No. 4 Huskers Host Texas Tech this Weekend

The red-hot Nebraska baseball team returns to conference play this weekend, as the Huskers host Texas Tech for a three-game series at Hawks Field. Action on the diamond commences Friday with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch before weekend games scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on Saturday and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday.

General admission tickets are available for all three weekend contests for as little as $5 and can be purchased by calling the NU Ticket Office at (800) 8-BIGRED or at the Hawks Field Ticket Office beginning 90 minutes before each home game.

The entire weekend series will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, a 20-station network that includes KFAB 1110 AM in Omaha, 1400 AM in Lincoln and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington, along with an Internet broadcast at Huskers.com. Saturday and Sunday’s games will also be carried on SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Ch. 155), as a total of 15 regular-season games will be carried on SIRIUS.

Friday’s opener will be the fifth of six regular-season games produced by Cox Communications and will be shown across the state of Nebraska on Cox Cable in Omaha (Ch. 3), Time Warner Cable in Lincoln (Ch. 77) and Charter Media (check local listings) with Greg Sharpe, Paul Meyers and Kyle Peterson calling all of the action.

Nebraska is ranked in the top five all of the college baseball polls this week and will look to extend its streak of Big 12 series wins to 12 in a row. The Huskers (33-6, 12-3 Big 12) have won 15 of their last 16 games and have the nation’s best winning percentage following Tuesday’s 11-0 whitewash of Wichita State. In that game, Jon Klausing took a no-hitter into the seventh, while Brandon Buckman drove in four runs, including a two-run double in the first, to pace NU’s offensive attack.

Texas Tech (27-17-1, 6-10-1 Big 12) comes to town looking to bounce back after being swept by Oklahoma at home last weekend. The Red Raiders posted a midweek win over New Mexico on Tuesday and bring the Big 12’s top hitting club to town, hitting .324 as a squad. The Huskers will challenge with the league’s top pitching staff, boasting a 2.94 team ERA, and an offense which is third in the league with a .322 average.

Haymarket Park will be busy over the weekend, as both the Husker baseball and softball teams are in action in Big 12 series. The Husker softball team hosts nationally ranked Texas A&M for a two-game weekend series.

Leading Off

•-Nebraska’s .846 winning percentage is the best in the country heading into this weekend’s action, as only three schools in the country have an .800 winning percentage.

Best Division I Winning Percentage

Year Season Record Winning Pct.

1. Nebraska 33-6 .846

2. North Carolina 36-8 .818

3. Old Dominion 35-8 .814

4. Rice 35-9 .796

5. Notre Dame 33-9 .785

•-Nebraska has gotten off to fast starts, outscoring its opponents 44-8 in the first inning of games this season. In fact, NU has scored at least one run in the first inning of 17 of its last 25 contests.

•-Nebraska’s consecutive shutouts of Texas and Wichita State this week marked the first time ever that any school had posted consecutive shutouts against the college baseball’s two winningest coaches (Texas’ Augie Garrido and Wichita State’s Gene Stephenson). Nebraska will attempt to go for the hat trick on Friday evening when Texas Tech comes to town, as Larry Hays ranks third on the NCAA wins list.

•-After Tuesday’s win over Wichita State, NU is now as high as fifth in the latest simulated RPI (warrennolan.com and in Boydsworld.com). NU is 21-4 against teams rated in the top 100 of the RPI. As a league, the Big 12 is third in the RPI, as all 10 members are ranked in the top 75 nationally.

•-NU is off to one of its best starts in school history, as its 33-6 record is the second-best start after 39 games in school history, a game ahead of last season’s team that won a school-record 57 games. That fact is more impressive since NU has played one of the most difficult preconference schedules in school history.

Individually, Luke Gorsett ranks among the national leaders in homers per game (13th) and slugging percentage (15th). Other Huskers ranked in the top-20 nationally include Brandon Buckman, who is 19th in homers per game, and Brett Jensen, who is 19th nationally in saves..

•-Nebraska and Cal State Fullerton are the only two schools in the country to rank in the top 10 in both ERA and fielding percentage.

•-Nebraska has committed one error or less in 31 of its first 39 contests, including 13 games without an error.

•-One of NU’s keys to success is the ability to run while shutting down other team’s running games. NU is second in the Big 12 with 68 stolen bases, including 22-of-29 in Big 12 play, and has allowed just 22 stolen bases, a total that is second in the Big 12.

•-While NU’s pitching has been as good as advertised for most of the 2006 campaign, NU’s offensive numbers have been among the Big 12 leaders in most categories. The Huskers’ .323 team average is on pace for NU’s best team average since the 2001 CWS team hit .334.

•- The Huskers are 11-2 in games decided by two runs or less this season.

•-Nebraska has already sold out all the reserved and club seats at Hawks Field for the 2006 season. NU ranked sixth nationally in average attendance, averaging a school-record 4,984 fans per game in 2005. The Huskers are averaging 4,249 fans per game this spring, including four of the 20 largest crowds in school history.

•-Nebraska is one of only three teams in the country that returned two pitchers who won at least 10 games in 2005 (Oregon State and Miami of Ohio are the others).

•-Nebraska is one of only seven teams in all of Division I baseball to post team ERAs below 4.00 over the last four years, joining Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Oral Roberts, Rice, Texas and Wichita State. The Huskers were second nationally with a 2.69 team ERA in 2005.

•-Nebraska is one of only six programs nationally to reach the College World Series in three of the past five seasons, joining Cal State Fullerton, Miami, South Carolina, Stanford and Texas. The Big 12 is the only league with more than one team in that group.

•- Nebraska has scored at least one run in each of its last 170 games dating back to the start of the 2004 campaign. The streak is the longest in the Big 12, while NU has scored in 501 of the last 502 games dating back to the 1998 season.

•-Junior right fielder Luke Gorsett saw his 19-game hit streak dating back to March 25 snapped against Wichita State on Tuesday. His hit streak was the longest in the Big 12 in 2006 and tied for the ninth longest in school history.

Last Time Out

Tuesday (NU 11, Wichita State 0): Jon Klausing allowed one hit over seven shutout innings, leading NU to an 11-0 victory over Wichita State Tuesday. Klausing retired the first 14 hitters he faced and allowing only one ball out of the infield over his first six no-hit innings. He had retired 23 straight batters over two outings before Tyler Hill reached on a fielding error with two outs in the fifth. Klausing didn’t allow a hit until Derek Schermerhorn smacked a one-out single through the infield in the seventh. Brandon Buckman had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Christy and Wehrle also had two hits apiece in the win.

Scouting Texas Tech

Larry Hays’ Red Raiders come to Lincoln with a 27-17-1 record following a 6-4 win over New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon. Texas Tech looks to rebound after dropping its last three Big 12 series to dip to eighth place in the conference standings, a half game behind Missouri. Tech has been tough on teams in the league, splitting two games with Texas and winning a series against nationally ranked Baylor The Red Raiders were ranked earlier this month, but have since fallen from the rankings

Offensively, the Red Raiders are paced by freshman Roger Keischnick, who is hitting .369 with seven homers and 50 RBIs, ranking among the Big 12 leaders in RBIs. He is one of seven everyday starters hitting above .300 for a team that leads the Big 12 in hitting. The team was dealt a setback with catcher Matt Smith, who was hitting .376 with seven homers and 41 RBIs, was injured against KSU.

The Red Raiders feature one of the top newcomers in the Big 12 in freshman right-hander Miles Morgan, who is 5-5 with a 3.79 ERA, fanning 90 hitters over 80.2 innings of work.

Nebraska holds an 18-15 lead in the all-time series, including winning 3-of-5 games in 2005. The Huskers won the regular-season series, 2-1, in Lubbock and split two meetings at the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. NU ended the Red Raiders’ 2005 campaign with a 2-1 victory in the Big 12 Tournament as Johnny Dorn pitched a complete game.

NU Sports Information

Sophomore shortstop Ryan Wehrle smashed three hits, including a two-run homer and a three-run double on his way to a six-RBI day to help the No. 4 Nebraska baseball team complete a three-game sweep of Texas Tech with its 14-4 run-rule win in eight innings at Hawks Field on Sunday.

Shortstop Ryan Wehrle had three hits and drove in six runs.

With the victory, Nebraska's second straight run-rule win over the Red Raiders, Nebraska improved to 36-6 overall and 15-3 in the Big 12 to remain in first place in the conference standings. The Huskers won their fifth straight league game, sixth consecutive game overall and notched their 18th win in the last 19 games.

While Wehrle enjoyed one of the best games of his Husker career, fellow sophomore Andy Gerch completed a breakout weekend with his second straight three-hit effort. Gerch, a member of the All-College World Series team as a redshirt freshman for the Huskers in 2005, entered the weekend hitting just .239 (16-67) and had not played since April 8, while nursing a shoulder injury for much of the season.

But the Lincoln native drew a crucial two-out walk in the ninth inning to set up NU's tying run that sent the game to extra innings in the Huskers' eventual 4-3 win in 11 innings in the opener against the Red Raiders. He followed by making just his 17th start of the season in the nightcap, smacking three hits and driving in four runs to spark Nebraska's 14-4 win over Texas Tech in seven innings.

On Sunday, Gerch went 3-for-4 at the plate for the second straight day, driving in one run and scoring two more to fuel the Huskers' rout.

Andrew Brown added three hits, including two RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Brandon Buckman pulled even with teammate Luke Gorsett for the Big 12 Conference home run lead by pounding his 14th home run of the season in the eighth inning to end the game.

Nebraska's 13-hit attack provided more than enough run support for sophomore right-hander Johnny Dorn, who allowed just three earned runs in seven innings by scattering six hits. Dorn improved to 8-2 on the season.

Colt Hynes (4-2) took the loss for Texas Tech after being touched up for nine runs, five earned, on seven hits in just four innings of work.

The Huskers will take the week off from competition to complete final exams, before returning to Big 12 action next weekend at Oklahoma State. The Huskers begin their three-game series with the Cowboys on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m.

me too, i think the funniest thing was when edlefson fell down rounding third.  If he wouldn't have gotten back up and scored, Anderson would have flipped.  I thought i was gonna have a heart attack.

Anderson tripped him, so he could have only been mad at himself

I saw the replay on the Mike Anderson show and anderson wasn't even close to tripping him.
