  1. it's called conference play. sure, in the first 15 games nu managed to win the pac-10, whoopty-doo; the pac-10 will get one team in the tourney by default. the only team close to big xii caliber was byu and they provided us with a preview of what was to come once conference season hit
  2. Bob Devaney Sports Center Track the track facility is great. if a new arena is built, i'm pretty sure they'll still have the track facility. the new arena is about basketball and bringing some life to lincoln in the way of concerts, seminars, etc.
  3. So KU can win in an outdated arena - but NU can't? I hope those of you comparing NU to Kansas, Duke, etc. are kidding. sure they play in old arenas, but they have TRADITION. When Bill Self or coach K calls a recruit and says "come play for me," they don't say "i don't know, your arena is kind of old" they say "hell yeah i'll go play for one of the best programs/coaches in the history of the sport." NU doesn't have that luxury, so they need other things to lure kids in. Yes, the Bob seems young, but think of the football arms race: facilities are out-dated after five years. Basketball is the same. Also, you can't compare Memorial Stadium during Osborne's years to now; like it or not, back then kids went to college for an education or a chance to win under a good coach, these days kids are all about going to play at the hot-item schools, meaning schools that are either winning or have sweet-ass facilities. I'd be okay with renovating the bob, but that isn't going to help grow the city of lincoln, which is a big part of the new arena discussion. this is about more than just basketball, altho as a fan i tend to talk about the basketball benefits more than the others.
  4. No offense to Doc, but it's time to start shopping for a new coach, the program is headed in the wrong direction. We need someone that can build a program that can at least compete in its own conference. I know doc has had a few years now and should have his own recruits in place and be competing - and frankly i'm pissed he hasn't done it yet - but I think we really do need to give him another two year. Yes, he has had time, but it really isn't fair to have expected him to to put together a solid recruiting class in a year or two at NEBRASKA. At a place like NU you need a year or two to show recruits your philosophy/style of play and then you can start pulling in the guys you need. It looks like he might be finally starting to do that with all the young guys playing. Next year he needs to be competitive and .500 in league play or maybe one game off if they don't get blown out and are in every game. Then in two years he needs to have this team to where it is for real. Just my opinion. Although I would prefer he just starts winning now
  5. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out next time a game's on. I don't know how well that station comes in here in Lincoln. Froggy 98 (98.1) covers it in Lincoln. also on either 1400 or 1450, don't remember which one i found it on
  6. their athletes are in a completely different class than NUs
  7. t.v. announcers always seem to love doc's young team and talk about how good these young guys will be in the future. unfortunately i've grown tired of waiting for the future
  8. I'm not saying you're wrong, cause you make an excellent point. But in fairness, would Tom have been a US Congressman if he hadn't just won three national titles? You can't say without a doubt that he would have been. But you are right, point taken.
  9. I know there are people who are going to come down hard on me, but put aside your rose-colored glasses for a minute (I know, I know. It's hard for me to do, too). Everyone knows the talk is out there about the Big XII losing teams to other conferences. We can argue all day and night about how bad this hurts NU, but the bottom line is it will certainly not help NU and will almost certainly hurt it, we just don't know to what degree. My point here is not to discuss that, it can be done on other posts. I want to talk about the leadership NU needs amidst these changes. Tom has been great for NU and he has played a huge part in getting football back while maintaining great teams/coaches in other sports (insert men's basketball comment here) and all of Nebraska loves and respects him. However, at the risk of getting run out of the state, I'm going to suggest that we need a different kind of representative now. In the midst of such a great conference shake up, NU needs to take a stand and make sure they don't get screwed in the deal. Tom is a well respected man - as he should be - but I'm not so sure he gets that same respect when he's at the round table with other ADs. Sure his calming, authoritative presence and his experience/wisdom is great to have, but right now I believe NU needs a representative that is more aggressive. Enter Trev Alberts. Trev will have the same guiding values that Tom has, which is something Nebraskans like their leaders to have. But I believe he will bring a more cut-throat approach. I'm not saying Tom gets pushed around, but Trev would have more of businessman approach that I think would better serve NU and the conference as we enter some unsure times. Tom was the right man for the job when he came in, but now that there is stability back at Nebraska, I think he can leave. I know people have said he will stay to see the new arena thing through, but I say as soon as we know what is going to happen with the arena he can step down. Trev has gained some experience (altho not much, it's still experience) and I really believe he will bring the kind of approach that we are going to need. Just wanted to know if anyone agrees or if I'm crazy
  10. Growing up my family never took vacations (we had to count staying in a holiday inn during the county fair as a vacation) because dad didn't want to leave the farm that long and mostly because he didn't want to deal with me and my brother fighting on a trip. Once we hit high school, though, we were old enough that mom and dad didn't mind traveling. The only real family vacations we have taken to this day are trips to bowl games, it's the ultimate vacation. You get to sight see for a few days and then wrap up the trip by cheering on the 'skers to another bowl win. It's the perfect ending to any vacation (NOTE: we learned to always sight see BEFORE the game, as a loss could put a damper on the rest of the trip)
  11. the crowd was lousy, BUT... this team kinda deserves that. hell, right now doc deserves that. i will always stay til the bitter end of any nu event, just cause i think that's what true fans should do, but it was obvious that game was over. after the previous three possessions did you really think we could score in nine seconds to send it to overtime? as for doc's coaching....i really have issues. obviously i am not a coach, nor do i pretend to be able to coach at the division i level, but come one. when you play peewee ball in elementary or play jr. high ball, you learn 1 - how to shoot; 2 - how to dribble; 3 - how to pass. the next most basic thing you learn is after you pass the ball, you MOVE. our guards stand. no one moves. no one. it's ridiculous. also didn't like starting the second half with the original starters, those were not the hot guys, in fact three of them didn't play the last umpteen minutes of the first half, so why start them again?! and perhaps the worst of all, myles holley was the stud of the game. he gave a spark and was giving the most effort of any of the guys. he makes a three point play at a pivotal moment towards the end of the game, doc then PULLS HIM FROM THE GAME AND DOESN"T REINSERT HIM?!?!?! again, i am not the coach, but come on. why? why? i wish brian rosenthal or someone would start to question some of these things. unfortunately, no radio stations talk about it (other than sports nightly which is afraid to criticize coaches, and 1620 which just laughs and moves on) and all the journal star does is report how the game goes but rosenthal never gives an opinion on the coaching. i like doc and wish to keep him, but he needs to be held accountable. just saying "this loss is on me" is not good enough. figure out an offense and play the guys that will help you win. this is getting absolutely ridiculous. ridiculous
  12. I'd love to see Suh as a number one pick just as much as everyone else, and would like him to get that kind of money. However, if he would drop from number one, i'd like him to drop to number three. he has a much better chance at winning with tampa bay (an up and coming team) than with either of the first two
  13. I can't stand reading Deena Winters' articles on the arena. Steve Sipple, or better yet a reporter who interviews people who actually know what's going on, need to write a few more pro-arena articles or at least take a neutral stance cause she is a loon
  14. I really want to know what people are thinking about this new arena. Ever since watching the video of what it would look like, I have been extremely pumped and praying that the people of Lincoln will support it. I live just outside of Lincoln and know several people ages 20-35 that live in or near Lincoln and would LOVE to have it happen, but I wondered what other people are thinking. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like many people visit the hoops blog so I don't know what kind of response this will get, but if you live in Lincoln or know people who do I'd be interested to read what some of you have heard from other Lincolnites. Honestly, my biggest reason for wanting it is that this year I bought season bball tickets and would love to go to a place like that to watch the games, plus I think it would help recruiting and get the ball rolling a little faster. I also think it's time Lincoln makes a move. A city that just maintains status quo and doesn't do anything to promote or grow itself might as well be dying. In life if you're not growing, you're dying. Right? As a 22 year old recent college grad, I can say that if I hadn't grown up a half hour from Lincoln there would be nothing attracting me to live here. Obviously the people are great, but there needs to be more in my opinion
  15. iowa state didn't scare me in the least last year. i realize it was a fluke and i'm not saying your confidence is unfounded, i'm just ready to be done with these years of having to worry about slipping up. unfortunately i don't know if we're quite to the point where we can mark down a W in pen before actually playing the game, especially against divisional foes, and i would give the mizzou the best chance to be that slip up for NU
  16. ok still not gettin it so i'll give up and just give my predictions. 1. NU - all the reasons that have been discussed over and over on here. (and assuming the boys don't drop one or two they shouldn't, a loss to mizzou or ksu early on really scares me) 2. MU - as much as i really, really hate to say it, they could be good. they had a disappointing year last year but i honestly think they could respond with a strong year. gabbert is good, no matter how much i hate him 3. Kansas - simply because of scheduling. Kstate has NU, OK State, Texas at home and every other big xii game is on the road. Kansas has Kstate, a&m, Colorado at home, not easy but easier than bill snyder and co. 4. Kstate - see kansas 5. Iowa State - Paul Rhodes looks like he's as good a hire as cyclone fans could have hoped for, unfortunately for them their cupboards are bare and I don't know if they'll ever be full. I think they'll be good and scarey in years to come, but it's still ISU 6. Colorado - I thought about putting them 7th. People can play the "they-have-talent-and-a-coach-on-the-ropes-which-makes-them-dangerous" card, but it's what people have been saying the last two years and look what they have done.

  20. And here's where the problems arise with this rumor. Signing Day was 2/3/10. Here's a post from 1/26/10: See how the rumor changes? Still think this is likely to be true? People hear this rumor from multiple sources and assume it's true because "where there's smoke there's fire." That had to be posted like five times in the original thread, as if it's some truism we should all live our lives by. Reality is that there has never been a single credible source even hint at this. Carl was doing interviews during this whole time, he was coaching in the bowl game, he was out on the recruiting trail, and he got a huge raise - all while allegedly halfway out the door because Goody Two-Shoes Tom Osborne couldn't tolerate his philandering. The bottom line is that most of the basis of this rumor comes from this very board. People read it, talk, and tell their friends and neighbors, word gets around, and suddenly everyone's hearing it from everyone else so they presume it's true. Amen, PT. Amen. Right after the Gator Bowl last year I heard Tom was having to decide if he should fire Carl or not for very similar reasons... I wasn't checking message boards yet so don't know if that went around, but I found it pretty funny to read those things this year, seeing as how I had heard almost the exact same thing a year ago. That being said, yes I think Carl will be gone at some point. I give him two more years here. He didn't comment on the Tennessee thing specifically (as far as I know) but he did say that Nebraska is on the verge of something very special and he likes working with Bo, so I think it will take just the perfect offer to get him to go. He is good enough, though, that the perfect offer will eventually come.
  21. It sucked he choose to F up in the most important time but we would not have been there without him. I hope he comes back next year Agree. I was furious for a few days but like you said, he made that team a hell of a lot better, so it's hard to be too mad. If he doesn't come back, I've been having fantasies of Vick and AP running the option and taking the league by storm . . . if only.
  22. Why is it unrealistic to expect our basketball team to be competitive? Unrealistic for them to be competitive this year with so many inexperienced starters. Yeah but we are never competitive. We have never been to a big 12 championship game and at the end of the year we will have the least amount of NCAA tourny trips out of any big 12 team. I would be content if we made the NCAA tournament once in a while and if over 1/3 of the team didn't think about transfering. It just looks bad. Really? Really? You obviously do not watch Nebraska basketball. The one thing that has kept people (not just fans, but also analysts) optimistic about Doc is that he gets no-talent bums to be COMPETITIVE in almost every game. They are never competitive is an absolutely ridiculous statement. No, they haven't won a whole heck of a lot, but watch a game once. Other than CU and K-State this year, they have been competitive in every game. Watching the away games on t.v., you always hear the announcers (even when it's ESPN) talk about how great it is to see a coach get such low rated players to play so hard and be so COMPETITIVE against top tier talent.
