  1. Translation: Osborne ran the ball a lot. And he ran it out of the triple option. And Nebraska was really good at rushing. Therefore, Nebraska can only be great on offense by running the triple option and greatly limiting the passing game. This is what taking crazy pills feels like. I just dont understand this whole thing. In an every changing and ever evolving sport, yet where the simple basics will always remain key, and coaches and programs are chasing that next great nuance to get them the advantage, and so many places take pride in this. but we. We husker fans, due to failures recently and our stupidity to blame those failures on simply changes in philosophy, are so hot to claim that the OLD way is the ONLY way. it's stupid. Oklahoma did not win a National title in 2000 and umpteen conference titles since using the wishbone. And so many are quick to forget. This program went to sh#t BEFORE Callahan and the philisophical shift. It was our reluctance to change and roll with evolution within the sport to begin with that put us behind. Not Callahan and his attempt to modernize, both football stuff and recruiting.
  2. when i said many of TO's concepts are being used still today, it was in reference to nationwide. Not Nebraska. You dont know as much about football or reading comprehension as you like to claim you do. good bye.
  3. Its easy to get playing time when you are a back-up to Zatcheka, Graham, and Taylor and can get put in the game when you are up 50-0 by second quarter. he completely missed the point i was trying to make. instead went all fact check-which is fine, i do it too-with the random names of instate kids i threw out in making the point. So admitted my wrongs. weird. the problem lied in that i completely lost track of what the debate was even regarding. LOL.
  4. I finally put CM on ignore. I havent used this ignore thing in a while. simply because when someone else quotes that person you can still see that. But i figure with him being ignored by so many, this wont be as much of an issue. And I like to argue. I cant help it. it's enjoyment for me. but 4 others on my ignore list have all been banned. LOL. Maybe i'm not so stupid afterall.
  5. good. I'm glad you did that. Now watch how this works. This is a good lesson for you. "I was mistaken. My bad". Still. What the hell are you talking about? Is this another CM'd topic? That's the point. I'm throwin sh#t out becuase any discussion involving you, no one knows what the hell is even going on. I guess I'm the stupid for trying to debate you. Im the one that ends up looking silly. No wonder youre on so many ignore lists.
  6. What are you talking about? Most of your post is tenuous at best, but the bolded is pure nonsense. im talking about home grown kids who go to the program and become very very good players after 4 years of development. The point is that that's not happening becuase everyone is putting just as much into development as nebraska is. tenuous. LOL. only cuz the intelligence and facts disprove your stance. typical cm. Now what outmoded principles are you speaking of? There are still several concepts that Osborne was using 25 years ago that are still in use and seen as innovative today. RPO for one. it's little things. Just cause teams arent lining up in spread I or 12 Ace doesnt mean the concepts are different. Or are you talking about the talent factor? Because remember. for every Schlesinger, we had Lawrence Phillips and Ahman Green. For every Terry Connealy we had a Jason Peter and Grant Wistrom. Youre the one that started this merry go round by saying, exactly, that tailoring a system to draw top talent from California was loodicrus. So i guess, after your backpedaling and run around in all this, WHAT THE f#*k ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
  7. i'll bite and go down this road again. The incredible advances and discoveries Nebraska made in S&C, nutrition, psychology had much more to do with the program "getting over the top" than any sort of resiliency in his X's and O's system. Osborne did not change much of his offense. But a lot of changes were made in regards to the program. That atmosphere of the college game has changed. There are very few secrets anymore. Everyone invests in S&C. Everyone has highly calibrated nutrition plans. Even down to position-specific (not just sport specific) nutrition and training. Leadership council and psychological investments. This is where Nebraska revolutionized the game and went from just not quite having enough to being on top with their status quo of talent and scheme. The next Matt Hoskinson or Joel Wilks is not walking through the door today Why? because after 4 years in this program theyre still behind in development. Because the other guys have been at the advantage of the same amount and style of training. Theyre not "gaining" anything like they were at Nebraska 20 years ago. Nebraska doesnt have these insane advantages anymore. Now, if you wanna debate that we cant get the talent, and that we're preverbially screwed, so be it. it really is a legit debate. I personally dont think we are. I think we can be like a Michigan St and have runs of really good years 2-4 in a row then have a couple down rebuilding years. It's not far fetched to think we're capable of that. No. i dont think we'll ever be in a re-load state like Bama/Ohio St/etc.
  8. Osborne was using RPO and Kent Pavelka was literally calling it that because that's what it was 25 years ago.
  9. that's true lanlord. Wisconsins offense is very efficient in playing within their team's strengths. Like i said. not doing anything to lose the game. the 09 comparison was simply that their defense is, by far, their strong suit. And they ride it throughout the whole game. Their whole offensive gameplan is based on the fact that they know their defense will not give up much, so they dont have to take risks offensively to press the issue.
  10. We had that in 2009 but still managed to lose 4 and theyve lost 2. by 7 each. we were also 4-3 at one point in that season. two of our losses were rather ugly in games we shoulda won (tech, iowa st) The point is, Wisonsin has an incredible defense. And their offense, while not doing much to win games, also doesnt do anything to lose them either.
  11. It's because their defense is absolutely incredible. Even the worst of offenses can come up with a play or two a game that gets them some points. Their incredible defense puts them in a position where that's all they need. i.e. against Nebraska. Against Ohio St and michigan it just wasnt QUITE enough. Theyre '09Nebraska'ish. You can go a long way with excellent defense and lackluster O. Doing the same the other way around is much much more difficult. https://www.google.com/search?q=texas+tech+vs+iowa+st&oq=texas+tech+vs+iowa+st&aqs=chrome..69i57.6215j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 playing optional defense is all fun and games until you face a random opponent who decides to put effort into it.
  12. That game was full buzzsaw theory. Full effect. Just wash your hands of it and move on. it's not at all a true reflection of either team. And it happens. A lot.
  13. Texas's behavior is putting them in a position that no high up coach will wanna touch that job with ten foot pole. texas has been passed up by Baylor, TCU, even Houston, Ok St, etc. Texas is not longer the king of Texas. Texas is not longer the automatic destination in the state of Texas for top talent. The SEC now has a solid footprint in Texas. Texas's entitled behavior as program is putting them farther and farther behind. it's almost like us or what Michigan has gone through. Embrace your past. Dont live in it. And work for the future.
  14. Fwiw, a poster on another message board who apparently watches practice said that Fyfe is by far more athletic than either O'Brien or Lee. Said Lee is a "statue" iirc. heresay. and that's fine. It's also a result of our judgment of whether a qb is "athletic" being clouded by the fact that are last two qb's, spanning 7 seasons have basically been running backs/safeties/athletes playing the position. So we know have this assumption that anything short of essentially a running back playing qb is a statue and cant move or run at all. Im not gonna argue that Fyfe is more athletic that Obrien at this point. Because Fyfe isnt exactly unathletic in his own right. is he a Martinez athletic? No. Is he Armstrong athletic? No. Is he athletic enough? Well, yeah. We saw it in instances on saturday. His athleticism is enough to be serviceable when needed. The qb's of our near future are not going to be read optioning and running a zone run system. Again. folks at practice that claim, but i trust my own eyes. this isnt merely a statue. http://www.hudl.com/profile/2536518/patrick-obrien I would compare Obrien athletically to a Joe Ganz. I think he could be sneaky athletic Now. what ive seen of Tanner Lee, he's the one that I would agree is probably closest to a "statue" that we have. There's not much going on in terms of true running threat there. But it doesnt mean he wont have the feet to move around enough within the pocket and have the qualities needed to deliver the ball on time.
  15. This is what I'm hoping for. A mobile QB who can scramble to avoid pressure/buy time in the pocket as well as execute some designed runs during the course of a game. I can only imagine how potent our offense would be with a strong running game and a QB who can hit guys in stride to allow them some YAC. That's probably my biggest knock on TA was his inability to hit guys in stride allowing them YAC. yeah. but it's not even about scrambling. Simple pocket presence and the ability to just move withing the pocket, step up in the pocket, to buy the additional fraction of a second needed till the read he's on comes open. Does Tommy Armstrong have good pocket presence? No. When's the last time he felt the pressure and stepped up in the pocket and delivered a good crisp ball, not off his back foot, on time and on target? And this goes all the way back to high school. It's his style. it's not bad. Theres more than one way to skin it. But he's not a good fit for this system. he's always been a run and chuck. When pressure comes, he doesnt side step, avoid, stay on his progression, step up and throw the ball on time. When pressure comes, he immediately bails and scrambles and the routes are not even given a chance. it works in some systems. Not this one. it's only a matter of fit. This is not a bash tommy thing. it's a simple and easy observation of confidence moving forward after seeing Saturday to calm the panic of this laughable "what ever will we do without the running qb" thing. Cuz if that qb is considerably better than Tommy in accuracy and pocket awareness, and is able to execute the things these coaches are comfortable with, then what's the difference? Also very good point above though. This is also all heavily reliant on oline play. Until that gets where it needs to be, we will remain stagnant on offense.
  16. ermahgahd. a tall white qb. WHAT WILL WE DO WITHOUT THE OPTION!!? I dont know. My first guess would be probably hit 9 of 10 of these 5 yard crossing routes that are running free for potentional 20 yard gains umpteen times a game. That would be a start. jesus.
  17. If POB's high school ability and success were to proportionately transpire into his college career, he will be exponentially more successful as a pure qb than Armstrong ever wouldve. Just watch his film. he not merely a "statue". Jeebus kriest. enough of the statue crap already. It's not Sage Rosefells standing back there. These guys are athletes now. Then can move around plenty enough.
  18. Then what the hell point are you making CM? Cuz Riley/Langsdorf arent changing either. Theyre recruiting and being open about utilizing a system that they always have used. This is why we're all confused about your point, or lack of. Theyre not tailoring anything either. I'm sorry, but the podunk walk on 8 man football studs out in the panhandle that had umpteen catches for a bazillion yards isnt gonna carry us in their offense.
  19. Just more Baylor people doing Baylor things.

    1. NUance

      NUance

Dumb move by the Baylor Assoc AD. But arrested? Come on 'Murica, toughen up.

    2. I AM FOOT FOOT

      I AM FOOT FOOT

Maybe sell Waco back to Mexico and build a wall around it.one of the most f'd up cities around.

  20. fify 1st back to back 0 turnover games since the Solich era, I read on twitter. Well I was combining turnovers and penalties to show our relative error-freeness. No turnovers against Minny, but there were 8 penalties for 81 yards. Ryker dodged a pick six, as Tommy has done more than a few times. We're a little more disciplined as well as a little more lucky this year. Sure.. I'm not arguing with you in any way. I just wanted to point out, in addition to the maryland game, that for the first time in however long....
  21. Let me go thru this by memory, going off last week's rankings. Bama-dual threat Ohio State-dual threat Michigan-statue (now injured) Clemson-dual threat Washington-pocket passer, although pretty mobile Lousville-dual threat Wisconsin-statue Oklahoma-dual threat Penn State-dual threat Colorado-dual threat That looks like a pretty heavy lean to a more mobile QB among the top teams. You're stretching the "dual threat" with some of those. Penn State/McSorely = 167/304 and 2600 yards passing.....349 yards rushing for a 2.9 yards per carry average Oklahoma/Mayfield = 222/311 and 3381 yards passing ......138 yards rushing for a 1.9 yards per carry average They might not be "statues" but they aren't QBs that are going to win with their legs. this is the point im trying to make. the line between a dual threat/running and a pocket passer/statue is so clouded anymore. This isnt the 90's. It's not Peyton Manning vs Scott Frost. it's not Tommie Frazier vs Frank Costa or Danny Weurfal. It's not Eric Crouch vs Ken Dorsey. Quarterbacks are athletes now. This generation of qb has developed and grew up under the training and ideal that being able to move around and be somewhat service, at the very least, with their legs is a must. So this assumption that guys cant and wont move around just because they throw a nice ball, them days are done.
  22. Let me go thru this by memory, going off last week's rankings. Bama-dual threat (this is the first year of a dual threat qb at Bama in this run. Theyve stayed at the top with passers, or "statues (LOL)". Ohio State-dual threat Michigan-statue (now injured) pocket passer Clemson-dual threat Washington-pocket passer, although pretty mobile Lousville-dual threat Wisconsin-statue pocket passer Oklahoma-dual threat Penn State-dual threat Colorado-dual threat That looks like a pretty heavy lean to a more mobile QB among the top teams. Bama-dual threat (this is the first year of a dual threat qb at Bama in this run. Theyve stayed at the top with passers, or "statues (LOL)". 23. Iowa Rivalry and Valentinos Oh the pet peeves of the Knapp.
  24. Exactly. I can't remember if it was against Minny or Maryland but there was one punt to DPE that he could have easily returned for once (probably the most space I've seen for him all year) but waved for a fair catch. You can tell he's not comfortable back there bc he never knows when 10 guys are going to be bearing down on him the second he catches it. It's basically a double whammy - not only is the blocking horrible but then when there is a small amount of space, it's causing our returner to hesitate and you typically do not have time to hesitate on PR's. Minnesota's first punt. Glad you brought that up. I was sittin in South stadium and as the punt was in the air, everyone got this deep breath excited feeling. We could see all the space, and gaping gash to the right. And he calls fair catch. Almost like it's just pre determined based on our alignment and situation.
