Hawks center Jason Collier dies suddenly

TORONTO (Reuters) - Atlanta Hawks center Jason Collier died suddenly in his sleep early on Saturday.

The five-year NBA veteran was just 28.

While initial reports indicated Collier had died of an apparent heart attack the team said later that the cause of death was not immediately known.

"Jason and his family are first and foremost in our prayers during this difficult time," said Hawks Executive vice president and general manager Billy Knight, in a statement.

"Jason was a devoted family man who deeply loved his wife Katie, daughter Elezan (Ella), his parents and siblings.

"He was also a tremendous friend to the Hawks employees who spent time with him, and a hard-working and dedicated team mate to many NBA players over his five seasons in the league.

"We will truly miss Jason's personality and his spirit, and he will be in the thoughts and minds of our team and organization forever."

The Atlanta Constitution Journal said Collier experienced trouble breathing at 0230 local time on Saturday and his wife performed CPR and called 911.

The seven-foot center was rushed to Northside Hospital in Forsyth County, where he was pronounced dead.

The team canceled a scheduled morning practice and informed the players of Collier's death.

He had spent the last two seasons with the Hawks after playing his first three years in the NBA with the Houston Rockets.

The Hawks are scheduled to play an exhibition game on Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
