probably about it.
  6. well that just makes it even dumber then doesn't it? so "real" college players have to learn to act by the time they get to the NFL..? no wonder they get paid so much. it must be a huge conspiracy in this guy's little head to imagine that, out of the thousands of NFL players there's ever been, none of them decided to let the secret out. oh, except for a couple covered-up trials. I wouldn't be surprised if Olympic Curling was fake though...
  7. expectations down? yes. Excitement? well i guess when only 63k show up for the spring game in the middle of April, its an obvious sign that excitement is at an all time low.
  8. for what its worth- an article from behind enemy lines-- http://www.denverpost.com/colleges/ci_2974249
  9. they were tracksters and backups (if that), etc but IMO its kind of unfair to question the "talent" in the league since these guys play for fun- not payment. Sort of like a backyard football league only with a little better athletes. FWIW, here's another NAFL player some of us should recognize: Jonathan Beasley, QB, Wichita Aviators. http://www.aviatorsfootball.com/roster.html i would have thought he'd at least be with an AF2 or an NIFL team or something. I forgot the Esks own the rights to Diedrick. thanks for bringing that up! it seems like he's never really shown interest in going to the CFL though. which is somewhat odd considering a) he's a fringe NFL player anyway, and B) He's Canadian! then he could sign as a non-import, right? I think he'd be great up there but if he's content with being a practice squad player in the NFL then, then more power to him. Crouch's CFL rights are "owned" by Toronto, who want him as a QB. but according to one article he said he'd be willing to play in the CFL- if they'd have him play Safety.
  10. AFL (could definately change before next season) --Steve Warren, FB/LB, San Jose SaberCats the 300+ pounder was used quite a bit as a fullback last season. scored a few Refridgerator-Perry-esque touchdowns last season. --Dan Alexander, FB/LB, Nashville Kats was cut in early April, even though he was in the top 3 in AFL rushing. Wasn't re-signed again until late May. but despite being teamless for much of the season he was still voted onto the AFL Rookie team. --David White, FB/LB - Tampa Bay Storm (maybe a free agent this offseason?) --Wilson Thomas, WR/LB, Arizona Rattlers he played last year but was only with the team for a short time before being released in March. AF2 (as of 2005) --Daren Williams, FB/LB, Green Bay Blizzard --Dan Vili Waldrop, OL/DL, Bakersfield Blitz NIFL (Lincoln Capitols) a couple of these names I don't recognize but the Cap's website says they went to NU --Derek Brown, Kareem Sears, Chris Loos, Garth Glissman, Phil Kniep, Seth Rexilious UIF --Damien Baumen, Omaha Beef --Dwayne Harris, Omaha Beef --Ted Retzlaff, Omaha Beef --Larry Henderson, Peoria Rough Riders - played in 2005 but he was not on their roster later in the season --Thunder Collins, Peoria Rough Riders - was said to have signed with an unamed NFL team but that apparently never materialized. one wonders if it was even true to begin with...?? non indoor but yet another football league out there: NAFL (players play w/out payment i think) even if these teams do have websites many of them don't post their rosters. the only name of note that I've come across from this last year was that of Octavious McFarlin who played with a club called the Kansas City Shockers. a few others i could find, going back to 2003: http://www.geocities.com/nflhuskers/otherl...ues/olnafl.html
  11. I thought the same thing about Craver, Cub! I thought the CFL had drug tests but if they don't- then its a perfect place for Keyuo! He was suspended at least 2 if not three times for lighting up while with the Saints. Kabongo is a monster and he's fun to watch even if he's just standing there. obviously he has great size but was very raw when he was here. if i recall, he hadn't played football that long before he came to the Huskers. I WAS rooting for the Als since they signed Barron Miles but he's now with BC, and the Alouettes apparently cut Dave Volk a while back, so I won't be rooting for them anymore. The Esks are a good team to root for though (in terms of former Huskers). 2 Huskers last year (Demoine Adams and Kabongo) and 2 again this year (Kabongo/Craver). BTW, another former Husker in the CFL is Chuck Tack (Who?!). He's a kicker on the practice squad for the Hamilton Ti-Cats: http://www.ticats.ca/index.php?module=Rost...display&tid=130 A few websites found on Google contradict with most of the profile linked above. For one, it says he "Spent two seasons (1997-98) with the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers"... but the only thing i could find on him said he was a walkon in 1998 and 1999. He never earned a letter but i did come across a spring game roster that had him listed. "graduated from Nebraska with a degree in civil engineering" A UNO related site said he graduated from there with a degre in civil eng. though he apparently never played football for the Mavs. who knows which is accurate??-- anyone even remember this guy?!
  12. really, well alright then, i apologize to Mr. Brownbly for sort of making fun of his name in any case (no pun intended) i'll have to look those up sometime when i'm really curious... and really bored. you do have to admit though, it is really amazing how they fixed the mizzou game in 1997. i mean, these acting "football players" sometimes only get one shot on live TV and if Davison hadn't made that fake catch- there coulda been some hell to pay from the people that design the outcome of each game! and that famous Cal vs Stanford ending-- what creative genious designed that one?! man they just don't make 'em like they used to.
  13. oh good, another whiney wet blanket with a constant cranky attitude. A few more of these and this board will look like Huskerpedia's BBS. good call! Husker fans were certainly amused but the few CU fans that were within earshot only had groans of "oooh, damn!" and comments of a "bad omen". deep down they knew they were going to lose that day when it was all said and done.
  14. and here we are with an editorial, as expected, blaming Osborne. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/s...-phillips_x.htm Check out this last bit and you'll get an idea of the stupidity of the writer oh that's right, TO was wrong for playing LP in the Orange Bowl in 1994- LP should have been suspended in anticipation for what he did months after that game and for breaking laws now ten years later. AND, a common mistake of TO haters, the idea that the 1995 Huskers even needed LP to win the championship that year. apparently its also TO's fault that LP is still a criminal, no blame of that type goes to the NFL and CFL teams gave him a plethora of chances, no blame goes to the society itself that won't just lock this guy up for good. it's all TO's doing. all he had to do, was kick LP off the team TEN YEARS AGO and today, LP would be a perfect, law abiding citizen. do these idiots never quit?
  15. Give the NCAA some slack Denver and everyone else. they were very busy clearing those offensive native american-hating FSU Seminoles off their little lawyer-created blacklist. and you want National COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC Association to worry about something completely trivial like COLLEGE ATHLETES getting to practice and classes?? lay off, people! i just say its a good thing the NCAA has its priorities straight unlike us unappriciative college football fans.
  16. so what he's really saying is his least talented team was the one John Blake recruited for him. but he hasn't been able to win with his own "more talented" recruits since?
  17. The option isn't what made them great. If that were true, every team in the nation would run it. more teams should run it imo. Passing=turnovers. and the option/running the ball doesn't create turnovers?! 1999 Huskers ran the option, but TURNOVERS was what kept us from playing FSU in the champtionship that year. or the 1996 game vs ASU per a recent thread. mistakes in running the option lead to several turnovers. when the option is executed well, you can limit turnovers... gee, that sounds just like every offense, including the evil passing ones. while I very much disagree with those that say the option no longer has a place in college football, our option offenses nonetheless, saw a major dropoff. Like most systems, the option needs players and the right coaches to run it. and unfortunatly, we had too many missing pieces in the last few years. that 1995 team though, simply had no weaknesses. not even two-deep on the depth chart. I recall the sentiments in the newspapers after the Pacific game. NU only won by something like 70-21..? but that was a disapointment- the Huskers let up and went easy on 'em.
  18. the fact that he picked on our Bball team is funny enough. I would expect Maine fans to be a little less talkative but some of them may be thinking "wait for hockey!" i said it before and i'll say it again, we may have the upper hand in football but Maine would kick our @$$ on the ice.
  19. everytime the subject of CU's power scheduling or their lack of attendence comes up (the two are VERY much related)- i'm always reminded of this quote from Barney: What NU has with fans selling out every game IS special, and he's right, not every school has that luxery. But while NU may be above average in that respect, CU is undoubtably well below what should be expected from a program at that level. -Only a 50k stadium? -North Division title the previous year -At least decent expectations this year and on top of that, the CSU game is a rivalry- and yet they still have 6,500 seats left?! there is no excuse for the lack of attendence IMO. oh wait, i guess there is one. an unfortunately large bulk of their fanbase/students aren't worth $4it for fan support apparently.
  20. obviously i ranted above about this "former Husker" headline crap. but for the most part i have actually been surprised that the coverage of this is, by far, MOSTLY "former NFL player...". Is it b/c we're on the down right now that "Former Nebraska player" is just not as appealing for the media?? b/c it sure used to be. the fact that it was the NFL, not Nebraska, that gave Phillips multiple chances was apparently lost on much of the media. Take this for example: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/l...rattackinlapark Straight forward recanting of part of LP's infamous history, but... No mention of "only suspended for 8 games before returning to become an undeniably important part of the Huskers win over the Florida Gators in the National Championship"; Not even a mention of Coach Osborne or a rehash of alledged crimes from the 1995 team. These types of things have almost always accompanied such articles on Phillips from the past ten years. But here, amazingly, the only mention of NU's response is something positive- that they gave the victim protection! Wha?! who would have thought our football team being on a downturn would have any kind of remote positives?! Of course, these are all technical type reports and not editorials. we may still get an editorial from the Boston Globe alledging that LP had been hiding out at Osborne's place. then after the incident he tried to help LP hide the stolen car, along with Tyrone Williams' gun. Later, after BSing police as to Phillips' whearabouts, TO offered a tipsy Eric Warfield another beer and the keys to LPs stolen car.
  21. well apparently there aren't any Gators on the LA squad 'cause they caught him-- after he tried to run over some teenagers (hey, you know how kids get sometimes): The latest, just when you thought it couldn't get more pathetic: http://www.yesnetwork.com/ap.asp?ap_story_...9374&is_local=0 Check out this list: --earlier this month: allegedly attacked his girlfriend twice, once choking her into unconsciousness. --a different assault allegedly took place 11 days later when Phillips confronted the woman at a party. --also wanted on an outstanding felony warrant from Los Angeles for an unrelated domestic violence case. --allegedly ran his car into three teenagers who argued with him during a pickup football game --The car Phillips was driving was reported stolen in San Diego earlier in the week WOW! Don't drop the soap LP! Of course, if any trial is held in LA, he could plead "But I'm A Celebrity" and would probably get off.
  22. prOOved, huh? since when are trials, which tend to be public in this country, "not leaked a lot"? Were these military trials or something? and where the heck is colorade anyway? is that one of our territories? it must be next to G'tmo, as that might explain the need for a secret non-leaked a lot military case. and what kind of BS name is "Brownbly"? is that Dutch? as a teacher of mine once said, "some people still truly believe the earth is flat". and as my bumper sticker says "Stupid People Shouldn't Breed". obviously somebody did, and this kind thing is what you get.
  23. in 1999 I walking to the stadium and there were a few KSU fans walking in front of us. One of them had a hat on that read "Kansas State Football: A Winning Tradition". this one doesn't really follow the above rules but it is from a Husker gameday, and it was funny. We were at a game in Boulder (also in 1999 i think) and had seats across from the visitor section. technically the section is for Buff fans but Husker fans had pretty much taken it over. during the game the CU cheerleaders are going to each area around the field (except for the visitor sections of course) doing several of their little cheers each time and getting a pretty good response from the CU crowd. Then they come to our section, but this crowd, instead of yelling back "GO C-U" on the cue, yells back "GO BIG RED". The normally smiley cheerleaders look obviously anoid and then move on to the next section after only one cheer.
  24. well now, they haven't caught him yet. the 8x8 cell comes after they finally catch LP, we can only hope the SDPD can tackle better than the '95 Gators...
