1995 NU volleyball team to be honored before scrimmage

Lincoln The Nebraska volleyball program will honor the 10th anniversary of the program's first national title as the members of the 1995 Huskers will be honored at the Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Nearly the entire 1995 team and coaching staff will be back at the Nebraska Coliseum to be honored during next Saturday for the event and team reception.

Under the guidance of Terry Pettit, the Huskers went 32-1, including a 31-match winning streak to end the season. They won 28 of their 32 matches by 3-0 scores, including 22 straight sweeps during one stretch. After defeating UCLA and Penn State to advance to the national semifinals, the Huskers downed fourth-ranked Michigan State, 3-2, before bringing home the school's first national volleyball title with a 3-1 victory over Texas.

While the squad, featured a trio of three first-team All-Americans in Allison Weston, Christy Johnson and Lisa Reitsma, current Husker volleyball coach John Cook said it was that team's ability to play as one unit and single-minded focus toward its goal that made it such a memorable team.

"The 1995 team went through a heart-breaking loss in the 1994 regional in the Coliseum, and then had the ability to use that motivation to come back and be a great team and push themselves to the level where they could win a national championship," said Cook, whose Wisconsin team lost 3-0 to the Huskers that season. "The thing that team had was great chemistry."

Homegrown heroes such as Omaha natives Weston and Johnson were the inspiration for girls around the state, including current Husker setter Dani Busboom, who recalled coming to many of the matches at the Coliseum as a youngster.

Tickets are still available for next Saturday's scrimmage, the first opportunity to see the No. 1 Huskers in action. Prices are $6 (adults) and $4 (children and seniors) with all seating as general admission. The Nebraska Coliseum doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
