Ya it sucks we lost, but it was a close game. We proved we can put up hits against a great pitcher. Joba also had a 10 K game. I know it sucks, but they are rated i believe 2nd or 3rd and we hung tough. We just couldn't get the runs across. With the youth and inexperience at some of our positions i am not too upset.

But ya....sucks to lose a close one to a team like rice.

Huskers Swing Past Red Storm

Houston, Texas – The third-ranked Nebraska baseball team erupted for season highs in both hits (18) and runs (12) in posting a 12-4 victory over St. John’s Sunday afternoon at the Rice Invitational at Reckling Park.

The Huskers, who improved to 5-2 on the season, received three-hit days from Nick Jaros and Jake Opitz, as NU jumped out to a 6-1 lead and broke the game open with a four-run fifth after St. John’s pulled to within 6-4.

In all, every starter had at least one hit in the victory, as NU rebounded from the one-run loss to No. 4 Rice on Saturday. Bryce Nimmo drove in three runs, while Jeff Christy and Luke Gorsett each homered and drove in two runs apiece.

NU Head Coach Mike Anderson was pleased with the offensive production, especially early on against the Red Storm, who reached a regional title game a year ago.

“The key for us today was that we were able to put innings together,” Anderson said. “After last night, we swung the bat well and put together some competitive at-bats and cut down out strikeouts. Those are the things we need to play at a championship level.”

The outburst was more than enough for Husker starter Johnny Dorn, who went the first five frames to pick up his first win of the season. Dorn, who improved to 1-1 on the year, allowed three earned on six hits while striking out three without a walk.

“I thought Johnny did a great job out there today,” Anderson said. “After the homer, he settled down and kept them off balance the rest of the day. Even when they scored their runs, it was a matter of our defense breaking down more than him not making the pitches he needed to make. Johnny’s outing was very encouraging today.”

The teams traded runs in the first inning, as Nebraska got an RBI double from Ryan Wehle in the top of the frame before St. John’s got a leadoff homer from Will Vogl to knot the score at one.

The Huskers exploded for three runs in the second to push the margin to 4-1. After Christy was hit by a pitch with one out, NU strung together four straight hits, including an RBI double by Mort and a two-run single by Nimmo to give NU a three-run cushion. Nebraska then proceeded to load the bases with one out, but SJU starter Luis Monell got out of the jam.

Nebraska knocked the Red Strorm left-hander out of the game in the third, as the Huskers added two more runs to make it 6-1. With one out, Christy lofted a solo blast to left, his second round tripper of the season. Mort then singled, stole second and came home on Nimmo’s second hit of the day, an RBI double to center, to give the Huskers a five-run cushion.

Monell allowed six runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings of work to take the loss.

Dorn settled down, retiring nine straight until the Red Storm rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, St. John’s strung together three straight hits, including an RBI single by Chris Joachim and a run-scoring double by Sam Deluca, before the Husker right-hander balked in the third run of the frame.

The Huskers put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring four times to take a 10-4 advantage. NU opened the frame with four straight hits, including RBI singles by Christy and Mort to make it 8-4. After a balk plated another run, Jaros gave NU a six-run lead with an RBI double to right.

The Huskers tacked on its final two runs in the eighth on Gorsett’s two-run homer to deep left, his team-leading third homer of the season. The Husker bullpen shined once again, holding the Red Storm, which dropped to 1-3, off the board the rest of the day.

The Huskers return to action on Friday afternoon, as they begin play at the Dairy Queen Classic in the Metrodome against nationally ranked Notre Dame. First pitch is set for 12:15 p.m. and the game will be carried on selected Pinnacle Sports Network stations and on the Internet at Huskers.com.
