  1. Sean Payton, known for his recruiting prowess
  2. it’s possible (and probable if you look at the context) that it says more about the two programs and not the two coaches. Not all wins are created equal
  3. Curious who the meyer or bust crowd thinks is the next best now that he’s not going to be coaching anywhere next year. Thoughts?
  4. this is such a bad perspective on the addtl buyout. some millionaire or group of them going to lose that in the market anyway if they hadn’t spent it. Im Sure you’ll lose as much sleep over it as they will.
  5. Here’s a guy that pointed out five great comps for where we should be. Not USC, not Clemson. Baylor and Arkansas were in really dire straights not long ago. Both hired highly regarded position coaches/coordinators that were football junkies. Both have a strong identity and recruit to it. No need to stray from it because it works. They’re also extremely disciplined and have coaches that hold themselves to the same standard. BYU and Utah are both interesting because they were never bad and they have a lot of cultural elements going. Great fans, etc. sound familiar? They just made great hires and were patient. Neither was flipped overnight. Kentucky is the slow rebuild nobody wants to commit to. Fundamentals, recruiting to scheme, technique, and depth are all the reasons why. It would be hard to replicate due to proximity to talent but the blueprint would translate. Unfortunately none of the coaches are coming because these programs have the money to retain and recruit. That said, Nebraska should be in this group of schools. This is our ceiling. Grind, make the 12-team, and when a QB clicks you get a shot at making a run. Unless you’re Georgia, Alabama, or OSU this is your best bet. I could see Texas emerging in this group since they’ll probably pick up steam and Sark knows how to make it work. The difference between those five schools and Nebraska is that they don’t need to portal. We can’t be next man up because the next man up is a true freshman who hasn’t even been coached. It’s going to take time.
  6. An injury and another injury and you’re back at 3-9. Proves my point. Building a winning organization takes consistency in recruiting to your scheme and teaching technique. Not fun or sexy but look around at who wins and they’ve got great teachers and tons of depth. Minnesota might be annoying but they’re on the right track. Iowa and Wisconsin do it on one side of the ball. UGA/Bama/OSU/Clemson have a decade of recruiting and development on the whole country which is why everyone is so far behind them. A&M is not far behind. LSU will be there shortly and so will Florida. Nebraska hasn’t even started the process.
  7. Again, Clemson/Alabama/Georgia/Ohio State aren’t portaling. If you guys wanna win the big ten west sure, but it took Clemson a decade to get in the game with all the talent advantages in the world.
  8. Faster yes, but depth and culture take time. Michigan State vs Ohio State 2021 shows the difference
  9. some of you guys really underestimate how hard it is to win a championship. It takes a decade to even put your team in position
  10. That doesn’t make any sense. This is essentially homecoming weekend and there are going to be Fox execs in town on top of boosters/alums/corporate sponsors. He’s got a confirmed meeting with urban this weekend, so why piss the guy off by talking to another candidate the only time you’ll host him this year? Also, it’s not like we’re competing for the guys services. There’s no need for cloak and dagger. If you really want to talk to the guy, fly out during the week.
  11. Not sure that's enough. I recommend bringing in a transfer QB with experience at a major program. Maybe someone with experience against future opponents.
  12. It's definitely for coaching. After Colo St let Urban essentially hire their coach (addazio) there's not a chance an AD let's him consult on an actual candidate. I don't see Trev as that impressionable examples aside.
  13. Our depth is actually atrocious. Sure you can patch the holes in the portal but the only way you can portal into a conference title is if you just need that last piece. HS guys are what get you there. Four-year development, four-year familiarity with scheme. Those relationships take years to rebuild and they're pretty bad right now. last staff put a poor emphasis on it.
  14. Well Sipple just confirmed a meeting with Urban is happening this weekend so I'm sorry to disappoint you. It's about to turn up to 10
  15. Peterson is off the table. Guy doesn't want to coach anymore and can take the Boise job whenever he wants to come back to coaching. There are guys that could win like him anyway. Early signing period makes keeping Mickey around regardless a must. You don't keep coaches just to retain players obviously but you'd be pressed to find a better recruiting coordinator in the market. He's telling kids he'll be around, so I'm sure Trev has given him assurances. I don't see a candidate on any of these lists outside Stoops with his lifetime deal that would have someone comparable. Vince Marrow is who I'm referring to. Even then you could probably have them both on the same staff although one would lose their AHC title.
  16. Not super up on Trev's time at UNO but I know he made some great hires. I'm already thrilled at his football hires. Here's a list of guys he convinced to join a staff led by the hottest seat in football. - Mark Whipple. People said he performed a miracle with Pickett. Hot name this offseason and a lot of people wanted him. Broyles Nominee - Bryan Applewhite. A lot of people wanted him too. He's moving up fast. Not sure how much we can credit him with AG's success but there has to be some. - Mickey Joseph. Sure, it was probably understood that he'd be the interim but I'm sure recruiting to LSU is easier. I recall all three of these guys being top-tier candidates.
  17. Dennis Dodd also threw a wet blanket on the idea today. Guy's as reliable as they come. If it were happening there would be some positive reporting on it this weekend. Haven't seen any at all.
  18. Dennis Dodd reporting today that Urban is extremely unlikely. Urban is the only guy I'd say has a shot that we'd have the luxury of making a swift hire on, so if it were happening there would probably be more smoke. Brendan Stai's pretty involved with the program from a fundraising aspect and he's in concurrence. There's nobody to compete with at the moment (Auburn still has a coach, ND still has a coach) so it's useless to muck up the process with press. No need to obfuscate things like we'd have to typically, especially if you work in fundraising. Obviously the guy will be on campus this weekend so if it was going to happen, every day after Monday makes it less and less likely. Trev/someone will certainly have some type of dialogue with him while he's in town. Would be interested to see if he joins Reggie and Leinhart for dinner. All facts and reporting aside, imagine the scene if he announced it himself on big noon. Lol
  19. Yeah fair, it's speculation until there's a university press release but this is a message board where we speculate. Doesn't mean there's not a very high likelihood. Wiltfong wouldn't report it if there was a low likelihood that it was true.
  20. AHC = "associate head coach". Brian Kelly tried to retain him as such. I mean sure anything can happen, but Wiltfong said via Malachi Coleman that Mickey's on a 3-year deal and that he's "not going anywhere". The value he provides a new staff is huge and a lot of people familiar with him don't describe him as a head coach. It would really shock me if he was let go by a new staff. The guy has an exceptional reputation nationally.
  21. That game was an absolute ref show. That was one of a ton of awful calls.
  22. Two points here: 1. It's unlikely that the wild-west-ness of NIL and athlete compensation remains that way. Sure, the NCAA is feckless and understaffed but there's going to be an FBS/FCS split by 2026. When Gene Smith talks, listen. That will bring rules into play that would reduce the NFL-ness of college football by standardizing things. 8-million NIL deals are going away by the time the market corrects. 2. Sean Payton is done. There's a ton of really nasty stuff about the Saints org that the NFL buried that has to do with the New Orleans Catholic Church. He wasn't involved but he's the face of their ownership and would see his name dragged if that ever came back up. If he's a hot name in the media again I'd expect it comes up and he's probably fine drinking corona on the beach instead of giving that a chance to hurt his shot at the HOF. Bountygate was his third strike so to speak.
