Perhaps Compton or whoever he was signaling in calls to had poor eyesight. When I was a catcher in HS baseball, we had a pitcher who's eyes were so bad he couldn't see my fingers. I faked giving signals then either used and open hand or a fist to call the pitch. Quote Link to comment

The purpose of the tape is so that the players can see his fingers easier on sideline play calls and adjustments. Maybe they are just getting better with the calls where they don't need it.
