CU players Suspended

BOULDER – Three University of Colorado football players have been suspended for varying lengths but will be allowed to practice when the Buffaloes open preseason camp on Monday.

The three players, all from the defense, are sophomore inside linebacker Michael Sipili and sophomore defensive tackles Chris Perri and Taj Kaynor.

Sipili, who started two games last season and was to have begun practice this season No. 1 at his position, was suspended indefinitely while Perri, a transfer from Laney (Calif.) College, will miss three games and Kaynor one.

All of the suspensions, confirmed Saturday by CU director of athletic media relations Dave Plati, were levied by coach Dan Hawkins after the players allegedly were involved in fighting during the summer.

Hawkins said last month there would be "some repercussions’’ from a Fourth of July fighting incident involving Kaynor and Perri.

According to a Boulder police report, both players had been drinking, with Kaynor, 21, ticketed for brawling and Perri, 20, arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault. The incident occurred outside a home in Boulder, the report said.

Also, Perri apparently was involved in the same June incident that landed Sipili, 19, in trouble. According to Boulder police, Sipili and Perri fought with another pair of men early on June 16 after Perri allegedly made an offensive remark to one of three women.

That prompted a confrontation between the 6-fooot-4, 275-pound Perri and one of the men. Sipili, 6-1 and 250, came to Perri’s aid and is accused of tackling and punching John Antrim, a 22-year-old CU student.

The police report said Antrim required surgery in late June for three facial fractures.

Sipili is out of jail on bond after being arrested Wednesday on suspicion of criminal mischief and second-degree assault.

His indefinite suspension leaves the Buffs thin at the "mike" inside linebacker position. Listed behind him on the most recent depth chart are junior R.J. Brown and sophomore Jake Duren.
