  1. Agreed, mmg. The academic influence will be nice, and the extra, stable guaranteed monies we'll have coming in from the B1G network will be nice as well. No worries about commitment, either, which was a principal factor for everyone that left. And you hit the nail on the head, fro. But time will help, and getting to know the new foes will as well. 5-10 years down the road, we'll likely be wondering what the fuss was about switching.
  2. Other than those two, though, the other six all seem to be on the right track in the B1G. I would have probably phrased it differently than 'eking' out an over .500 win percentage, considering the difference between wins and losses was 18 games, but meh... without the tough showing for men's basketball and women's soccer, we'd be well into the 60% win territory. Hopefully, Walker can rekindle the fire in his soccer team, and I think we have a lot of faith in Smiles, even if it may not show itself this year. Both of those programs may be about a year or so away.
  3. This article describes what's out there publicly. I didn't know she had transferred until you posted that, knapp. She was amazing to watch at the games I took the kids to last year. The team, when you look at the roster, seems to be tailored for a run in '13 or '14. A LOT of freshman and sophmores. And that article also states that a close friend of hers is moving as well, so it may just be they wanted to play together, and that she was looking for a team that had more potential than what she was seeing at Nebraska. Maybe she felt she wasn't going to see the National Team potential at Nebraska. Here's the article: http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/premier-scorer-in-country-transfers-to-scu_aid23617 I know Walker commented a couple years ago that the team was still really paying from Jenna Cooper's death. He was trying to turn that around. Maybe a new atmosphere for this group, a new focus with a younger crowd, is exactly what they need. Tough to fire a coach that has had the success at Nebraska that Walker is over the years, but if this round of recruits doesn't shine, maybe it's time to look forward. Cooper's death was just a tough ordeal, but at some point, the team has to get beyond that and show the capability it once showed.
  4. mmg and fro - I'm still not sure I've shaken that feeling. Still feels odd, for really the first time, to be in a brand new territory. Considering all of our old realignments had really been addition with no teams leaving, this was truly new territory. Again, still 100% behind what happened, and glad to be where we are... but still strange not having the old rivals anymore.
  5. Looks like there is another deck on the sides too. Renovations look really nice, fro! Remember going there back in the 80s. Crazy place to be, but we were treated pretty good. Good luck with getting the expansion financing and getting the remodel done!
  6. Been playing Diablo III and the beta of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria a bit. Mists looks to be a nice xpac, lot of nice changes made, and the new race/class look to be really well done. Also liking the revamped talent system a lot. Diablo III has been fun, but I've had to wait for the kids to not be around to play it, so I'm not done with Act I yet. Killed the Skeleton King already, though. Should be fun to play through at least. Also been catching up some of my WoW characters. Had been off my Horde characters for a while until the last 6 months or so, so just finally getting caught up on the last bits of Horde lore that I lost out on. Interesting stuff! Had a level 70 Tauren Druid back in TBC, but had only gotten him to 75 by the end of Wrath, so it has been a bit. Focused on my Alliance characters through Wrath. Lots of fun, and while I enjoyed Cata, Mists looks to bring even more to the game. Can't wait for the release!
  7. Yeah, I don't think the town would have a problem supporting hockey in Lincoln. While not automatic, I think many of the Stars fans would at least be intrigued by Huskers hockey. I also think there are many hockey fans that may have just not developed the affinity for the Stars that would pony up the money for hockey. But ultimately, with a good coach and a building team, I think you could easily build to a crowd that would begin to sell out the new arena. I also think the Huskers brand would attract a few thousand that just may have not been excited/attached themselves to the other hockey teams in the area (Lancers/Stars/Mavs). I think it would be exciting to have the Mavs and the Huskers going at it in an in-state rivalry (though it might take a while for the Huskers to build to where the Mavs are now). I know my family would certainly be amongst the hockey fans that would be interested in tickets.
  8. http://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/2011-06-15/financial-gap-widening-division-i http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/college-athletics-losing-money/ Two different articles, the first from 6/11 and the second from 6/10, showing in two consecutive years, 14 and 22 schools, respectively, earned more than they spent. I found it interesting in the second article that of the four/five schools in Alabama, only Alabama actually made money. Even a program like Auburn, in that report, was breaking even or losing money. Interesting stuff, and I'm sure with a little more digging, somebody can find the actual schools. I know I've found it before, but my time is limited right now. Might try and dig for it later.
  9. It's been a while since I've seen the list, but I know the last time I checked, I think less than 20 (and I'm thinking it was around 13) of the programs that carry FBS football programs broke even or made money. The rest lost. I'll see if I can find it. Interesting stuff, and gives you the idea of the kind of company we're able to keep in bringing in finances to the school and managing costs.
  10. Yeah, Nexus had it above. Can hold up to 10K for big matches/special events, but normal capacity around 7K. Post #5 above.
  11. Just under 7K for capacity, when the remodel is complete, I mean.
  12. Not 10K, Blackshirts. Just under 7K, from the estimates I heard. They're lowering the ceiling, and taking out a ton of seats, and adding in suites above the regular seating.
  13. The B1G isn't terrible. They're better than many leagues out there. But they interviewed (a Husker whose name I've forgotten) on The Ticket on Tuesday, and even he confirmed that the B1G isn't as tough as the Big XII. He says there are better overall athletes in the Big XII, although he did say that the B1G guys are all very scrappy, and give a good fight. But it was clear he felt the B1G was a step down from the Big XII. Agreed. If you go to warrennolan.com, they actually have an RPI listed for conferences. By his posting there, the B1G is eleventh out of 32 DI baseball conferences. If you go by win percentage, we're in the same spot. By those standings, the conference is right on the cusp of top third of the conferences. Not great, and not as good as Big XII or even the MVC, but decent, and certainly not as bad as we've heard it made out to be.
  14. Nicely done by Niederklein to get out of the inning. Nice job by Hander to give a good start on a day when we really needed one.
  15. Christensen with a single to score 1, Stock with a double to score 2 more, now 7-1.
  16. I know Cook addressed selling it out when they announced the facility. I don't think they'd be moving there if they didn't think the demand warranted it. They're certainly cognizant of wanting to protect their sellout string.
  17. I think, for better or for worse, at least when it comes to football, we've hitched our wagon (or they've hitched theirs, whichever way is more palatable) to the Pac-12. I think, after all is said and done, it'll be a good fit for both conferences, and make both stronger.
  18. After doing some digging, while there isn't a lot out there about it, there was one article on the Journal-Star's website talking about the Stars not going anywhere else, and every plan design for Innovation Campus I could find had the Ice Box incorporated into the plans. The Journal-Star's article, I believe, also stated that the current lease is until '31, and would continue even to new ownership (article was done before everything was decided and transferred). I don't think the owners are likely to give up that lease agreement too willingly, with the home advantage that place gives them. Time will tell, but I think the intent is to keep the Ice Box there, and that Perlman even stated he thought it would complement Innovation Campus quite well.
  19. I missed OH's comment. O-H, as far as I still understand from my friends, the owners have essentially been guaranteed that building to play in for as long as they want. It's the one building that won't go by the wayside when Innovation Park/Campus, from what I understand. And I doubt that facility has the seats/amenities capability that the Ice Box currently has. the seating in the new facility doesn't look even close. And part of the reason to build the new facility was to get more ice sheets and more ice time in Lincoln, because the Ice Box offered skaters outside of the hockey users so little time, and that wouldn't make as much sense if the Ice Box were going to go bye-bye all of a sudden. That, and the Ice Box brings in extra money for the University that they don't even have to think about, especially now that they're charging for parking. I don't know why the owners would have gone public with the information about the Ice Box in that fashion if the University hadn't basically guaranteed their place there. Anyhow, glad to have more ice in Lincoln, regardless. Good all around.
  20. Thanks for posting the pic, Knapp. My understanding from that article, which I believe is the last one I've seen talk about it, is that the location by Haymarket Park will be where the rink goes, and that construction basically could/will start anytime. While the Husker logo is in there, I think that was built in to show that one of the sheets would be used for the current club team to play its games on. They currently have to go out of town to play their games (Columbus, if I'm remembering correctly? haven't looked that up in a while). That was the most recent scuttlebutt from my hockey connections here in town. But having the sheet there would certainly give the practice facility to use if they were to upgrade the club hockey to NCAA levels. (If you take a look at Penn State's DI hockey schedule for next year as an independent, they play several club teams next year to round out their schedule) Hopefully, we can find a good funder to bring in the money to start the programs. Perhaps the Breslow family themselves would be willing to put up the money, though those kind of dollars are a great deal more than the $$ needed to build the ice center.
  21. why are some names all capitilized and some not? Uhhh... 'Unanimous honorees in all caps'. That would be your answer.
  22. Very good news! Shows that against some decent basketball programs, Miles and his crew is already winning some battles for recruits. I think we found a gem, for sure. Great news to have a big guy like that coming!
  23. Prayers and thoughts out for him and his family and friends. Sad, sad day. One of the greats to play the game.
  24. Thanks for that info, da skers. Puts my mind a little more at ease in this situation. That was basically what I would have expected to hear regarding boosters, but it's good to hear that verified a little. There are many things I think of Harvey (several of them not very kind), but one thing I will say for him is he is not stupid. I don't think he'll put his job on the line for this issue. I could be wrong, and I'll see how it plays out, but I would imagine if Ron is fired, Harvey wion't be the Chancellor at UNL much longer. Just a got feeling about this situation. I've had my say on the rest, and I believe my feelings are known. I won't reiterate but to say that as long as Ron explicitly states that its HIS opinion if he speaks at the Lincoln City Council meeting, there should be no repercussions for that.
