  1. Hey, no reason to be so down! We play really well on the road under Pelini. This is what makes good teams. Rising up to the challenge. You wouldn't want to play Idaho St every week right? Don't sell the Huskers short.

    Uni's

I think they should roll these out whenever a tough opponent comes to town.
  3. the thing I don't like about how the game has changed in the last year or two is that with these incomplete passes, the refs are making a determination about a catch after the play is dead and sometimes 6 yards out of bounds. The way it always was, if you secured the football, and got one foot down or were downed in the field of play it was a catch. And the ground could not cause a fumble. Now they are watching after the play is dead to make sure you come up with the football. It seems like it goes too far to me because what happens after the player is downed should be irrelevant in terms of the catch.
  4. Things must have changed in the rule book. Or it was a blown call. He clearly had posession of the ball without bobbling it until it smacked the ground which was after his hips were down making the play dead. And it used to be the ground could not cause a fumble.
  5. What was the deal with the catch that got called incomplete inside the 5? I thought he was clearly down and the ground can't cause a fumble right?
  6. I hope the defense has turned a corner and plays like this the rest of the year. And I hope we scheme this well too. Bring some more pressure. Huskers will do a lot better if they continue to give Abdullah some meaningful time and keep Rex fresh to pound it out in the second half. I would have liked to see us pound in at least one more touchdown on that second to last drive but this works.
  7. when you're Nebraska I just don't see how you can consent to taking the field without the White helmet with iconic red "N". I like the black everywhere else. I could even do the black helmet but don't mess with the red "N"
  8. I just saw the South Carolina hit that resulted in the suspension of the D-back last weekend for "targeting" . It just looked like a good hit to me not like what we used to call "speering" with the top of the head. It just looked like a good hard hit to me. They are really taking the hard hitting out of the game, and to me the overall game of football suffers. A defensive player just can't affort to hit as hard or as well as they used to. For example with today's rules the John Ruud hit in 78 on the kickoff would surely have resulted in a suspension. That is one of the hits we celebrate in Husker history, but in today's world it would be shunned. I just don't understand it. I played football in junior high, high school and college, and coached ( I am a certified NE coach). We taught (and were taught) to tuck your chin , square up, and drive through the player. A defensive player today is asked to make the entire hit with his shoulder, which is difficult and can end up with a broken collar bone, shoulder separation or broken arm. We never taught to lead with the head, or to duck the head. We taught to keep the head up and not to speer. But the head was there and part of the hit, usually the forehead or side of the helmet. Secondly, these reviews up in the booth that end up overturning a catch are really splitting hairs and really slowing down the game. I watched a good call last night go against ULM after review, where it seemed to me the official on the field had it right. There was no undisputable evidence but it was overturned anyway. These box refs sit up there with a rule book and try to apply it word for word to what they are seeing in ultra slow motion. The result is that some calls which are good catches are getting taken away. Things look different in slow motion than real life. When you go frame by frame that ball looks like it sits on the ground for an eternity with those 6 or seven fingers under it. But in real life those fingers clasped under that ball, hit the ground first and controlled the ball all the way through even though the whole thing took only a third of a second. I think they need to only review these things if it looked like it might not have been a catch, but the one last night was an "automatic review" What's with this possessing the ball all the way through the catch? We have refs looking to see what happens 6 yards out of bounds. To me you catch the ball (get control of it with your hands or arms.) and when some part of your body hits out of bounds the play is over. What happens after the play is dead is irrelevant to me. That's the way it was for about 50 years but now all of a sudden that's not good enough?
  9. the difference between 95000 and 115000 in terms of revenue is around one million dollars in ticket revenue per home game. shocking ideas often encounter resistance, correctness notwithstanding.
  10. If I were doing stadium expansion I would look hard at a completely new facility. It would hold no less than 115,000 people. It would have self contained training and indoor/ outdoor practice facilites, weight training, nutrition, dorms and classrooms.
  11. all I can say is when you are out of the top 25 playing Arkansas St, at 11:00 am these are the announcers you are going to get. At least it wasn't Ed Cunningham.
  12. Holding teams to an average of 10-12 points now for a season average is a lot more difficult than it used to be. You see Alabama getting it done year in and an year out with one of the best coaches money can buy and consistenly top tier talent. Short of that its going to be tough sledding trying to match those old numbers from Osborne and Devaney. We did it one year recently with some freak talent on the D line. What happened is first the scholarships got limited to 85 for everyone making the big schools like Nebraska the same as the Kansas States of the world. At about the same time, coaching knowledge increased at a great number of schools dramatically as did strength training. Erase the Nebraska advantage there too which we historically had. Suddenly you had fast strong athletes spread around with great facilities. Also these former doorstep programs began to get more money from donors and better facilities. You add all this up and what you get is opponents with great talent, coaching and strength running advanced offensive schemes where before you had a team of 3/4 walk ons running the wishbone. Things have changed.
  13. I personally like Abullah back there better than Rex. Nothing against Rex he is a fine running back. To me Abdullah can reverse field with a nice explosive acceleration and catch a defense out of position better than Rex, and he has more over all explosiveness. To me other than that its a push. I think Abdullah is 1/2 step quicker in and out of the cuts. I do see an advantage in letting Rex get some reps to help keep Abdullah from getting injured.
  14. his performance against mizzou was one of the all time great husker rushing performances, and kudos to the line that day too. Another recent good one was Brandon Jackson
  15. I like the big block "N" but not sure about the black helmet... the color combo kind of reminds me of the red raiders. I also like black shirt look in the sig way above. I don't care what they wear as long as they bring the pain, and keep the N on the hat!
  16. theres just something straight up strange about trying to teach your starting quarterback to throw when he's a Junior in college. He does have a little something that helps him keep the team on the field and moving the ball a little bit but any throw over about 17 yds he really gets under that ball and throws from his back foot. When he runs he looks like it's an unexpected accident when he is actually touched by the defense, a far cry from the punishment dealt out by Scott Frost and Eric Crouch. But he is fast, tough for hanging in there despite the criticism and I hope he does well. I don't know if I would be working on his throwing motion as much as I would be working with him on lowering his shoulder when he runs and hanging on to that football. Kind of like when Tebow went to the Broncos and they totally changed their offense to fit him. I like what teams have done with fast QB's like Braxton Miller and D Rob
  17. Couldn't disagree more...The edges were a huge weakness with that front. Take Suh out of the equation and that defensive front would have stunk. But thats part of the thing. You don't take Suh out of the equation. I don't recall any team being able to take advantage of the c gap on that line, remember something like 10.3 points a game average all year there simply wasn't a problem with the edges. I saw that line embarrass blue chip athletes from UT so bad that they were embarrassed to pull their head out of the turf and go back to the huddle. I am not taking anything away from the defensive line in 94, 95. In fact if you go back and look at the games you see a very similar level of hustle and activity with the front seven in both decades. I would also add that watching Rich Glover set the wishbone on edge was also great.
  18. I remember very well the defensive fronts of the 90's and how they got pressure from the edges and then up the middle later in the games. The Peter's brothers were strong and well conditioned. The defensive ends were extremely explosive and strong. The offensive teams now are better coached than they used to be largely and that would not be quite as effective now. They are much better now at checking to other plays to offset that pressure and catch you out of position. The defensive front with Suh and company was the best defensive front we have had at Nebraska I have seen. They could crunch a line up the middle, from the edges it didn't matter. And they did it with continual double teams. It was just man on man stay in your gap ass kicking. They could and did score crucial points. Its something to have a line than can control a game, it's something else to have a line that you can almost count on providing a touchdown per game. Coverage was excellent too something both those defenses had in common. If the quarterback doesn't have anywhere to go with the ball they hold it just a little longer and that helps the line. Bo flat knows defense.
  19. Says who??? What does that help and how?? Punish the travel agencies, the restaurants, the fans? Punish Rex Burkhead for his part in this? Give the whole team a self imposed one game suspension for what they did or didn't do in the Penn State shower room? If you want to do something for real, then step away from the computer, and go sign up to be a Big Pal, a Scout leader, or similar. Give kids an adult to hang around other than people like Sandusky. Otherwise, go climb a hilltop, light a candle, take a picture and put in on Facebook. That might make you feel better. Leave the rest of us alone, we were each issued with our own conscience, no need to loan out yours. I have two boys I am raising so you can kiss my ass
  20. I am watching NBC sportstalk with a guest that authors a blog (?) "Sports by Brooks" Its apparent that Penn State is not interested in institutional change; keeping every coach they can including McQueary, and turning the program over to a LONG time Penn State assistant and athlete. Also Barry Switzer says "Every member of that coaching staff had to know." which I totally believe. It is likely JoPa let Sandusky coach the rest of the 98 season knowing that boys were being taken along for team trips including to the Alamo bowl where a rape also occurred. They have not cleaned house, personally I don't take that very well. I can't see going about business as usual and playing them in football till every member of that staff is gone. I am also in a personal quandary about watching or listening to the game.
  21. There are going to be hardships for the innocent Penn State players. That is tragic. It is not of Nebraska's doing. And symbolically showing the players of Penn State what we stand for, might be lifelong lesson, not a punishment. What is more benevolent, setting a good example that will stick in someone's mind for life, or letting them play you a game of football? Was it right to boycott the 1980 Olympics? I think it was. There were quite a few innocents there too.
  22. We here in Nebraska don't condone that kind of behavior. All I am asking the University to do is to show it!
  23. I opened a topic not seeing this one which was locked so I will continue here. The moral and ethical thing to do is not to go and play this game. I know conference standings and money are in play but when does does money and conference standing come above what is right? God only knows how many people in that program knew but it was more than those who have been disciplined so far. So do we reward that by going over there to help put on a show? I don't think so. There will be guilty parties sitting up in the coaching box at the game. How much more wrong can it be?
  24. I did not realize. If your neighbors across the way had just been caught raping their children, would you go on over there for Sunday dinner and a game of catch as usual? Something just isn't right about it.
  25. Nebraska should not attend the game at Penn St. University this weekend. When you take the field against an opponent it needs to be against an honorable opponent. Yes there is honor in the game. I am not convinced that the culture of apathy and secrecy at Penn St. has been abated. I feel that in some way taking the field in a business as usual way does not acknowledge the wrong that has been committed there. I see no reason why this game should go forward. Oh there are immoral considerations such as money, but no. They handed the reigns to a 33 year veteran of the program. I don't see how that does anything to right the ship. McQueary is still on the staff as well.
