carlfense
From Sullivan's blog. Interesting read. Talking about the traditional meaning of liberalism of course. http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/04/can-liberalism-survive.html Link to comment
bhamHusker
Interesting read. I might comment on more on it later, but I lack the time atm. For now, lets clarify the term because there are some that, based on their posting history, will not understand what liberalism in this context means. By "Liberalism," Andrew Sullivan is referring to free, democratic societies such as virtually every modern western democracy as opposed to monarchies and other totalitarian forms of governance. He is not referring to "durned freedum hating libs wanna take muh guns and make me worship Charles Darwin and Karl Marx, and force muh women to have abortions, and turn me gay!" http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Liberalism Link to comment
Omaha-Husker
Sort of reminds me of the often talked about "Lifecycle of Democracy." From bondage to spiritual faith From spiritual faith to great courage From courage to liberty From liberty to abundance From abundance to complacency From complacency to apathy From apathy to dependence From dependence back into bondage Link to comment
strigori
When you get down to it, Liberalism is the only thing that can survive. It is the only form of government that transcends individuals. Change is a fundamental part of the system, with leaders being elected on terms, not in for life, or someone else who has bigger guns. But in the event of the zombie apocalypse this all goes out the window.... Link to comment
