  1. Good post. I think it's a horse that won't (and shouldn't) die until our defense figures it out. I'm not saying we're going to figure it out here on Huskerboard but it seems like the most difficult and glaring problem the team currently has and the most worthy of discussion. Offense scheme aside, I think it's bizarre that our teams traditionally make their living off of a mobile quarterback but now we are struggling to stop them. I don't know enough of the details of Bo's defense to offer up an intelligent opinion on what is wrong but obviously something ain't right.
  2. I saw this as well. Some people are saying that Urban Meyer made adjustments to what we were doing, but that's not what I saw at all. He probably did to some degree, but our blitzing really slowed down after Miller's first big run. The best way to slow or stop a good running QB is to get in the backfield and slow him down before he gets started, and then swarm to the ball. We did that for the first 3 or 4 series on defense, and it worked. Then we stopped. And we got our asses handed to us. I thought it looked like Meyer was trying to get his passing game going in the first quarter. We snuffed out the plays so quickly sometimes it was hard to tell if they were actually passing or if it was a designed run for Miller. If the latter, that seems to be a good case for getting at a mobile quarterback before he can get started. Miller is so shifty it's hard to tackle him one-on-one once he gets going north south. Same story with Robinson and Colter. I think after the first quarter Meyer decided practice time was over and turned Miller loose. I still like to watch the Big 12 games over B1G. Maybe it's the quality of football being played or the familiarity of the teams. While watching the Big 12 offenses and seeing the quarterback dropping back I still think our defense would do OK (but not great) against them. The spreads in the B1G with mobile quarterbacks is a different animal and I don't think Bo has figured them out yet. The lack of talent isn't helping. I'm looking forward to NW game to see what adjustments he has made during the bye week. If it's the same mush rush, getting gashed on cutback runs and not accounting for the quarterback, I'll be disappointed.
  3. A columnist pointed out that football is probably not really creating leaders. The players are limited in decision making since the offense and defense are called from the sideline. Related to that, I wonder if we are creating dumb players by overcoaching them. If they are coached in detail what to do when they see the various formations and plays it could become a rather long list. Processing this list in real time and then executing it could be a problem. What if they run something that wasn't seen during film study? Are the players going through the list, matching it to the closest thing and end up doing the wrong thing? I think that might explain some plays where nobody seems to be within yards of the guy with the ball. Sometimes it looks like we forget that it's important to tackle the guy with the football. Using OSU as an example, it was obvious that they had to rely on Braxton for a lot of production but yet he seemed to be unaccounted for on some plays. Going into the game the players should have been coached that OSU might show a lot of different things but at the end of the day Braxton might have the ball and we should be in position to stop him. It's got to be something like this or we're getting blocked really well and don't know how shed blocks.
  4. Bump. Seems more important to discuss then quarterback/offense play. It doesn't take a defensive genius to recognize that our defense has problems. What is good about this defense? What is lacking in this defense?
  5. Saying we won't be NW is a stretch. We'll probably struggle to stop them but I'm not sure how well they'll stop us, especially with two weeks to prepare. Michigan has me really scared right now. Unless the line is about 125 points, I'd take the over. I hope NW runs Colter at quarterback most of the game. Should give an indication if we've figured something out on defense during the bye week. If we shut them down like PSU did then maybe Michigan won't be a blowout, just an ugly loss. My theory is that the defense bottomed out and is improving. As bad as the OSU game was, I expected it to be much worse after watching the UCLA game and our mobile quarterback bugaboo. Total yards went from 650 to 500. I know, it's thin. Call me crazy, but after last year's game I really hope they don't. And remember we had Lavonte on the team and still couldn't stop him....how do you expect us to stop him now? We would have been better off not injuring their starting quarterback last year. Probably would have won. I expect us to fix our defense and win. If we can't then maybe the loss will wake this team up and we will have reached bottom. I hope I'm right and we've already bounced off of it.

  7. I don't mean to futher your derailment of the thread but I assume you are referring to the mission accomplished picture. First I should mention that I've seen that on Huskerboard before but never understood it. When you posted it tonight I thought I "got it" - it's an funny picture because G.W.'s junk is bunched up and is coincidental that the message "Mission Accomplished" is on there. Now that you post saying it is of a political nature I don't know what to make of it. Being conservative myself and having served in the military I would agree with the general message of Mission Accomplished. However, the coffins in the background could be used as ammunition for liberals to say that G.W. needlessly cost the lives of soldiers. What is the origin of this picture? What is it's true message? Please elaborate.
  8. That's one way to look at it but I think we've moved past that. You might also say it was a dick move on his part coming over here and getting us all banned. At least it would flow with the thread.
  9. That's keeping with the topic. Good one on the kilt too.
  10. Does he have any eligibility left? Possible Left/Right Tackle?
  11. Well I wasn't looking for it, but it did kind of pop up and say "hello." Sometimes my attention to detail is a detriment. I still think he was just trying to cover his ears, as in stop the noise. In future posts I'll up my level of attention to detail. Thanks for pointing it out though. I was wondering what you meant by editing. After looking at the picture for a few minutes I thought you were talking about the message. No the message came through loud and clear. It was the "attachment" that caused the . LOL. Either way, we derailed the thread. Mission accomplished.
  12. No, but you can be banned for saying the word penis.....damn I said it! Funny how a Buckeye troll posting got 2 Huskers banned for saying the word penis. Damn it, make it 3.

  14. I was over here looking for funny pictures. http://imagemacros.files.wordpress.com Better then reading Husker fans sniping at each other.
  15. I didn't notice it until you pointed it out! It's kind of fuzzy to make anything of it though. Unless you were looking for it. Are you sure you're not just taking an issue with it since it's not a cat?
  16. I think that picture needs to be "edited" a lot more. Something like this?
  17. Depends on your perspective. Them Buckeyes aren't stupid. [unavailable tinfoil hat emoticon]
  18. Yes. yes we are . When I hear of football players acting out I always wonder if they are suffering brain damage. One of the symptoms is that they lose control over their emotions.
  19. I thought the gyrations in offense and defense performance over the years were interesting also. Our offense is significantly different from last year so it needs some fine tuning to clean up the turnovers and dumb mistakes but I consider it a good offense. If you make a team using our defense from 3 or 4 years ago with this offense where does that put us? I say easily a top 15 team. I take solace in knowing that Bo was head coach for both of these teams. I expect that he will be able to put together a complete team and it could happen soon.
  20. That last paragraph is ridiculous. It's a big frickin city...of course there will be rude people. However, of all the big American cities, Chicago is by far the friendliest IMO. It's not even close. Agreed, but Nebraska doesn't have an equivalent. For some, this will be their first visit to a big city. I thought it prudent to warn them if they interact with Chicagoans they may not get the same response as your average person in Lincoln and they shouldn't be suprised. City folk that are busy running around doing whatever may not take the time to even acknowledge them. Giving the impression that Chicago is a friendly town is probably providing the wrong expectation. Saying that to a New Yorker, not a bad idea. I didn't tell them something outrageous such as expect to get shanked if you approach one. Although all the red people invading the city might put the natives on edge. Joking. My family from Omaha visited once and I left them on their own to explore the city. I'm not sure where they were, but they got lost driving around. Ended up asking some bums (the only people around) for directions who were actually helpful. I thought it was funny how they got out of their situation but concerned me enough that I vowed not to repeat the experiment of leaving family on their own in the city.
  21. Sure we do. I propose this, and we play for it every year: Either the link is bad or you are self censoring Don't think it's my firewall blocking. "http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/701831/386562431.jpg"
  22. That works too. I can see playing OSU becoming like our experience with Texas - frustratingly difficult to beat even in the years where there is no conceivable reason that we shouldn't.
  23. I wasn't sure if it was a case of lost in translation or you were taking the attitude that we kind of take with the Squawkeyes - they aren't good enough to be rival worthy. After last weekend's performance I could understand the sentiment. I was thinking that a pseudo trophy game might motivate our kids next time we play. This other "issue" of running up the score could also be a tradition as long as it is understood that it's not due to poor sportsmanship but rather meant as a statement - "you suck, get better!". I think all of the best programs go through stretches where they need to receive that message. This will probably happen naturally though Other than the outcome, it was cool to see our two programs compete on the gridiron. Glad we didn't wear those atrocious uniforms from Wiscy game.
  24. 10 of the 28 are Big Ten schools or 35% someone is missing.... Even the skunk weasels are on the list The absentees aren't suprising.... a good band is important to a winning tradition! Do you think Gene Smith would accept our apology and gift? We would place a lot of importance in getting that tuba back. It's not like our kicker did anything intentionally It's good that you are on the list. But it should be noted that you can only win the sudler once. That means every band of a university will eventually make the list. In this regard, the list really meant to read the earlier you get on the list the higher ranked you are. As far as the kicker doing intentionally I don't think he did so either. What upset people is that he didn't get the message and move. You guys being new it's understandable. The reason the bands performance ran long is because it was homecoming. The court had to be announced and the winners selected. The bands purpose is to entertain the crowd, and that's exactly what they did. There is no rule to my knowledge that says they have to be off the field before the last second of the halftime clock. In all honesty the blame should be put on the field crew. Buckeyes are being way too civil. What would it take to goad you into a rivalry game with an old brass tuba at stake? It's difficult to get excited over this contrived rivalry game with Iowa. We have higher expectations for our program. I think the "battle of the bands" rivalry could be interesting since it would have it's origin in an actual incident. The extra 5 minutes would allow the bands to entertain longer but historically it's because we insisted it for our kicker. Would it really matter that we don't play in regular season every year? It could apply during a CCG too. None of us would care that it be an official "trophy game" since that's not really part of our tradition. We would value getting the tuba back though.
