Fran To Step Down Rumor:

I caught the tail end of a conversation on one of the local sports talk radio stations and rumor has it he got busted doing something illegally with A&M money. Not exactly sure what it was but they kept talking about gambling or something. I haven't heard anything else since.

That must be referring to the $1200 'insider' newsletter, where about a dozen Aggie alums had access to injury reports et al.....

See the following articles (1st one is brief, and the 2nd one is long):

The Aggie boards were buzzing all day today about a rumor that a press conference was being called this afternoon to announce Fran's resignation. No press conference was ever called; however, AD "Dollar" Bill Byrne was out of town. A radio station in Oklahoma reported this evening that a presser was being called for tomorrow. No official word regarding anything has come out of A&M yet.

Information on the $1200 newsletter can be found here:

In addition to the injury reports, there were also updates about recruits...a big no-no as far as the NCAA is concerned. Aggies were already unhappy with Fran and the general consensus was that he was out at the end of the season. Texas A&M would be stuck with paying out the remainder of his contract through 2012, at $142,000 per month.

However, his contract states that he can be terminated for NCAA violations. The newsletter may give the Aggies the ability to fire Fran without being stuck with the buyout.

Fran is an idiot for getting into this mess. He has been coaching a long time, and he knew better.

Thanks for the info. I just happened to catch the tail end of that conversation w/Dean Blevins and ole Pat 'whats-his-name' (former Okie St coach) and they were talking about this. Pat said his source (who he claimed is reasonably reliable) told him something was going to happen with Fran. They did say though this could give A&M an out to have to buy-out Fran's contract. Alabama was pissed when he left the way he did. I'm guessing in hind-sight, they're thanking their lucky stars right now.

Fran just read a prepared statement at the weekly Aggie media luncheon. A few quotes:

"I have no intention of resigning this job."

"I will not discuss this matter any further."

"That's it. No more about it. The players are the only thing that matters to me in this thing. Time to move on."

Lots of players in attendance at the press conference today, they gave him a standing O as a show of support. He was near tears at times.

The press conference is still going on, now taking questions from the media, general questions about upcoming game, the Big 12 South, etc.

Looks like the Aggies will ride out the season with Fran.

Thanks for the news & updates. I'm very curious to see what this is all about. I know he was always on the hot seat as the coach, but after they beat UT last year things cooled down. If it's an illegal or NCAA problem, then they'll use it as the excuse. No matter what, the biggest question is - Against Miami, why did they run Javorskie Lane only TWO times? Crazy...
