Two car rental employees helped lead Birmingham vice and narcotics officers to seize more than 100 pounds of marijuana Monday and arrest one suspect.

 

Two rental agents from Enterprise Rent-A-Car on Monday tracked down a 2005 Ford Taurus that was leased in March but never returned, said Birmingham police Lt. James Chambliss.

 

The workers went to the 100 block of Thomas Street in western Birmingham, where they found the parked car and reclaimed it, Chambliss said.

 

As they were driving off, the man who had rented the car came out of the house and started to run toward them.

 

"They were afraid and kept going," Chambliss said.

 

Once back at the office on West Park Drive, the workers discovered 111 pounds of marijuana - valued at $150,000- in the back seat, packaged for sale by the pound.

 

They called police and turned over the drugs to narcotics officers.

 

As if that wasn't easy enough, police again got a break when the suspect later Monday afternoon showed up at Enterprise Rent-A-Car to pick up what he described as his personal belongings.

 

Again workers called police, and the 34-year-old suspect was taken into custody. His name was withheld pending formal charges.

 

"Idiots: That's what works for us," Chambliss said.
