  3. Can you come up with an 'Ode to Beck'?
  4. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/foot...aska/index.html By Stewart Mandel, SI.com Why Nebraska can win it all: In Year 3 of his regime, Bill Callahan finally has an experienced quarterback, senior Zac Taylor, to run his West Coast offense. But the real strength of the Huskers will be their defense. Pass-rushers Adam Carriker and Jay Moore return to an attacking unit that posted 50 sacks last year. The veteran secondary should be one of the nation's best. What must fall into place: The offensive line (38 sacks allowed last year) and running game (107th nationally) must improve considerably, though they showed signs in the Alamo Bowl win over Michigan. It will help if sophomore I-backs Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn can break big runs. Taylor needs to cut down on his interceptions (12 last year). A big-play receiver needs to emerge. How it could go wrong: The Huskers' Sept. 16 game at USC could be a harsh buzz-kill if they get blown out. Callahan has devoted his last two recruiting classes to adding much-needed speed at the skill positions, but it's possible Nebraska still isn't where it needs to be. Even if it is, Taylor & Co. won't be able to get much done if the retooled O-line struggles like it did last year. Good omen: The last time Nebraska won a national championship, in 1997, the Huskers also visited a Pac-10 campus (Washington) in the third week of the season.
  5. Article on AJ Newcomer Jones ready to be thrown into cornerback mix BY BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star Tuesday, Aug 08, 2006 - 12:40:25 am CDT Andre Jones can honestly say he knows how Zackary Bowman is feeling. Jones was a freshman at Kentucky in 2003 when a broken leg ended his season after three games. “They had to put a rod in my shin,” Jones said. “I know what that feels like, to go down and not know what your next move could be.” For Jones, a 6-foot, 195-pound cornerback, that move was a transfer to Fresno City (Calif.) Community College. He earned a medical redshirt and played there for two seasons, and now, only a few practices into his Nebraska football career, is faced with a daunting challenge. Bowman, a senior cornerback for the Huskers, suffered an ACL tear in Saturday’s practice that will sideline him for the 2006 season. Jones, a highly-touted junior college transfer, is among the top candidates to replace him. “When he went down, it was a heartfelt loss,” Jones said. “I know it was disappointing to him, but he’ll be back. God don’t let bad things happen to good people. He’ll be back. And I look forward to playing with him (next year), hopefully.” But what about this year? The secondary was one position where Nebraska could ill afford to lose any players, and already, the Huskers appear to be turning to a newcomer to help fill a void. Any extra pressure? “Honestly, a little bit,” Jones said. “But I kind of have to zone that out. I’m here to set my own tempo. Zack was his own player, and he was a great player. I’m glad I’ve got my shot. I’m looking forward to that.” Jones, a native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., came to Nebraska ranked among the top junior college transfers in the nation. In two seasons at Fresno City, Jones recorded 104 tackles with seven interceptions. What can Nebraska fans expect to see from Jones? “They’re going to see a lot of finesse, hustle, always running to the ball, excitement,” Jones said. “You’re going to see the best from me. Nothing else.” Of course, as is generally the case with newcomers, learning a new system can hold back those physical strengths, at least initially. Bowman, also a highly-regarded junior college transfer last season, didn’t really begin to flourish until the final part of the season. Nine of Bowman’s 14 pass breakups came in NU’s final three games. Jones can probably understand why. “These aren’t easy schemes, but I’m getting them, slowly but surely,” Jones said. “It’s almost like being a freshman all over again. You’re learning different things, you’re learning different techniques, schemes. It’s tough, at times. “I was getting frustrated a little bit with some of the calls, and (Bowman) was there, (saying) ‘Keep working, keep working.’ He kind of helped me get through it.” Jones also said he’s learned from Cortney Grixby, Nebraska’s most experienced returning cornerback, and junior Titus Brothers. “They’re staying on me, making sure I know these things, because they were once in my spot, too,” Jones said. “I’m learning.” Since Bowman’s injury, Jones has been primarily working with the No. 1 defense. Before, he was working with the second unit, meaning quarterback Joe Ganz had a chance to throw against him. “He’s good. He’s just got some technique he’s got to learn, our system technique,” said Ganz, Nebraska’s top backup quarterback. “Other than that, he’s a hell of an athlete. He’s got great hips. He can run, he can cover. He’s big. I mean, he’s short, but he’s a big body.” Jones is also practicing on special teams as a punt returner and kickoff returner. Last season in junior college, Jones returned 15 kickoffs for 392 yards. How he’ll figure into Nebraska’s special teams remains to be seen. But for sure, Jones will be a factor in the Huskers’ secondary. “The caliber of his tempo is unbelievable, the way he flies around the field and covers and runs,” Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said. “His energy is tremendous. We’re looking for great things from Andre. He’s a top-shelf corner with tremendous athletic ability and coverage ability.” Said Jones: “Zack made his own name. I have to make my own name now.” By the way, his kickoff return average was 26yds
  6. If someone wants to be there and be the starting QB (or any position for that matter), they'll find a way to learn the system.
  7. Easily IMO. You go back, say you're sorry for letting down the team and explain to everyone his mom's comments in no way reflect his opinions and he doesn't agree with what his mom said. Saying and doing that to me would get him more respect from the rest of his team and maybe even the fans but he took the weak way out.
  8. He's on now Harrison apparently wanted to come back but because of what his mommy said, he felt he couldn't face his teammates in the locker room. Cali is on now....
  9. ROFLMAO!! They were playing bits of Beck's song "Loser" as a tribute to Harrison
  10. Exactly!!! Instead of his mom telling his son to man up and just play harder, she's gonna baby him and put the blame on someone else.
  11. I'm not too worried. When Taylor came in, no one really knew anything about him but Callahan seen something in him we apparently didn't. I think Cali and Co. see something in Ganz we may be missing. Lets wait and see how Ganz does this year. He may surprise us all
  12. Maybe he'll transfer to NC and play behind Dailey. If the kid wants to whine about being #4 and he's not man enough to stand up in front of his teammates and say "I let you guys down, I'm sorry" let him go. He ain't worth the coddling. :hmmm This could hurt us in the QB race in the short term. I read somewhere most QB prospects have committed already with only a smattering few left. 'Course to Callihan's credit, he seen something in Taylor no one else did so maybe that'll happen again next year. The rest of the players don't need this distraction and it's apparent Beck is a distraction.
  13. Any word whether or not Beck showed up today to practice?
  14. I watched a news blirp down here in OKC on the Huskers, specifically Taylor, and I was impressed with him. I never really get the chance to actually listen to what he has to say other than reading it, but I really enjoyed listening to Zac. They (the sports reporter) asked him how his family felt about him playing for Nebraska when his dad was an OU player back in the late 70's and his entire family lives in Norman and root for OU. He said "they're coming around!" Some OU fans down here really like Zac and wished OU would have given him a closer look when he was in High School. Glad they didn't
  15. Maybe Bomar called Beck and told him he could makes lots of money selling cars in Oklahoma
  16. Dailey looking forward to fresh start Associated Press Posted: 1 day ago CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Everything mounted for Joe Dailey at Nebraska - the interceptions, the losses and, worst of all, the pressure. So, he did what mobile quarterbacks do best. He escaped. After fleeing the Cornhusker State for Tobacco Road, Dailey is embracing a fresh start and the competition for the starting job at North Carolina. "I've got two years to redeem myself," Dailey said Saturday during the team's media day. "I guess I'm out to dispel all rumors." And the junior is out to prove that he's no longer the square peg who two years ago was thrust into the round holes of Nebraska coach Bill Callahan's West Coast offense. "I'm pushing the restart button, I guess," Dailey said. Surviving Lincoln's pressure-cooker prepared the Tar Heels' new quarterback for his battle with redshirt freshman Cam Sexton - and for the grind of the Atlantic Coast Conference season, North Carolina coach John Bunting said. "At that university, there's pressure there. In this conference we play in, there's pressure every single week," Bunting said. "He's been there and done that. He's going to face that every single Saturday." Dailey hopes the results are better in Chapel Hill than they were in Lincoln. During his last season at Nebraska, he threw 19 interceptions and was blamed for the Cornhuskers' first losing season since 1961. These days, Dailey is working to master a toned-down version of the West Coast scheme being installed by new Carolina offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. "What I was involved in (at Nebraska) was a whole lot different ... different motions, you could run a play from every different formation," Dailey said. The Tar Heels' system, he said, is "very generic, very basic and all I want to do is complete the ball." That seems a whole lot simpler than what he was trying to do as a 'Husker. Dailey came to Nebraska in 2003 to run coach Frank Solich's triple-option. But Solich was fired after that season and replaced by Callahan, who then scrapped that system for a passing scheme that the mobile Dailey never really seemed to grasp. The Cornhuskers struggled all season, capping a 5-6 finish with a 26-20 loss to Colorado in which Dailey was picked off four times. During the following spring, he sank to fourth on the depth chart. Not surprisingly, many fingers pointed at the quarterback. All Dailey could do, he said, was suck it up. "No one stuck up for me. I had to take the blame," he said. "That's what I had to do. I realize that. I've got to take responsibility for everything that happens in my life." So, he decided to transfer and called up one of the Cornhuskers' former assistants - Marvin Sanders, who was fired by Callahan and later surfaced at North Carolina. He sat out last season as a redshirt and now has two years to resurrect his playing career. "At the time, I was very young, obviously, and I didn't understand the dynamics of the game or the situation," Dailey said. "I felt like I was put in a situation where it was hit-or-miss. Obviously, it was a miss. Struck out. But I had a second chance (and) I was very grateful for it." http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/5848596
  17. Beck just needs to man up and get back to practice if he wants to move up the depth chart. But if he's going to whine about not being the No. 2 guy, then I think it's time for him to leave
  18. This sux! The good thing for Bowman, if there is such a thing, is he can come back next year if he gets a medical redshirt (which, I don't see why he won't) Andre Jones is a JUCO with lots of playing time and has impressed the coaches from day one. I think he'll step in and do just fine in Bowman's place. And imagine our secondary next year with Bowman, Jones and Grixby out there. Get well Zach!! We'll miss ya this year but look forward to seeing you dominate next year!
  19. There was a caller on the radio early here in OKC who claimed he learned an article was going to be posted on the Houston Chronicles website tomorrow and in it, would be details about how OU accused Texas of asking it's female student body to offer sexual favors to recruits in return for some housing allowance/assistance and this Bomar thing was started by Texas as a retaliatory event. When the radio station called the writer (who is a legit writer with the Houston Chronicle) he laughed and said "How am I supposed to write that when I'm not even at work?" Apparently he had no clue about this supposed article and was at some college covering practices. Let the spin-meisting begin AR...I agree. The media seems to be anti-Nebraska most of the time.
  20. I've never liked Jim Rome. Far as I'm concerned he can go piss up a burning rope
