  1. I feel like Tommy may have turned a corner, or our playcalling has, either way it looks great. I thought TA made good throws and good decisions for the most part. Even great QB's make a few bad throws a game, but this is the best QB play Nebraska has seen since before Martinez imo. There's never been any question about Tommy's raw arm ability, just decision making. And I'm so happy they gave Wilbon a few carries, and he looked impressive. Did think our D was a little shaky against a one dimensional offense, a few bad throws bailed us out. I think with Maurice and Stolty in there we looked solid up front, without them we looked very average at best. But you ard right, teams will put up points from now on. As long as Tommy and langs have this current flow going, I like our chances up until Ohio State. And holy sh#t, I want to like Utter but he can't snap the ball out of shotgun, it was just brutal. At some point they are going to have to bench him, captain or not.

  3. I listened to the game on radio broadcast so didn't get to watch but it seemed to me our linebackers were AWOL and made dame few tackles. What happened that they ran all over us and the secondary had to make so many tackles ten yards down field> I don't think it's unfair to say our lb's didn't play well. A lot of bad throws helped us out. Jackson is a good back, not great. A better team will make us pay for all of those missed tackles. If we just clean up the fumbles on offense, which I think we should, this game would've been a blowout. But is our defense ready for a team like Ohio State? Not even close imo. Good win no doubt, but we have a loooong ways to go in order to even beat a team like Wisconsin. You can tell me NW always plays us close, but on paper and just watching them play they are a 500 team at best. Happy with the win, but definitely cautiously optimistic about our team right now.
  4. This. I thought TA played very well outside of one pass and langs called a very good game imo. If Tommy plays like that every game we are a very good team. Realistically we should have won this game by 30, but that's the difference between us and top 15 teams right now. I'm also very happy they gave Wilbon a chance, and I thought he performed very well. Idk if he gets that chance without Newby trying to go all Reggie Bush. Quality win overall, with some cleaning up in the ball carrying area we are a very good team in the big ten west.
  5. I didn't get a chance to listen to the full segment as I had a meeting to go to, but DB didn't sound very impressed at first look on SAT. Didn't see a lot of tight spiral throws he was saying, wasn't sure if he was implying that the arm strength wasn't as advertised or something. "Underwhelmed" is the term DB used, I believe. He didn't expand on it much more than what you heard; but, for those who didn't hear the segment, DB was not really impressed with POB's ability to throw during one specific drill. The QBs were doing stem route drills throwing from one set of hashmarks across the field to the numbers (about 20 yards), and DB basically said POB didn't have a lot of mustard on the throws. They weren't very tight spirals. There are obviously a lot of things to take into context here - as DB admitted, it's just one practice. Furthermore, that's one of the more difficult throws to make in football. Yeah, I feel like we may be over-analyzing this. It's one drill, in one practice, on his what, second day? If we start hearing this consistently, then I might be concerned. Seems like most other analysts aren't blown away with his ability, but definitely not "underwhelmed".
  6. I really want one of our young guards to push through and win the RG spot, just seems like Farmer must be missing something. Not to knock Thurston, he's just never stood out to me in his appearances. Very excited to see what Foster can do though, been hearing hype about him for the last few years.
  7. If POB feels comfortable, and is willing, and the coaches think he is the best backup, I'm OK with him playing. Obviously, I don't think it would be a good idea if it amounts to POB seeing a grand total of 10-15 snaps in garbage time all season and that's it. But if he earns the PT, wants to do it and there are beneficial snaps to be had, I say let him play. I wouldn't be surprised if Fyfe maintains the back-up spot, though. I know people let the Purdue game stick in their minds but the team came out of that game feeling more confident in Fyfe's abilities. I think that it would be best for POB to redshirt this year if he's not going to start, I think Fyfe is a reliable enough back-up to handle that for another year. If POB actually is better than Armstrong right now, then I'm definitely okay with him starting. But I doubt that he will overtake TA as a freshman. I haven't seen much of Tanner Lee, but what I could find didn't blow me away. He seemed to be average on a below average team. But we'll see what he can do with the talent we have around him here as opposed to Tulane. If I were a betting man, I would say the chances are good that TA starts, Fyfe backs up, and POB redshirts. Tanner Lee is kind of a variable for next year. But you never really know this early, I just have a hard time seeing the staff burn a year with POB just so he can be the back-up. This is what I'm predicting, as well. POB would have to have a really good spring/fall to beat out TA. As most people would agree (I think) beating out a senior with ~three years starting experience is going to be extremely difficult. Now, if TA were to start, and he ended up getting injured, it'd be interesting to see what happens. If it was early in the year and POB was doing well enough, would they yank the redshirt instead of Fyfe? There would be a lot of factors at play there. All I want is the best guy playing. TA, POB or Fyfe. Whoever gives us the best chance to win the given circumstances. If POB ends up getting shoved 3rd/4th down the depth chart this year then I think that will be totally OK. Not every freshman quarterback can step in and play right away, even the highly touted ones. I guess I just don't think that it's a given that POB steps in and is immediately better than Fyfe, let alone TA. I think POB will be 3rd string, and I don't see why you wouldn't redshirt a freshman 3rd string QB. Even if he's 2nd string, is the gap so large between him and Fyfe that it's worth losing him for a year? Obviously injuries can change all of this, but TA has been durable throughout his career so I'm going to assume he'll stay healthy. I buy the idea that being 2nd string better prepares you to play than the scout team, I just think it is almost always better for a true freshman to redshirt, learn the system, get comfortable with your surroundings, and get to know your teammates before you are thrown to the fire. Especially at QB. A lot of QB's who step in as freshman and have amazing success redshirted (i believe), such as Winston and Manziel. I'm not trying to say POB isn't good, I just think some of you guys are getting way too hyped on him.
  8. We dont have the personnel yet to be effective with it as our base. We have not recruited the type of athletes in the back end to play exclusively quarters. When Mich St was an elite defense the past few years they had 2 top round CB's and 2 safeties that covered like corners and hit like LB's. Last year they didnt have any lock down CB's and their safeties were suspect at best and teams made a living making them cover 1 on 1. We took advantage of Mich st safeties covering our best WR's. To be a quarters team you must be extremely talented on the back end and have 2 DE's that make the ball come out of the QB's hands quickly. We dont have the talent on the back end or the pass rush yet. MSU also played press coverage like 95% of the time. As you mentioned, personnel is key. You need bigger strong corners who can play man. A DL who can get after the QB. Nate made a statement this week that last year guys went back to the "old scheme" a times and it means stuff up. All 11 guys pulling the same way also helps.... I love the concept of quarters coverage. With the right personnel it's great. I really like Seattles coverage schemes. Gotta get the guys and the wins will come. Agree with this sentiment. Our corners were solid towards the end of the year, but I'm not sold that they can be successful in this scheme. They are essentially left on an island every play, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find many teams in the nation with a talented enough secondary to pull off having their corners play what is essentially man every play and not get beat a few times a game. I think our safetys last year were horrible fits for this system as well, they seemed like linebackers. Cockrell didn't seem to have the athleticism to consistently cover WR's one on one, and Gerry is a robot. The guy looks like a linebacker when having to move laterally, I think he was so successful in the previous scheme because he basically roamed and never had to cover in space. I personally think Gerry would be better suited as an OLB who covers TE's and RB's, I just don't think he can cover WR's. I think recent recruiting in the secondary is promising, but I'm still skeptical that our defense will be any better on the back end any time soon. I'm hopeful, but skeptical.
  9. I agree, I feel like if he's medically cleared and he and his family are okay with it, let him play. I think it's pretty early to say whether or not he will succeed at WR. I know he's a good athlete, but we don't even know if he can catch. Overall, I think this is a good move. He was going nowhere on the QB depth chart, so why not try to utilize him somewhere else on the field? We will have the QB depth especially with Lee coming in next year. Worst case scenario he never plays. Win/Win right?
  10. If POB feels comfortable, and is willing, and the coaches think he is the best backup, I'm OK with him playing. 11. I'm not sure why there's so much criticism of our offense this off-season. I thought overall, it was okay for our first year. I'm not really sure why they put so much emphasis on pass blocking with RB's, but I semi-trust that the coaches know what's going on better than I. Of course we have things to work on, run and pass game. Which team doesn't? Our defense is the real problem. Our best safety was a true freshman (Williams) in my opinion, and our scheme leaves corners completely on an island. Only a handful of corners in the country can consistently cover a receiver 1-1 for an entire game and not get beat. Just look at the scheme, we completely bail out to stop the run which leaves us (obviously) susceptible to the pass and the QB run. I like Kalu and Jones, I really do. But I'm not sure any team can be successful week to week whether or not they run for 200 yards a game if we can't stop an average QB from tearing our corners and DB's apart. And our safety's, Gerry and Cockrell where essentially linebackers. Cockrell wasn't athletic to cover anybody with a little speed, and Gerry is a robot. He can't move laterally and cover a receiver running anything other than a go or post, he just can't. I like the guy when it comes to stopping the run, but I feel like in this system you NEED safetys who can cover receivers 1 on 1. Gerry isn't that. I realize he won't be benched, but I really think he should be for the better of the defense as a whole. Maybe move him to linebacker? And with RB's, I think it's clear Wilbon is the best natural runner with the ball in his hands. I'm not sure why he didn't get any carries past the BYU game, but he should touch the ball every game. I don't care if you can't pass block, Ameer couldn't! If you carry the ball and consistently get more yardage than other backs, you should play! It's called running back, not pass blocking back. To be fair, the coaches must have some sort of insight that I don't, I sure hope they do. Ozigbo is a close second IMO, but Wilbon needs to get more carries this year. I still trust the coaches, I just have a hard time believing Wilbon is so bad at everything besides carrying the ball that it out-weighed his value and he was fourth string.
