  1. I welcome Thorson and am glad he'll be a Husker! ditto
  2. Look, this issue is dead. Callahan is gone. It was never my intention to call you ignorant; I was merely using an expression. This topic is as old as dirt and many an internet message board war has been waged over it. The short version is that several former players complained about being left out in the cold, the facilities became like Fort Knox, high school coaches across the state complained about Callahan's cold shoulder, there was talk that walk ons were treated like punching bags with no real shot to contribute on the field, the blackshirts were reduced to nothing, and the locals that lived around Callahan claimed that he was not much involved with anything but watching film in his office. This, along with several personal quirks like claiming he'd done and excellent job in all areas when Kansas shelacked our asses by 80 points, has led to the great hope that Pelini can restore what has been forgotten around these parts, and that starts with the walk on program, and it starts with the attitude, fire, and drive it represents and can deliver to the players with scholarships to make them better. Part of the mythical Nebraska Way involves the notion that any kid in this state who chucks hay bales around all summer has the opportunity to come in and put on the scarlet and cream. Now it may in reality be just like the concept that anyone born in the States can be president, but the opportunity itself is worth more than a lot of people give it credit for. ok. these things i know of. let's just say i have a different view on them then you do amd leave it at that then.
  3. Callahan made very few attempts to embrace the traditions of the team or the state. Such as? When you basically call me ignorant (being asleep for several years) but then try to move the subject somewhere else, it makes me think you can't really answer these questions. if you don't want to discuss it here, you can send me a pm.
  4. A walk on program is only viable when the walk ons know they have a legitimate shot to contribute, and they're not going to be brushed under the rug because a 5-star thinks his sh#t should be packaged as air freshener. What you are saying here makes sense, but is there any evidence that this was a problem under BC? The walk on program was up and running, he was handing a few schollys each year to walk ons nor have i heard any of the walk ons under BC complain.
  5. To put it bluntly, if you believe Callahan showed half the respect for this state that Pelini has so far, you've just not been paying attention for awhile. i guess i haven't been paying attention then... even though i've been following pretty much everything. i don't see where BC disrespected the state. from what i could tell, the guy gave it his all. i think this sort of talk is just propaganda, honestly.
  6. If we're being honest, isn't that basically what 90+ percent of these walk ons will be treated as under Bo? Most of them aren't going to outperform the scholly players in practice, which means.... To me it just seems like spin. We're basically going to do the same things as any other program, we're just going to give them a lot more pub and make them feel warm and fuzzy about it.
  7. I didn't fall asleep, but i'm not sold on this supposed "revival" of the walk on program that everyone seems to be eating up. TO made comments about re-establishing the walk on program, but BC didn't do away with it. How exactly is it being improved? So far, we have around 17 walk ons for this class i believe. This number isn't much different from the 16 that BC took last season. So if the numbers aren't different, that imply the quality is different. Could be the case, but how exactly is the quality better? The accepted theory is that BC treated the walk on program badly, but no one can really say why. As near as i can tell, all the talk about the walk ons is as much pr as it is anything of real substance.
  8. Heard a kid by the name of Damon Betchtold will walk on too. I've also heard that Damon Benning was pretty high on this kid a while back - considered him a better prospect than Tim Biere prior to getting hurt (or something along these lines).
  9. This is different than other schools?
  10. To paraphrase, he got to talk to Pelini, Osborne, and Cotton. Each of them basically said the same thing. Whether you're a full scholarship player or a walk on, you're going to get treated the same. Aside from having tuition, books, and room & board paid... what's left for them to be treated the same in?
  11. Even if he gets drafted, i don't think his college fb career is over. Didn't Dixon from Oregon play minor league ball this last summer?
  12. i don't know about rivals and scouts rankings, but i do think we need to take the best athletes we possibly can. If we do this, then it doesn't really matter what rivals says - top 30 or top 5.
  13. Next year, i think the offense will be pretty similar to this years. As the seasons go by, i expect the offense to become increasing spread like. OU's offense is technically a spread i think - i could see Bo liking something along these lines.
  14. Thanks. Just noticed that all his awards were from '06, and then noticed the location. Did he get hurt last year or something?
  15. I think it was posted somewhere that we can take up to 27 this year.
  16. the current thought going around is they hope one doesn't grade out of school. academic casuatly. i think three of them are early enrollees. Might count towards last years class.
  17. provided that he isn't mauled by a pack of rabid squirrels or gets hit with a bolt of lightning. kid has had awful luck.
  18. i don't see how. PC is free to contact recruits. Most people wouldn't recommend talking up another program, but i don't think it's illegal (and PC isn't hurting for players anyway).
  19. i thought Baker was definitely going to the D line and Ricky probably won't qualify? didn't realize Thompson. that makes me feel a little better.
  20. Do we have any O lineman that aren't walk ons?
  21. So long as he was up front with our staff about his desire to go to A&M and that if he got the chance he would go there, i have no problem with how this went down. If he led our staff to believe that he was fully pledging himself to NU and A&M was no longer in the picture, then this decommitt would look pretty shaddy on his part. Have no idea which it is, so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
  22. i've heard otherwise. In addition to the 85 limit, you can't give out more than 25 in a class. You can bring more kids onto campus, but you have to get creative - like a grey shirt or spring enrollee. Technically these count towards another class.
  23. Yea... because in 7 seasons at Missouri, all Pinkel has done is coach Brad Smith - 8000 yards passing, 4000 yards rushing.... and Chase Daniel - Heisman finalist as a junior... And if you think Gabbert is 'very raw', you obviously haven't seem him play. Most QB's are somewhat raw as high schoolers. Pinkel and OC Dave Christiansen will teach him more than he would ever get at NU. This might be the dumbest post I've seen in this thread, and that's not easy. I wouldn't expect fans on a tiger board to hold back on their feelings for BC or any other Husker. I'm sorry that my opinion hurts you so, but i'm not being demeaning or disrespectful of Pinkel. If you can't handle hearing an opinon you don't like, maybe you shouldn't be on this board. Pinkel has done well at Mizzou, but he's mostly been succesful because of his recruiting imo. This does not mean he is a bad coach, there are several others i would put in this category including Mack Brown and Lute Olson (and i'm an Arizona fan). Brad Smith put up some good numbers, but i think his career was more than a little disappointing compared to what it could have been. Most Mizzou fans i've talked with agree - infact they are generally harsher than i am about his career. BS also doesn't appear to have been prepared well at all for the NFL, which i assume is Gabbert's ambition. Daniel is proving to be a terrific college QB, but he basically arrived as is. He didn't need much development. About the only thing he needed to work on was his patience.
