The Nittany Lions were impressive in non-conference play, going 12-1 with the only loss being a double-OT loss to Charlotte on Nov. 20. In Big Ten play, PSU has had opportunities, as eight of their conference losses were by two possessions or less or in overtime. The Nittany Lions had lost their last six games before knocking off Minnesota 79-76 on Sunday in Minneapolis to complete a season sweep of the Gophers. The Nittany Lions feature one of the top scorers in the Big Ten in fifth-year senior D.J. Newbill, who leads the conference in scoring at 20.7 points per game. The 6-foot-4 guard also tops PSU in assists with 3.2 per game and chips in 4.9 rebounds per game. Junior Brandon Taylor is second on the team in scoring at 9.3 points per game, while freshman Shep Garner averages 9.1 points per game. All three players have at least 50 3-pointers, as the trio has combined for 155 of Penn State’s 205 3-pointers on the year. Senior Ross Travis leads PSU with 6.3 rebounds per game.

The Terrapins, who can be either the first or second seed in next week’s Big Ten Tournament, have won their last six games, most recently a 60-50 win at Rutgers on Tuesday night. The Terrapins finished the regular season by going 18-1 at home, but are just 5-4 in true road games this season. Turgeon is a familiar face for long-time Husker fans, as he played at Kansas from 1984 to 1987 for Larry Brown and also served as an assistant at KU from 1987 to 1992. He served as a head coach at Jacksonville State, Wichita State and Texas A&M before taking the Maryland job prior to the 2011-12 season. Maryland, which averages 69.9 points per game, feature a trio of double figure scorers in freshman guard Melo Trimble, senior guard Dez Wells and junior forward Jake Layman. The Terrapins rank second nationally in free throws made, as Trimble leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally with 181 free throws, while ranking fifth in the Big Ten at 16.0 points per game. Wells provides a veteran presence who averages 15.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while Layman chips in 13.2 points per game. The Terrapins stretch defenses to the 3-point line, ranking fifth in the Big Ten with 222 3-pointers while shooting 37 percent from beyond the arc.

The Illini are coming off an 86-60 win over Northwestern on Saturday night, a victory which snapped a three-game losing streak. In that game, Illinois went 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the first half in building a 22-point halftime lead. Senior guard Rayvonte Rice led Illinois with 19 points and added seven rebounds to place five players in double figures. Illinois, which went 20-15 and reached the second round of the NIT last season for third-year coach John Groce, had four returning starters, but have been without senior guard Tracy Abrams, who has missed the entire season following knee surgery. The Illini opened the year with six straight wins, including a 62-54 victory over Baylor in the Las Vegas Invitational, before faltering with three losses in a four-game stretch, including to then-nationally ranked Miami and Villanova. In Big Ten play, Illinois has been streaky over the last month, stringing together four straight wins, including victories over Michigan State and Michigan before a three-game losing streak. Rice, who missed nine games because of injury and suspension, tops the Illini in both scoring (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg) and is shooting 46 percent from 3-point range. Illinois has a trio of double-figure scorers in sophomores Malcolm Hill (14.3 ppg) and Kendrick Nunn (11.4 ppg). Both players are shooting over 38 percent from long distance, as the Illini are shooting 37 percent from 3-point range as a team.

The Buckeyes are coming off back-to-back losses at Michigan State and at Michigan. OSU has been exceptional at home, going 16-1 with the lone loss coming in a 71-65 loss to Iowa on Dec. 30. Matta, who served as an assistant to former Nebraska Coach Barry Collier at Butler, is in his 11th season at OSU and has guided the Buckeyes to eight NCAA appearances, including an NCAA runner-up finish in 2007 and a Final Four appearance in 2012. OSU returned a pair of starters from a team that won 25 games and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State is a balanced squad which is second in the Big Ten in scoring offense (77.2 ppg) and third in scoring defense (61.2 ppg). OSU shoots nearly 50 percent from the field as a team and is holding opponents to 39 percent shooting. Freshman D’Angelo Russell is a frontrunner for national freshman of the year, as he leads OSU in scoring (19.0 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg) while ranking third in the Big Ten with 5.4 assists per game. Marc Loving and Sam Thompson join Russell to give OSU three scorers, as Loving averages 10.9 points per game, including 51 percent from 3-point range, while Thompson is at 10.3 points per game. Senior point guard Shannon Scott paces the Big Ten in assists at 6.1 per game, while Jae’Sean Tate averages 8.4 points per game on 58 percent shooting. OSU has 10 players who play at least double figures in minutes.

With the win, the Hawkeyes snapped a two-game losing streak, as they had lost at Northwestern and against Minnesota. Iowa has been up and down in Big Ten play, posting wins at Ohio State and Michigan, but has gone 3-5 in its last eight contests. The Hawkeyes brought back three starters and 10 lettermen for Head Coach Fran McCaffery, who is in his fifth season at Iowa after serving stints at Lehigh, UNC Greensboro and Siena. The Hawkeyes went 20-13 before losing to Tennessee in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes are one of the deeper teams in the Big Ten as nine players average at least 10 minutes per game while no player averages 30 minutes per contest. Iowa features six players who average at least 7.0 points per game. Senior forward Aaron White leads Iowa in both scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) while junior forward Jarrod Uthoff chips in 12.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. The Hawkeyes are a solid defensive team, holding opponents to under 40 percent shooting and blocking 4.6 shots per game to rank third in the conference.
