  1. Frats & sororities aren't huge at A&M, so I'd be surprised if that has any effect on tailgating. Hope everyone has a great time!
  2. We have "practice" yell at midnight before the game in the stadium. It's a five minute walk from the Northgate bars to the stadium, so it's just a fun tradition and only takes about 30 minutes out of your night and then you're back at the bar. The Yell Leaders tell a bunch of really corny stories about A&M or our opponent, then we go through our yells and then the lights go out, during which you kiss your date (called "mugging down") or hold up a lighter to find a date so you CAN mug Visitors are more than welcome - Texas Tech fans love to come and pretend to read newspapers the whole time. It's fun as an Aggie; whether it's interesting otherwise depends on you. Here's some video Huskers fan took before the last Nebraska game.
  3. I'd say this is an accurate analysis. Tannehill has not seen a defense like yours, and we don't know how he'll respond. He scared the crap out of me against OU - threw 2 INTs but honestly there easily could have been 4 more if OU was trying harder. He matures more and more each game, so I hope he's ready for this. I still think there's a good chance we pull it off though. The games is going to come down to who capitalizes off the key plays; hopefully the ball will bounce in our direction. Can't wait!!!
  4. We share a common source of funding - the Permanent University Fund - which comes from oil money. The legislature apparently threatens to pull the PUF or distribute it to additional schools when A&M and UT start talking about splitting up. Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors, but the common knowledge is that the powers that be want us together. Who really knows what the heck is going on though! I think we'd be just fine in different conferences, especially if we kept an out-of-conference rivalry game going.
  5. Eh, I don't think we're the only ones with a cool atmosphere, but I'm sure it's not unique to Aggies to think they have the best game day experience, best traditions, or best fans - hopefully everyone feels that way about their own school. If you're not going to pump yourself up, who will? I just got back from my first LSU experience in Death Valley, and I'll be the first to say the Tigers' tailgating >>>> Aggie tailgaiting though. Those people are SERIOUS. As far as our band and yell leaders, it stems from A&M originally being a military college. It only became a "normal" university in the 60's. That tradition doesn't just disappear.
  6. I wouldn't say we're in desperate need of a rival. I agree that the Texas/OU rivalry is much bigger, especially over the last ten years, but Texas is still a rivalry. So is Texas Tech, to an extent. No need to feel sorry for us! We pretty much get hyped up every game, but this is the biggest I've seen since we took on #1 OU while I was in school. Now THAT was a heckuva game - best game I've ever attended.
  7. Hey Tech! I have to say you guys were my absolute favorite out of conference team. I was a bartender on Northgate for four years so I had a lot of contact with opposing teams' fans since that's where everyone came on game days and you guys stuck out when you visited in '02. I went to grad school at Virginia, but I always secretly rooted for you guys while I was there!
  8. If you're still around Aggie, I'm curious to know what you thought of the near-move to the SEC. How did you feel when the rumors were going on at the time and how do you feel about the non-move now? At first I didn't want to leave. I started at A&M in 2000 and the Big 12 was all I knew. Eventually I started to realize that the Big 12 just wasn't viable and that a new conference would be necessary. I was really hoping to go to the Big 10. I never heard it from people back home, but the word up here amongst a lot of Big 10 people was that Delany was looking to bring in Texas and Texas A&M (remember the "Tech problem" email?) and capture the entire Texas TV market (or at least a huge portion of it). Texas wasn't biting (they don't like to share) and I doubt we were invited on our own anyways. Plus most A&M fans I talked to had zero interest in the Big 10. I'm so glad we didn't go during the realignment now. We are not in a good enough position to make the jump as of yet - still rebuilding! The SEC just seems like a natural fit but I really REALLY don't like the rampant pay-for-play and oversigning going on there. I'm not so naiive to believe that infractions never happen at A&M or in most conferences, but it seems like a whole different ballgame over there. I feel that A&M would have to play dirty to compete and I'm uncomfortable with that. As far as holding up in the SEC, I think A&M would be okay - good most years with a great run here and there. We have built-in advantages (rabid fan base, high athletic revenue, facilities, recruiting base) that should keep us afloat, as long as we can find a decent coach (which I think we have). We've been through 3 coaches in the past ten years, and it's no coincidence that those have been the worst ten years since A&M became a full-fledged flagship university and not solely a military school. I haven't been a football fan long enough to really say I'll miss the teams we play. I think we'd still play Texas every year, sort of like Georgia/Ga Tech does even though they're in different conferences, but if we didn't, oh well. They've gotten too greedy; as a Michigan fan, I understand you can have an elite, successful program that doesn't run everyone else off. I'd be excited to renew the rivalry with LSU, especially since my baby brother is there!
  9. Now where's the fun in that? It's not college football unless you have a couple near heart attacks and break out in a sweat at least once! Or maybe that's just applicable to Aggie football fans...it's been a rough decade.
  10. I think most Ags consider the Huskers the best team we'll play this year and the biggest test for our new QB and burgeoning defense. We may be the underdog, but you guys will have to pry that W from our cold, dead hands! As a fan of college football in general, I'm thinking it'll be a great game to watch. I only wish I could be there. Hope you Huskers making the trip down to College Station enjoy yourselves! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umSpMuRF_H4&feature=player_embedded
  11. HAHA, Ryan Swope/Ellen is awesome. I love my boys, but that's funny.
  12. Yep, living in Chicago - I've made it through one whole winter here so I'm allowed to complain about cold weather! I expect the Big 12-2 to last no more than five more years. I really don't want to go to the SEC (not a fan of the rampant pay-for-play and oversigning), but I'm guessing that's what's going to happen. I'm just glad we didn't jump ship and head out during this past realignment. Although I think you guys made an excellent decision, our situation was different - we need the next few years to straighten up before we go jumping in the SEC. Three coaches in ten years does bad things to a football program, as well as the severe mismanagement of our record-high revenue which led our athletic dep't to be in the red last year. It just was not the right time. Good luck in the Big Ten though; it really is a great conference.
  13. This. Every A&M game, I'm like "Wow, what an AWFUL call! They are blantantly anti-A&M". Then they'll make a crappier call against the other team. Eventually, I just realized our refs are god-awful. It sometimes evens out, but even then it ticks me off.
  14. I find the Big Ten Commish Delany terrifying...I don't mean that as a compliment or a putdown, just as an absolute truth. He will do anything, and I mean, anything, to fortify, improve and protect the Big Ten. Just read "Death to the BCS." Delany took pride in making Beebe his **tch, only calling him the night before the official announcement to let Beebe know that he'd just poached one of his most storied programs. He's the kind of guy you'd want on your side, and definitely not against you.
  15. It is a great conference. I'm jealous, if only for the benefits of the Big Ten network alone. If I had a "BIG10" button here on my desk that would whisk A&M away, I'd hit it in a heartbeat. Plus midwesterners are good people and great fans, except for tOSU fans, who are EVIL. They kick babies and cheer for cancer. Remember that, mmkay. GO BLUE.
  16. I don't know many Huskers but I assume ecstatic? Is it bittersweet at all? I live in Big Ten country with the biggest Michigan fan you'll ever meet and people here are excited to have you. I will most likely be seeing you guys at the Big House in Ann Arbor on November 19th (EDIT: 2011). FYI, it's COLD here.
  17. Born and grew up in Lincoln, first game was a Huskers game, and family are Husker fans - and you're an Aggie? Tisk Tisk. I wasn't born in Texas, but the grace of God got me here as soon as possible. And yes, Nebraska's rank is 105 Now that we are moving to the Big-10, will that ranking of 105 possibly be higher over time, as we get more into what the big-10 requires of each of its conference members? I still don't understand how you can be a T&AM fan. Just doesn't seem right.... GBR!!! Worked very well for Penn State - they shot up the rankings in the two decades after joining the Big 10. Good luck Saturday, but just a little bit. I'm a Lions fan so I'm indebted to you guys for Suh, but only for so much!
  18. Not all Aggies are underestimating your defense. I'm so excited to see how Tannehill responds to the notorious Blackshirts and your complicated defensive scheme - W or L, I'm sure he's going to learn a lot Saturday night. Good luck, but not too much luck
