Lincoln - A collection of nine current and former University of Nebraska football players were among a group of 54 Husker student-athletes who received their undergraduate degrees during spring commencement ceremonies Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Husker football players included among the 2006 graduating class were Donald DeFrand, Isaiah Fluellen, Nathan Krug, Kurt Mann, Matt Schroeder, Andrew Shanle, Fred Thorne, Blake Tiedtke and Dane Todd.

Returning starters Mann (mechanized systems management) and Todd (biological sciences) headlined the class after earning academic All-America honors during the 2005 season from the College Sports Information Directors of America. The two helped add to an ongoing Nebraska tradition that features an NCAA-record 226 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, including a nation-leading 60 football honorees.

Mann will return for his third season as NU’s starting center in the fall, while Todd will line up as the Huskers’ top fullback during the 2006 season. The pair will be just two members of a talented Husker squad looking to build on last year’s 8-4 record and Alamo Bowl victory over Michigan. Fluellen (German) and Shanle (family and consumer science) also will return for their final seasons at NU with degrees in hand.

Tiedtke (exercise science), who started all 12 games last season at free safety for the Blackshirts, and Schroeder (management), a significant contributor at the wide receiver position in his final season, were among a group of five Huskers to earn degrees following the conclusion of their playing careers. DeFrand (sociology) and Krug (exercise science/pre-medicine) finished their careers during the 2004 season, while Thorne (industrial technology education) exhausted his eligibility in 2003.

The spring graduating class of 54 is added to the December class of 30 graduates to bring the total number of Husker student-athletes graduating during the 2005-06 academic year to 84 before summer commencement exercises in August. Nebraska continues to feature one of the highest graduation rates in the nation with an exhausted eligibility graduation rate of 93 percent.
