Coaches earned bonus for sharing Big 12 North

Little did Bo Pelini know that a Kansas victory in the snow over Missouri late last November was worth $50,000 to him.

That outcome caused a tie atop the Big 12 North standings between Missouri and Nebraska, and that tie caused NU administrators to revise the language regarding bonuses for Pelini and his assistant coaches.

Though Missouri held the tiebreaker and Nebraska did not play in the Big 12 championship game, Pelini received a $50,000 bonus for tying for the North title, and his assistants received a bonus of 1/24th of their base salaries (a total of $68,750).

Steven M. Sipple and Brian Christopherson discuss Bo Pelini's new contract, a 68 percent bump in pay that brings his yearly salary to $1.851 million. ...

There had been no mention in the coaches’ original contracts about a bonus for such a tie, only a bonus for appearing in the Big 12 championship game. But the standings brought forth a change of language that has been included in all the coaches’ contracts.

Of course, Pelini is aiming higher than simply tying for the North. And there are bonuses involved with that pursuit.

If Pelini’s team plays in the Big 12 championship game, he would receive a $150,000 bonus. He would receive an additional $100,000 if Nebraska were to win that game.

Bowl game appearances provide additional bonus opportunities for Pelini and his assistants.

Pelini would gain $100,000 for an appearance in any bowl game; or $150,000 for an appearance in the BCS national championship game; or $250,000 for winning the BCS national championship.

As for the assistants, all have contracts that stipulate they would gain an additional 1/12th of their current salary for making a non-BCS bowl game; or a bonus of 1/6th of their salary for making a BCS bowl game; or a bonus of 1/4th of their salary for a national championship.

The Journal Star reviewed all of the football coaches’ contracts on Tuesday.

Pelini’s new deal, which was signed March 9, includes a buyout clause where Pelini would owe NU $750,000 were he to leave for another job this year. In 2010, the buyout drops to $500,000, and in 2011 and beyond, it’s $250,000.

Nebraska’s obligation to Pelini were he to be fired is $750,000 a year, less whatever he would earn from a subsequent position through the term of the five-year contract.

The contracts for Nebraska’s assistants run through January 2010.
