  1. I'm not condemning receivers by any means. I'll reiterate my point from earlier, which explains why I think this whole 'wide receivers don't know where the ball is going to be' idea is garbage. Martinez and the wide receivers know the route, therefore both parties know when Martinez is supposed to throw the ball and when the receiver is supposed to get it. But it doesn't matter where the ball is - if it hits you, or is catchable, you make the catch - period. It's pretty black and white, as Pelini would say. The wide receiver needs to expect Martinez to make a perfect throw, and it's their responsibility to adjust to a throw that is catchable. This is what every wide receiver is taught. Furthermore, quarterbacks have to make ridiculous throws in every single game that don't perfectly match the route in practice. An extra defender might be in one place, or the corner might be really tight on the wide receiver, therefore Martinez (or any quarterback) would try to make a back shoulder throw or will try and put it in a place the wide receiver can get to. This is why quarterbacks constantly throw a ball before a receiver is looking, and it's the receiver's responsibility to turn around, find the ball and make the catch. If Martinez' throw is off, that is on Martinez. If Martinez' throw is on, that's on the wide receiver, and this is the case for every single qb/wr tandem in college or pro. I really don't know how I can further explain to some of you that this idea is extremely elementary and complete garbage. This isn't backyard football. Lastly, to really slam my point home, look at an extreme example - Drew Brees and the Saints. Now, don't go drawing crazy comparisons, because I'm definitely not trying to say anything about Martinez/Brees or our WRs vs the Saints WR. But here's my point - Drew Brees constantly throws footballs that match a receiver's route, but are in places that the ball isn't "supposed" to be. For example, in the divisional playoff game against the 49ers, Brees threw a lob pass (into triple coverage) and made his tight end go up and grab it on a post route. In a perfect world, Brees darts the ball across the field and hits Graham in the numbers. Instead, Brees lofts it up and has his tight end go up and make a play. Wide receivers are supposed to find the ball. If it's way off, that's Martinez. If it's catchable, that's on the WR. Great post. About as clear as you can make it.
  2. This alone is why you should be worried about next season. If you watched a game at all this year, you would know that realistically that is not true.
  3. Great topic, but have a feeling it is going to go the direction many of the threads do. Never the less I want to see the swagger back on defense, I want to see our defense flying around and emotionally playing like they use to. I would rather see 11 guys playing fast and full of emotion then 11 guys who are technically sound and trying to keep everything in front of them. Just think what we could do with a defense like that, I have confidence in our Offense.
  4. When is he suppose to make a decision? That is if he has scheduled a date.
  5. Was just said to be the best OT in the nation and "the guy to watch" in the under armour bowl.
  6. To expound upon this point, let's take a look at the top teams in the Big Ten this year: 1. Wisconsin: Russell Wilson, Senior 2. Michigan State: Kirk Cousins, Senior 3. Michigan: Dennard Robinson, Junior 4. Penn State: Matt McGloin, Junior 5. Nebraska: Taylor Martinez, Sophomore 6. Purdue: Caleb TerBush, Junior 7. Iowa: James Vandenberg, Junior Of the seven most-successful teams in the B1G, six of them started an Upperclassman the majority of their games, if not every game. Nebraska was the lone exception, starting Sophomore Taylor Martinez. Anyone think there may be a correlation between experience and success? Bingo.
  7. I honestly think it is between Us and Rutgers...no source or anything, just my gut feeling.
  8. I agree with you that everything starts up front, but for real the o-line has got better from the beginning of the year to this point. And the o-line appears on its way up. The first half of the game, the o-line kept us in the game. They started showing signs of distress when it became obvious we had to pass to get back in the game. They held their own against the most talented DE combo in the nation. The Dline does need to improve, but I think this has more to do with coaching than personnel. The scheme that Bo is trying to run isn't advantageous for rushing the QB. He should become more creative over the off-season as to how he is going to rush the passer. The staff maybe getting the recruiting the right guys, but how come the right guys are getting on the field? This is Pathetic. I don't care if Jamal can't block air, get his ASS on the field. If Reed is only good at running routes, have him do nothing but run routes all day, but he needs to be on the field. Same is true with the RBs. Nothing against Rex, but no one is scared of him. He is not a running back that a D-Coordinator is going to lose sleep over. He is a good consistent player, but we need playmakers on the field to shore up our deficiences. As for defense. Meredith and Carter welcome to the bench. Martin and Ankrah you are up. And hopefully we don't see another walk-on experiement on D, instead have faith in the guys you've recruited and get them ON THE FIELD. Did you just request that Rex be benched? Wow...
  9. What channel is it on Direct TV?
  10. Sorry about just now getting back to ya, but I would put South Carolina in the top tear of the Big 10 if not the top. Don't get me wrong, they have their weaknesses as we exposed in the first half. But as far as an overall defense they would pry be at the top, not just in the Big 10 but in the country. Warrior I agree with your assessment. Footballs weird. If we just capitalize on our opportunities in the first half we're probably on here today saying how their defense wasn't as good as advertised. But their defense made game changing plays, so their reputation prevails. Exactly. At halftime I sat there thinking, "this is a top tier SEC defense"? But then they showed me why.

  12. How did I know you would you use that....I would like to see any team show up to play after what went down at Penn State...
  13. I must have saw wrong, I guess I didn't see the formation throw that pass to Enuwa.....or that formation run the zone read into the endzone.
  14. Your arguing off opinion, which you are entitled to. But at the end of the day stats say we played tougher defense this year.
  15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_fBBQfE-Wo Here is a pretty good final highlight video. There are big time runs by Rex and Taylor, big time catches by our WR's, some big time passes by Taylor, with some DAVID sprinkled in. I think this video shows what Taylor and the WR core are possible of as they grow together, and of course what Rex can do. Hopefully this can lift up some moods, I got goose bumps a few times during it.
  16. Sker target Andrus Peat is there. Thought he might be, just wanted a confirmation.
  17. huskerscott just said that Taylor should remain the starter. I believe we can now close this thread. I respect people who can admit that someone proved them wrong. Not too many people on this board would do what huskerscott did.
  18. Running was way, way off mark? 2010: 965- 12 TD's 2011: 874- 9 TD's And to be noted we played statistically tougher defenses this year, and the coaches have admitted they limited his running. If you are going to say something make sure you are at least right.
  19. Do we have anyone in the game? Or any guys we have legit chances with?
  20. Did some quick stat looking into. Here is what Taylor has done so far and some are calling for his head. After SOPHOMORE Year: Rushing: Rushing Seasons By a Quarterback: 5th (2010) 9th (2011) Rushing Season By Class: 2nd (2010) (missed out on sophmore list by about 50 yards) Passing: Passing Yardage Season: 6th (2011) 11th (2010) Passing Season By Class: 1st Freshman (2010) 1st Sophomore (2011) Total Offense: Total Offense Games By Class: 1st Freshman (2010) 1st Sophomore (2011) Total Offensive Season: 3rd (2011) 7th (2010) Career Total Offense: 3rd (On pace to pace #1 by over 2,000 yards) On Pace to Pass: Career Passing Record Rushing by a QB Total Offense
  21. "NU was OK at passing, Martinez seemed pretty accurate, but the receivers seemed to have problems with dropping a lot of passes. Also, they needed to keep the running option open. At the end of the game when Martinez went pure-passer for a few downs, it just ended in a pile of sacks. The NU O-line wasn't very effective on passing downs if it was obvious it was a passing down." That is an un-biased opinion given by a South Carolina fan on another thread, and I think it is very accurate. Just someone with no past feelings, no love or hate built up.
