With all the rumbling this week about OU and Texas in the Red River Shootout, the game of the day tomorrow promises to be the continued rebirth of Husker football's dominance in the Big 12... TBS may have been there for the lowest moment in Husker football history last season, but their second trip to Lincoln this season will mark flaunt the Phoenix known as Husker football has arisen again. Spent a bunch of time looking for Chow's playbook...no avail...but I certainly have a better understanding of WCO, post-multiple shift. Motion might be a killer for us, but to Cally's credit the movement uses up more play clock, shortening the game our defense must currently contribute energy and enthusiasm enough to buoy the whole state of Nebraska.

I agree USC is running a more complex offense, but let's remember that Pete Carroll had a .500 season or two in there before things got better. Heck, SC came to the LV Bowl when Leinart was a frosh. Nebraska isn't USC, doesn't have USC's players, and USC's coaches, take the defense and exploit what they see, not what they wished they'd see, so you can't compare the success of USC to the mediocrity of Nebraska's current offensive attack. The fact that they run a similar offense gives us no where to go with the argument beyond talent. The Trojans have the best talent in the country this season, on the field and on the sidelines. How they do it, I am not sure. Don't follow them very closely although I am beginning to see more, now that I don't have to endure a non-Nebraska Big 12 game of the week any more. Let's look at both teams in their last two games. SC has put up 1354 total offense yards and scored 133 points in two blowout victories over Hawaii and Arkansas. They were penalized 13 times for 120 yards over the two game stretch. Nebraska has 502 total yards and 38 points in the last two games. The Huskers were penalized 21 times for 177 yards. Statistically execution using the offense is the issue. Not sure we can point at playcalling yet, since penalties take you onto a different play selection chart. Assuming that the penalties are against our offensive units, the gameplan needs to be developed more extensively in long yardage situations and practice reps given to promote a feel for the looks that we need to have success in sustaining drives in long yardage situations has to grow. Our coaching staff knows what will work...they just need the players to execute against the defense without getting penalized for their actions. Our running game and passing game need to complement each other and find weaknesses in the opponent. Isn't that why we watch film, film, film, to see what another team has that we can take advantage of? Cally has said that we will take what we want, and that is certainly true, but averaging 250 yards against non-conference competition doesn't promote the confidence most of us desire in a Husker offense. Hopefully the BYE week serves us well. Heaven knows, that ISU and TT are ready to take us to task again. Let's not be embarrassed again, Bill. JUST SAY NO! Couple of things-didn't get to see the game YET, but will soon as the video is up...can't believe that Cally isn't "seeing" how his offense is sputtering. Someone should be yelling into the headset about the rushing thing working very well. With the success, more than one time over a series of three-four plays, of a running game the passing lanes open up and defenses soften. Damn the script. If Cally can't realize what is wrong with the play calling, his statistics NERD should be fired and replaced by someone who is NOT committed to pass first. Now I live in Vegas and I have no clue what the weather pattern has been like in Lincoln in the past four and a half years since moving, but 25 years of living in Nebraska forecasts that wind, rain, and the white stuff, SNOW, aren't that far away. Not to mention sub-50 degree game day conditions, etc. The running game sets a big precedent for the success of a WCO, Bill said so himself as we worked through his first spring practices last year. We have the studs and Pitt couldn't stop Ross unless something broke down. Execution is what it all comes down to, and someone, O-line are you listening, isn't quite doing the job. Line coaches need to find someone to do the job, and all will be 42-6 in Huskerland again. A week off before the next game will give them time to analyze. Maybe the computer geeks in the FB office will dust off Madden 06 and get a clue. WCO doesn't win there either. Again, can't wait to "see" the game, Huskereb Didn't a famous Nebraska football coach say at one time that "success is a journey, not a destination!"? I think I remember TO having that manta through some nearly successful seasons in the late 70s and the 80s. GO Huskers!

But Val's is a great pizza, if you ask my wife...she's a born and bred Nebraskan. I still hanker for a Chicago style pie, but haven't found one worthy here in Vegas as of yet...terrible isn't it, four years in a city and I can't find a decent pie...but I am looking. This post will obviously date me a tad bit, but here goes anyway! That's right, game day always begins the night before (after high school FB games) at Barry's until closing...then in the hotel room with crazy old people who know how to handle the hard stuff (alcohol that is) and then an early morning Bloody Mary to quell an unsteady head. Head over to the University Bookstore for some shopping and gawking...Usually hit Val's buffet before the game if I wasn't tailgating and showing off the mad culinary skills I've developed over the years...I think they stole the "Brat Tub" from me, without credit even.... Strolling the campus with the Big Red Faithful, being there when the band does there thing...the Tunnel Walk (a late addition in my gameday experience-but definitely the most thrilling...)March Grandioso (?) is a fave...then the game food and assorted section kept beverages (back in the day you passed whatever anti-freeze you brought around to protect us all from the elements.) After the game, Misty's is the best, up in Havelock or downtown...Don't forget the Haymarket and what was the name of the bar headed down 10th or 14th Street in the 80s? (Age is definitely getting to me now!) I miss the atmosphere...UNLV Rebel fans don't have the class of the Husker faithful...that's for sure. Talk about being unfocused...I didn't give my preference...Without a doubt it is the stadium Runza. The dog comes in handy and, back in the day, the lawyer from Gothenburg (Steve ???) used to toss em to me and I'd put my money in the wrapper and toss it back to him. (That couldn't happen anywhere else, someone would take the money and run. In Nebraska, we would all chase the thug down like an OU tailback and dogpile 'em like only the Blackshirts could!) We even have a gameday tradition here in the Southwest, carried over from watching and listening to the games when we couldn't attend. We check the gameday temperature in Lincoln, and if it's below 45, my lovely wife makes her soupy chili and I make the beans and peppers for my special addition. Over 45 we usually make Runzas the morning of and enjoy them like we are at the stadium...We get a good 4 1/2 hours of Husker radio out here courtesy of Al Mackowitz and crew... Kind of miss every game being televised like it seems to be back home in Nebraska. I hate the weather though, so being out in our sutry 60 to 80 degree temp in the fall ain't that bad...almost (I said ALMOST) beats sitting in the north end zone, freezing one's buttocks off during a Kansas game or Colorado contest. I like the new turf design. A suggestion: How 'bout red lines on the 20 and goal line. That way we can go with white end zones with red lettering and see how inbounds all those cleatfooted receivers are when they catch the plethora of short passes for TDs this fall. Only 47 days left. Listen I only celebrated because I beat the spread, pissed off the Okies who would have won my money, and that's all. I have mentioned this fact before, yet I must reiterate it. It hurts to see us play so poorly. That I was jubilant over a 27-point loss to the damn Sooners shows me where we have fallen to this season also. I, though, am not ready to keel over and die; the Husker nation will have a season to celebrate soon enough and Oklahoma, of all teams, knows that fact all too well. Not so long ago they were posting a 500-season. It didn't take them long to revive their program. Of course, they had to get rid of John Blake to do it. (Blake's a good assistant, but I didn't think he was head coach material. He can recruit and teach his position well.) Haven't heard any news on Ross. The Corn Coast O has been very dependent on his legs this past six weeks. Let's hope I never celebrate a 27-point Husker loss anytime soon. H-Reb

What do you call people in Nebraska?? For the most part, great fans with class and respect. I took a look at a sooner message board before the game, and all those knuckleheads could do is make stupid remarks and joke about us and our coaches. No intelligent talk about anything, just a bunch crap spewing from a bunch of idiots who only wish they had the class and great reputation Nebraska fans have. But I am ok with it because when we do take them down....and it will be sooner than later, it will be all so sweet. Yes, BC should not have said it, but I am sure glad he did. This rivalry got a brand new blood line baby! Frankly it doesn't matter where you are from. Callahan will be publicly reprimanded by the U but I for one applaud his honesty. Not so sure about the profanity, but that's why he gets the big bucks. Oklahoma fans have been classless for as long as I remember, so :up Even if they win a championship again, they haven't learned anything along the way that makes them worthy of more words. :up We had our share of orange throwing moments in the past, however this time it was the so-called Ruffnecks doing the duty. Who would know how to spell lose better than a Callahan apologist? We all appreciate the clarification. I checked out your Cosgrove post...I'm glad you're at least beginning to see the light about him. Although I don't know why it took those stats to convince you that he's a complete idiot. Like it has been said numerous times, all you have to do is compare the intensity of the defense this year with last. Essentially the same players. I know Williams is gone, but the secondary is the same, arguably faster without Ricketts. Callahan apologist, or 3rd grade graduate? You make the call. And I have lost(past tense of lose) my patience with morons trying to make arguments and misspelling simple words CONTINUALLY. Christ, it's like talking to my 7 year old niece online. DJR-life will be okay. Maybe not today, or even November 29th, but someday it will be better. As for spelling, some have it and others do not. I, for one, was elated to see Jon K. ramble down the field. I, for two, was elated to see them try it again on the next play. I, for three, pumped my fist in the air and shouted to Devaney above when Bill trotted out Dyches and kicked that shutout into Stoops, Venables, and Pellinis grills on the final play. From the look of it, most of our secondary look like they want to play two hand touch football (like the Kennedys) instead of Blackshirt wack 'em and smack 'em tackle. Cos is committed to his program and most of these guys will be gone within two years. They need to buy in to the system and produce some results or some freshman or sophomore recruited by Cos will replace them next season. Then we will see some coverage and skill in play. Zones cover weaknesses, and man shows weakness. This year we have observed that weakness in action every weak( , week) haven't we. Hopefully Cos let them down gently, but if they continue to defy and attempt to shove or touch people down, get some freshman to burn his shirt and hit somebody good-that will create respect from opposing WRs and TEs. The truth hurts sometimes, like we need to be told that on this board! Reality is, produce or the boss will fire you in the board room. Go Trump!

Benard says "pro and college is totally different which is why I don't know why big pederson got callahan." Well could it be that NU wanted to move itself into the 21st century in football; yes is your answer. I know the record sucks, but do you think the exhalted Frankie could have beaten OU, TT and others? The emotion Pellini brought to the defense has been sorely missed, I will grant you that. Can Cosgrove create it, the jury is out, but I know he can recruit talent (until it got drubbed by MSU's Spartans today that is.) Benard finishes by saying " He can't coach in the college ranks, of course he couldn't coach in the pros either so who knows." Hmmm, babysitting a bunch of 30-something washouts, and 20-something egoheads who wouldn't know character if a crack dealer was selling it isn't my idea of coaching, and it wasn't Bill's. He called the Raiders out and the losers, they are still losing this year, lost their "con"fidence in him according to Charlie Woodson. Bill faced his problem like a man, just like he has this season. He told us early and often that this season would be an adventure, and it has been. Let's see if you could take a team recruited to run the I and spread formation with the QB running as its first option and have it throw the ball (see Bill tried this.) Norvell and Callahan have both realized that the talent needed sometime to learn the CCO so they have relied more on the run in the past several weeks. Get another recruiting class and spring season under the belt and we will see a much different program and a return to success next season. As it is, don't we stand a chance of going to the Big 12 title game anyway? Not bad, since Frankie missed out on a few. Nope, count me as one who likes having Callahan out there on our sideline. The future is about to arrive.
