  1. I don't like it at all. I doubt I will live to see another Oklahoma game. Its maybe someone what of an age thing, growing up in the 60s and since, there was the football season and the Oklahoma game. All the other games together didn't mean nearly as much as playing OU. I understand the move to the Big 10, why it maybe had to be, and its probably for the best, but I will miss the Big 12, although it was not as good as the Big 8.

    Jim Tressel

I suppose thats possible. Remember about 20 years ago Oklahoma and Georgia sued the NCAA over tv rights and won. Not long after that both schools were on probation from the NCAA.
  3. Since it sounds like Ohio State will not get hit that hard by the NCAA. Whats to stop them from hiring Jim Tressel back after this season?
  4. Site that has pages on college football history College Football History Link
  5. Without question. No one..... And I mean no one comes close.... Please don't shoot me, but imo the 71 NU team was even better. You are correct sir, 1971 was bettter.
  6. 2001 Miami was a very good team, especially on defense.but keep in mind they didn't even score an offensive td vs an 8-4 Boston College team (a tipped pass returned for a td late in the 4th q. when it looked like BC would take the lead) and barely beat an 8-4 V Tech team by 2 when the V Tech reciever dropped a double extra point pass. Also Miami did not play anything close to the Husker running game.

LOL, well its just that white shoes make you faster
  8. The other angle is that you could also say that he was just looking to get a head coaching job as opposed to just getting out of town. Seeing how most coordinators look for head coaching jobs which would be the next step up on the ladder, but I'm sure you know that zoogies. Looking back at the book again, Osborne said he gave himself until he was 35 to get a head coaching job or he would maybe go to teaching full time instead of coaching. He was born in 1937 and Devaney picked him to succeed him in 1972 so he just made it. I believe Devaney talked him out of the Augustana job. As far as going to Colorado in 1978, he said he thought maybe winning 9+ games a year might be appreciated more there than in Nebraska. Younger fans might not realize how different the feelings were for Osborne in the 70s compared to his last 5 years at NU. In his first 6 seasons vs OU he was 1-6 (counting Orange Bowl - the rematch with OU in 78 really got him down) In those 6 seasons he shared 2 Big 8 titles with OU, 1975 - NU lost to OU 35-10 and 78 when the Huskers finally beat the Sooners 17-14 but lost the rematch in the Orange Bowl. NU lost to MIzzu after OU that season , had they won that game they could have played for the NC. All this following Devaney who most Nebraska fans thought was the second coming. Bob had won a NC 2 of the 3 previous seasons and a Big 8 Champ. 3 of the previous 4, when T.O. took over. It was a lot like when Solich followed Osborne. T.O. also mentions fishing as a plus for CU. At the time he would not of had a problem finding Nebraskans who would of been happy to help him move.

    uniforms

No, the Huskers wore white shoes (as did most teams) from around the mid 70s through most of the 80s. check the link Past Uniforms (down the page)

    uniforms

Might be an age thing (I'm old) I like the uniforms, but I could live without the red pants on the road - I know most people don't like the all white. BUT WE NEED THE WHITE SHOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Big Tens record vs the SEC isn't very good. The SEC for the most part has white shoes, the Big 10 black. Its obvious what we need to dominate the Big 10
  11. I know there was a post about this a few days ago, but I'm getting old and slow. The interest in Michigan State from that post was reported at the time. (Also check out the link below) I went through some books that T.O. wrote etc. Here are some coaching possibilities that would have effected Nebraska football a great deal. First of all starting with Bob Devaney - from the book Devaney by Bob Devaney and Friends He says that he was contacted several times for coaching jobs (while at Nebraska) with other colleges but the only one he considered was Miami in 1965 - think about that a second He visited there while NU was preparing for the Orange Bowl vs. Alabama. I would imagine he would have taken all his staff with him including T.O. One of the quotes that was supposedly from him when he turned it down, was that his wife just bought some new snow tires for her car. Devaney also mentions several pro head coaching offers. The one he says he was tempted the most with was the Los Angles Rams, again in 1965 He didn't think he could go to LA and check it out at the time because NU was in Miami preparing for the Orange Bowl and they didn't wait until after it, and hired someone else. He also mentions a couple offers from the Broncos, and talking to the Steelers. Bob says he came close to taking the New England Patriot job right after he retired from Nebraska (1972) Osborne was already going to be the Huskers head coach so it would not of involved him. There was also a petition started after the 1968 season to have Devaney fired, which would have almost certainly meant T.O. and the rest of the staff. As for Osborne.- from the book More Than Winning (Not from this book but Osborne would have been fired had the Huskers not beat Texas Tech in the bowl game after 1976 season.) Interviewed for U South Dakota head coaching job 1968, they hired Joe Salem instead. Offered Augustana College HC, almost took it but turned it down around 1969 Applied for Texas Tech HC job after 1969 season, they hired Jim Carlin After the 1978 season went to Colorado thinking he was "reasonably sure" he would be taking the job, but changed his mind. He says there were other contacts over the years (book was published in 1985) one coming from a "southern school" with a fine football program. He says he was contacted by a very wealthy oil man who was an alumnus of the school, but was not interested even though the money would have been double that at NU Tom says the only pro job he was offered that interested in was the Seattle Seahawks, doesn't name the year. Now this next one you will have to trust me on. About 10 years or so ago I exchanged emails with a sports reporter who said there was contact between Minnesota and T.O. before 1992 season. (don't remember which newspaper) You have to remember this is when Bill Byrne came to Nebraska and there was at least some speculation that he might make a head coaching change. Hard to believe now but at the time Tom had taken over a program that had won NC's in 2 of the previous 3 years before he became head coach, and he had not won one in his 19 season at NU, and the Huskers had slipped a bit in 90-91. Minnesota hired Jim Wacker starting with the 92 season so that checks out. Finally there was a rumor that Tom was checking out Houston job after leaving Nebraska but the link below says he was just there as a consultant. CLICK HERE Oh and in Devaneys book he talks about how he Mike Cogran and 2 players ended up over night in jail in Denver, after a game there while he was HC had Wyoming. Imagine that happening today.
  12. Came across this site that seems to list teams and the years they have been on probation. It lists NU for 1986 which I think had something to do with players giving tickets to people that were not on aproved list. Don't know what 1983 was for. Also thought NU had little trouble in early to mid 70 when they let redshirt players suit up for bowl games, but don'e see it listed. My link
  13. Got to have white shoes. We would dominate the Big 10 in white shoes.
  14. For what its worth, Crouch was voted team captian by his team mates, Tommie was not. IMO Phlilips and others getting trouble and all the bad press cost Tommie the Heisman, even then if they had the vote after the bowl games he probably would have won.
  15. Anyone have a photo of T.F. in his high school uniform? I remember seeing one somewhere, have stacks of books and magazines and looked online but can't find it. One of those things you can't find when you want it. Thanks.
  16. [ It sucks that pharmas can't get behind something that's not profitable, but that's how the free market works. The American Cancer Society takes in a lot of money, some of which I believe is supposed to go to research. Like I said in my original post one of the drugs the doctor wanted to give me when I had cancer is not available in the USA, because there is no money in the making of it. But it is available in Europe, maybe they have some wild notion that lives might be worth something in comparison to money..
  17. I've survived cancer twice. There are so many types of cancer one drug might not cure all of them. But I do know that my doctor wanted to give a drug this last time I had cancer, but the drug is not available in the USA because he said it was to cheap to make and since there was no money in it it was not available here. (it is in Europe). There was also a story on 60 Minutes awhile back about radio waves and metal particles that sounded promising.
  18. Younger fans might not be aware, but for at least the 70s and for some until the mid 90s success, T.O. would have been shown the road by a lot of fans. Especially after he went to Colorado and interviewed for the job there. There were many fans who would have been happy to help him move once it came out he talked to the Buffs. and I probably would have been one of them. He was known as the coach who couldn't win the big game. Probably the only thing that saved him in the 70s was his overall w/l record was good and he won most of his bowl games (and Bob Devaaney).. The long losing streak in bowls didn't start until the mid 80s. There was even some speculation he might be fired when Bill Byrne's was hired as AD prior to 1992 season. I've always thought that if Turner Gill did not come to NU and went to OU like he originally planned, Tom might not have lasted. With Gill NU was undefeated in the Big 8 for 3 years and should have won 2 or even 3 NCs (Gill missed the last couple games his soph year with injury). He was 28-2 as started and NUs only 3 time first team All Conference QB Of course NU fans started a petition to get Devaney fired (and one for Charlie McBride)
  19. The Bobfather, no doubt. When Devaney came to Nebraska, the Huskers were arguably one of the worst football programs in the country. He Immediately made them a winner. Hired a young guy named Tom Osborne, made him OC and then handpicked him to follow him as head coach. Without Bob there is no T.O., For those of you to young to remember - for at least the first 10 years, and somewhat until his last 5 years that T.O. was head coach, people would say "he's no Devaney". Tom came within 1 game of being fired and was almost run out of town when he went to Boulder to check out the CU head coaching job.
  20. I really think it will take more than a spring scrimmage to see how good Carnes is. I remember when Cody Green was an incoming freshman and people were calling for him to start before he ever was on campus. As far as Martinez he had the best year ever for a Husker Freshman QB and that was with an injury for half the season, Watson calling plays, and receivers who at times couldn't catch a football. If he had been healthy all year and had T.O. calling plays with the oline of the mid 90s how do you think he would have done? I hope they are both 100% and we are lucky to have them both. Remember 1994 when Frazier had blood clots and Berrenger was able to step in?

    Bowl Games

Well, thats the point of the page, that southern teams have an advantage because bowl games are played in the south. I agree if bowl were played in northern stadiums it would make a big difference. Check out the additons to the page Click Here

  23. I agree, he had by FAR the best year for a Husker QB EVER and people arn't happy with him.
  24. This may have been done before, if so sorry for the repeat. Don't see where the Big 10 has been better than the Big 8 - 12 Check the link. CLICK HERE
  25. AMEN!! I don't think some people realize how much more he did than any Freshman QB ever did before.
