Former Husker tight end Alford sentenced for child sexual assault

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Former Husker football player Eric Alford was sentenced Thursday to 15 to 20 years in prison in a child sexual assault case.

Alford, 34, of Lincoln, pleaded no contest in May to charges of attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child.

In a plea deal, charges were reduced from first-degree sexual assault of a child, and Alford's maximum potential prison sentence reduced from 50 years to 20 years.

Alford was arrested in February when a 12-year-old girl told child welfare workers he had had a four-year sexual relationship with her.

The girl said the contact began as fondling in 2003 and developed into sexual intercourse about two years ago, according to Lancaster County District Court records.

Alford played tight end for Nebraska in 1993 and 1994.
