If you're unranked and you just keep winning, you will be ranked accordingly. Possibly even get hyped for being a sleeper.

 

If you are highly ranked and lose a clunker, you will be punished accordingly. Possibly even mocked for being overrated.

 

If you lose only one game, better to do it early than late.

 

Given the conference championship games and four team playoffs, I don't see early season rankings determining squat.

 

But you need them anyway, just because.
