War with Syria (and/or Pakistan)?

Recommended Posts

Will the potential Syrian conflict remain a war of threats like Iran, or will it turn into a real invasion like Libya?

Nuclear aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush has reportedly anchored off Syria. As an Arab League deadline to allow observers into the country passes with no response from Damascus, the possibility of intervention in Syria seems to be growing.

Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Western nations of "political provocation" by urging the Syrian opposition to refuse to negotiate a settlement with Assad.

There are a lot of questions I have about Syria when it comes to the US getting involved in an armed conflict that I don't have the answers.

Does the US want to get into another tussle with Russia right now with a country that is supplied with Russian arms?

Does Syria have an organized and armed opposition similar to Libya that is big enough and could do all the dirty work on the ground if the US supplied the air support?

Does Obama want to start another conflict this close to an election where the conflict itself would probably not be supported by voters?

Do other major western powers such as the UK and France support the opposition in Syria as much as they did in Libya? At least so far it doesn't seem that you hear as much about it right now like you did with Libya, other then the condemnation of violence.

If Russia wants to be the leader in the Syrian conflict and keep other nations out of it, maybe the US should let Russia. Then when more violence and deaths occur, start blaming Russia for not doing more.

It will be interesting to watch what happens next.

The US, EU and our Arab League allies want a pro-west government in Syria, and nothing else will do.

Russia does not want that, so from the start we are at odds with them.

The current conflict in Syria is nothing more than a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis had initiated the conflict, the blood is on their hands.

Only in the west... where the delivery of humanitarian aid is the pretext to an undeclared declaration of war.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the plan fell short of a military intervention but acknowledged that humanitarian convoys might need armed protection.

Pakistan state TV reported that 25 soldiers were killed late last night in an alleged Nato helicopter attack on a Pakistani army checkpoint near the Afghan border. The Pakistan military has blamed Nato helicopters for the attack on the checkpoint in the Mohmand tribal area and a key Afghan border crossing was later closed to Nato supplies in retaliation for the strike. A customs official said that he received verbal orders to stop all Nato supplies from moving across the border through the Torkham crossing.

And we're also going after Russia...

Russia’s President Medvedev sent a sharp warning this week to Western powers over the planned NATO missile shield in Europe. He said if the plans go ahead without guarantees of Russia's safety, Moscow would deploy missiles of its own. Years of negotiations over the proposed shield, which America wants to place in Turkey and in former Warsaw Pact countries on Russia’s western border, have been deadlocked over the US refusal to agree to Russian participation in the project. America says the anti-missile shield is aimed at protecting Europe from so-called rogue states like North Korea and Iran, but Russia sees it as a threat to its own national security. Russia says the US has still not given adequate assurances over who will be targeted, prompting stern words from President Dmitry Medvedev and a pledge that Moscow will deploy its own state-of-the-art missiles on Europe’s eastern flank.

For that matter, let's just invade EVERYONE

Darn neoconservative foreign policy... I mean liberal Obama foreign policy!

The truth is, there is no real difference between Democrat and republican foreign policy, or financial policy.

We need more and better party/candidate options.

We are getting closer to a major war... World War III. Russia is arming Syria to the hilt.

Twenty-four hours before the Arab League Sunday, Nov. 27, clamped down sanctions on the Assad regime, the first ever against a member state, the armies of Syria's seven neighbors were already scrambling into position on standby on its borders for acts of retaliation. Military suspense mounted after the Arab League vote to cut off transactions with Syria's central bank, withdraw Arab funding from projects and other painful sanctions over Bashar Assad's refusal to halt his crackdown on protest.

debkafile's military sources report Israeli armored brigades pushed forward up to the Lebanese and Syrian borders; Ankara placed three armored brigades, its air force and navy in astate of preparedness, likewise Hizballah and the Lebanese and Jordanian armed forces, while the US and Russia are in the midst of a naval buildup opposite Syrian shores.

Military sources in the Gulf report that 150 Iranian Revolutionary Guards specialists had landed at a military airport south of Damascus on their way to Lebanon to join Hizballah which began bringing its rockets out of their hideouts.

Ahead of the Arab League vote, Qatar and Turkey were reported to be airlifting "volunteers" from Libya to fight alongside the rebel Free Syrian Army, some also transporting weapons, whereas Russia has begun another airlift to deliver top-notch missiles for Assad's forces.

Our sources report the two key items are advanced Pantsir-1 (SA-22 Greyhound) anti-air missiles for breaking a no-fly zone against most types of aircraft should one be imposed and supersonic Yakhont (SS-26) missiles for targeting vessels blockading Syria's shores at a distance of 300 kilometers.

What I am trying to figure out is what is Russia's motive to get involved with Syria other then selling some arms? To get a foothold in the Mediterranean or the Middle East? Oil? I didn't think they were that significant of an exporter. Doing a favor for Iran? The US always gets involved with stuff for "democracy" or "human rights" but we know most of the reason is economic. I just can't figure why Russia wants to be in the middle of this.

I'll say it...because they're dicks.

Perhaps they are tiring of this latest cycle of encirclement.

When NATO invaded Libya in part for it oil fields, Russia was for the most part cut out of the bounty.
