Boulder - Cornerback Gerett Burl no longer is in the Colorado football program.

"He's been officially dismissed from the football team," CU coach Dan Hawkins said Monday.

Burl was let go this month and plans to transfer. He was suspended twice during spring camp for undisclosed violations of team rules.

After being suspended for two weeks of spring practices, Burl was reinstated April 3 but soon was suspended again.

Burl was a starter on CU's defense last season, finishing fifth on the team in tackles with 61 and second in passes broken up with 14. Under the tutelage of secondary coach Craig Bray, Burl had gone from a shaky cornerback to a solid performer. He was to be in the mix to be a starter this season.

Fewer quarterbacks

Quarterback Mack Brown decided last week to transfer.

"We've already given him a release to a couple of different schools," Hawkins said.

Brown, a Gary Barnett-era recruit from Overland Park, Kan., redshirted last year and may have been asked to change positions by the new staff. Instead, he will try to latch on as a quarterback elsewhere.

Also, redshirt freshman Patrick Devenny will switch from quarterback to tight end.

The movement means there are only four scholarship quarterbacks on CU's roster: juniors Brian White and Bernard Jackson, who will compete for the starting job during preseason camp, senior James Cox and freshman Cody Hawkins.

Footnotes

CU's new strength and conditioning coach, Jeff Pitman, has arrived and is getting settled, Hawkins said. He's expected to retain the support staff that was there under former CU strength coach Greg Finnegan. ... Buffs defensive lineman Taj Kaynor recently underwent wrist surgery, but is fine and will be 100 percent for preseason drills in August.
