  1. Reminds me of the big old Olds convertable (I think it was an Olds) that was on ebay last year. Somewhere in the Arlington area. Only driven to/from games. Scarlet and Cream all over. Anyone else see that one?
  2. Does everyone know the Budwiser "Real American Genius" commercials (used to be "heroes" instead of "genius" until 9/11)? Just heard one last night that made me think of this thread and laugh my a&& off... "Unathletic sports reporter guy" Timely and true! Of note, I actually had an email exchange going between myself and another reporter on the LA Times staff that had written a particularly good article about our state a while back - not just focused on our football program. He is Dana Parsons, and he is a Nebraska native and UNL class of '71. He says he takes a lot of abuse around the office for it. I just looked on their web site and he's listed in the news section. I've sent him Simers' rant to see if we can renew our exchanges. Unfortunately, I also learned that Dufresne is now the national college football editor , so at least the paper has their a&&hole pecking order correct
  3. Welcome to my world @ Camden Yards, although we just took 2 of 3 from them, and they didn't spoil Cal's day in the spotlight.
  4. Yup. Then run... then pass some more. Bring them on. Never back down from any opponent in any location. We will be in the majority anyway. But I'm not getting my hopes up this year like I did last when ESPN said the same thing. Sorry for being selfish, but the 'Huskers bowling anywhere East of the Mississippi is a blessing for us out here. It sucks that the Big XII is locked into sending its champ to Arizona instead of Florida like it used to be. I'm confused as to what this prediction says about our season, though. Obviously, we aren't conference champs, but with A&M going Cotton (Big XII 2nd place), and Mizzou going Holiday (3rd), and TT going Alamo (4th), does an invitation to this bowl mean we don't finish 2nd, 3rd, or 4th? Or does the at-large bid mean that we can be plucked from any of the other bowls (except BCS)?
  5. Look in the season ticket section.... they sold out immediately also!
  6. Ah, 'tis the season! The time of year Simers and his butt buddy Dufresne turn their combined single-digit intellect towards college football. It just so happens that we get the direct benefit of their drivel because Stevie P decided to schedule the University of Spoiled Children many years ago, and S & D live their non-existent sports lives vicariously through whatever the Troy Boys do - as long as they are winning (see below). But it doesn't mean that if we weren't on the schedule that we would have escaped either one or both of them busting on our team, fans, lifestyle, home state, etc. I have been reading their crap for over 10 years now, and not a year goes by without some slam to us. They, as well as most of the clueless SoCal population, are just jealous because they are NOT fans of anything unless they are successful. Then they become the biggest cheerleaders the team (any team, pick one) has had, until they start to lose again. Why do you think the 3rd largest metropolitan area in the nation doesn't have a pro football team? Why was the Coliseum nearly empty for most of the 90s? The fan base is as fickle as it gets there. Simers and Dufresne just reflect their readership. We, on the other hand, fill the stadium - winning season or not. We stay until the last down - victorous or not. They make fun of that which they can't comprehend. Funny that they don't devote this much effort to exposing the Reggie Bush fiasco. Now THERE'S a college football program that deserves to forfeit wins/bowls/championships!
  7. Isn't there an additional burden to going to a game in Lawrence? all of your room for beer/food is taken up with all the spare tires you have to carry
  8. I'll have to look at these when I get home because the links are to banned web sites at my work, but I can comment on two of the student groups you cite... In 2002 at PSU, we were assaulted (physically), spit on, beer spilled on, etc by students before, during, and after the game. What's more, we had to look at "F**K the Huskers" t-shirts everywhere, since student reps were handing them out at the gate. No, the letters were not changed around. Joe Pa ended up issuing an apology on behalf of the university the week after the game, and the campus promised a "crack down" (whatever that means). I doubt if I'll ever go back if we schedule them again. The Terp basketball fans are NOT looked upon as a shining example of student behavior here in the state. The school has banned Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll Part II" from being played at the games because of the way they added offensive lyrics. Of course, we all knew it wouldn't do any good, because they continue to sing the song anyway - without music. Yes, they are fanatically rowdy, especially when Duke comes to town, but their actions are not viewed in a positive way. I can't comment on our students' enthusiasm, or lack thereof. I can only say that the two examples above should not be used as a benchmark of what a "good" student section is.
  9. I think it all depends on Sam and our receivers. He put up 456 yds vs LSU and over 300 in a 10 pt loss to #1 USC in 2005 before getting injured. Give us that kind of production, plus the home field. Big W! I worry about the familiarity factor, though. USC knows him and his style, weaknesses, etc. from live play. That's a lot different than watching a new QB you'll be facing on film.
  10. Financially is the only way to prove a point to a rogue (if that's what they are) athletic department. Scholarships are one way, but what about the funds from their appearance at the Holiday Bowl? The rest of the conference benefitted, also, so just take OU's portion back and redistribute.
  11. Yes. KSU and NU is a strecth. More like KU and NU. The last 3 games have been heated!! 42 to 12 or whatever it was, is heated? I gotta weigh in here and agree that KU is an up and coming "wannabe" rival. The Fighting Manginos benchmark their season not with how they do against KSU, but how well they perform against us. And 2 years ago they did well enough to break the second longest losing streak in NCAA football history. The year before that, they lost by 6. Last year, they took us to 2OT. That's heated. As for the all time best rivalry - Army-Navy hands down! GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!
  12. THAT SUX! They lose the W, but their opponents don't gain? Oh well
  13. I know that people from all across the east and from the Home State are coming to this one since season tickets were so damn cheap! While we are waiting for our tickets to arrive (WF Athletic Dept said they would be mailed in August), it's time to think of hotel reservations. We have a caravan of about 20 from our group going down Friday (red cars/trucks REQUIRED, thank you!), and want to stay somewhere where we can turn the bar red. Kind of like we did at the Panther HQ hotel a couple of years ago at Pitt. So where is everyone staying?
  14. Unfortunately, that is only a listing of the Alumni Chapter watch sites. I have found that many fans of the Big Red, especially out of state, start unofficial fan clubs of their own and establish their own watch sites. Such was the reason for the birth of C.R.A.B.S. here in Maryland. We started as a mostly military member organization based out of Ft. Meade, and most members didn't want to travel into D.C. on game day to be crammed in a small pub. There is also a perception, correct or not, that certain Alumni associations are snooty and act like they are above the average fan who isn't a grad or can't afford to buy a membership. For the record, the Maryland watch site is Sonoma's Bar & Grill in Columbia, MD. http://www.sonomasbar.com
  15. It's certainly not what it used to be before the name/ownership change, and WDC is looking for a new site. There used to be a watch site in Arlington/Alexandria, but I can't remember where it was now (Damon's?). The only other established watch site in the area is ours (C.R.A.B.S) at Sonoma's Bar & Grill in Columbia, MD.
  16. OK, so OU forefits all of its 2005 wins, including the nailbiter over us. In the "can't do anything about it" category, WE are now elevated to a #3 conference finish that year, and should have gone Holiday vice Alamo (although I wouldn't trade anything for the upset over Blue!). An interesting side benefit to this story, is that our record now jumps from 8-4 to 9-3, and that means our run of consecutive 9-win seasons - one of the many, many records Frank flushed down the toilet - begins a year earlier. Two in a row now!
  17. ...especially for those of us out of the "home" state: In addition to the obligatory license plate frame, university window banner, "Buck the Fuffalos" bumper sticker, window flag, etc., do your best to get a 'Husker-related vanity license plate. If your state doesn't have an on line listing of available number/letter combinations, do like the guy in the ESPN commercial from last year - stand in line and try everything! My current inventory: HUSKERS, BLKSHRT, GOBIGRD, HSKRS I MAN LAW. Game days are for red beer. Period. Bloody Mary mix, tomato juice, whatever you need to make it red DO IT MAN LAW Some comments from previous posts.... "You should never leave a Husker game early, no matter what the score is or what the weather is like." I witnessed most of the visitor's section empty out early when we were getting creamed by PSU in 2002 (and Richie Incognito was pounding the sh#t out of some player on the field), and was PISSED! "if you have a dog, his name shall be Herbie!!!" call me out of touch, but the ONLY Nebraska mascot for me is Harry Husker, not Herbie. (or, for those of you who say there was never a Harry, only a previous version of Herbie, then I'm referring to the previous version). Rough, tough, buff, square jawed, bib overall wearing SOB. Herbie is cute. Nebraska football is NOT cute! My Vietnamese Pot-Bellied pig is named Harriet Husker. "When the Huskers are trailing at halftime you shall take shots of wild turkey and your girlfriend/wife shall perform oral sex on you to summon the gods of the comeback." Sorry, but even if Miss Nebraska was on the couch next to me in nothing but her banner - there is no way I could get "him" up if we are behind at the half.... "Husker football is the only sport to watch on game days" Gotta disagree here. There is no other GAME before our GAME on game day, but I always watch future/potential opponents, such as other Big XII teams and possible bowl foes. Know thy enemy "Must dedicate a portion of their hard drive to nothing but Husker audio, picture and video files." Done, but with an addendum: A significant portion of their video library will be dedicated to 'Husker hightlights. 1971 GOTC, the 1984 Orange Bowl (sniff - thanks for going for the win, T.O.!), the demolishing of the Florida "run & gun" offense, and the even bigger demolition of Peyton Manning & his Heisman hopes. ESPN Classic in the fall and my VHS to DVD conversion system for old tapes is my savior! "With addendum: Kirk is a pansy" Trev could kick Kirk's ass. Come back, Trev! And please, Lee, DON'T pick us to win MAN LAW "For all non-conference games, we cheer for the Big 12." Nope. CU being "oh fer" September last year was golden! NEVER root for them, and only root for other Big XII teams IF 1) we don't have them coming up on the schedule (would you rather face a 5-0 KU team or an 0-5?) or, 2) have already beaten them or, 3) they are playing in a bowl to bring stature to the conference
  18. Thanks for the email notification, Blackshirt. I've passed it on to C.R.A.B.S. and the WDC chapter of the Alumni Association. Being a "local" game to us, I know there are a lot of potential donors in our groups as we were planning to saturate the game, just as we had @ PSU and Pitt in previous years. And even though the other Big Red in this area (University of Maryland) is playing down there later in the year and we could have made a killing on reselling them to locals, I'm sure most will "play it forward" and donate. I know I will. Now, as for the UofMD alum that I had agreed to sell my tix to, I wonder if he will be satisfied with the WF 2006 ACC Champion poster I got in the mail the other day as a season ticket holder.....
  19. you have no idea what it's like out here after their demise..... and what's worse is that now the defending national champ women's team has prematurely spit the bit too. black day in the Free State and THIS is how they want to model the end of the season in football?!?!??!?!!?!?!?!? no freakin' way!
  20. Hi! My name is Greg, and I'm the unofficial "mouthpiece" for a group of 'Husker fans in the MD/DC/PA/WV/VA/DE area called C.R.A.B.S. which stands for Chesapeake Region Affiliated Bugeater Society. We have about 50 members, most concentrated around the Ft. Meade, MD area, where the group got its start, but also on ships at sea and in combat zones overseas. We have game watch parties at Sonoma's Bar & Grill in Columbia, and they have been very, very good to us. We caravan to any games in our area, and have been blessed with some good trips lately. We will be out in force in September down in North Carolina. If you live in this region, shoot me a PM and I'll add you to our email roster. If you find yourself in the area for business or pleasure, we would love to meet you.
  21. 1) How long have you been a member of Husker Nation? since daddy's little swimmer met mom's big bad egg - 49 years and counting! 2) What/who led you to The Nation? being conceived somewhere in the Arlington area about did it 3) Where are you from originally? Benkelman, Dundy County dammit! 4) Where do you live now? Frederick, Maryland 5) Favorite Husker memory? Dean Steinkuhler showing up at the Houston Oilers training camp in San Angelo, TX in the summer of '87 when I was stationed there. He signed my Navy Chief's initiation book, even though "civilians" aren't supposed to. took a lot of crap for that one, but I'm proud as hell to have it in there now. 6) Worst Husker memory? Watching the '84 Orange Bowl at oh-dark-thirty in southern Spain at the base club, and the missed conversion for the championship 7) Number of home games attended? Not a single one. Can you believe it? 8) Number of away games attended? 4 on the East Coast since settling here, and too many to count in Boulder (closer to where I grew up than Lincoln!) when we used to invade Folsom Field every other year 9) Favorite Husker memorabilia/apparel? A signed piece of the old turf - winningest turf in football history, and the football signed by the Heisman trifecta of Rogers, Rozier, and Crouch all in one place at one time. 10) Favorite place to watch a Husker game? (section in Memorial, bar, friends house etc.) Sonomas Bar & Grill in Columbia, MD - official Chesapeake Region Affiliated Bugeater Society (C.R.A.B.S.) watch spot 11) Favorite all time player? Mean Dean 12) WCO or Option? Option down their throat all day 13) Stevie Pederson or Billy Byrne? Stevie brought 'Husker football to the "other" coast, so I have to give him props. We have had the pleasure of Penn State and Pitt so far, Wake this year, VaTech in two years, and Tennessee in 4. Way to go, Steve! 14) Lil Red or Herbie Husker? Herbie! Old school, man! 15) Favorite Husker play? Fumblerooskie, of course 16) Favorite game-day beverage? A Red One, Red Man, Red Baron, or whatever you want to call beer and bloody mary mix 17) How did you find HuskerBoard? (referral source) I think it was when I established the C.R.A.B.S. MySpace page and I was doing a search for other 'Husker fan pages to add to my friends list.
  22. I'd like to thank the board for notifying me that they were on sale. I checked about 10 days ago, with no word on when football tix would go on sale this year, and didn't have my reminder set up to check again until 3/1. Guess it really would have been too late by then! Pitt tix didn't go on sale until well into April, so I wasn't expecting anything this soon. I got a block of 10 yesterday in the "orange" section, and they were snapped up by other C.R.A.B.S. members by that night, with others waiting. So I go back this morning to get more, and they are now sold out. The red section is on the other side of the stadium (home side), so your best bet is to pop for the $190 for the gold section and select "section 13" which is closest to the home folk. With Maryland going down there, I know we won't have any problems selling the rest. I also did a search of motels in the area, and there is one right down the street from the stadium, but would like to hear from others that are going where they are going to stay. The university is kind of out in the middle of nowhere - quite a trip from downtown. Any thoughts? Look forward to seeing everyone! For other "Right" coasters.... enjoy this one, because tix to Va Tech and UT in the coming years will be much tougher to come by
