United Kingdom -- Binmen have been banned from wearing Santa hats — on health grounds.

The refuse collectors in Kingston upon Hull have worn the traditional red hats for years.

Now city council scrooges say “it does not create a professional impression of the council”.

But one angry binman told The Sun: “It doesn’t look like anyone can escape the PC brigade this year.

“Our Santa hats have always brought a bit of festive cheer to local households. We loved seeing the faces of excited kids watching us from the window and laughing at our hats.

“It’s been a Christmas tradition for years — but not any more.”

A spokesman for the East Yorkshire city said: “Employees can wear Christmas hats in their own time. Wearing them during work time does not create a professional impression.

“Further, there can be health and safety implications should hats get in the way of dangerous machinery operation.”

The Sun has launched a “Kick ’Em In The Baubles” campaign to prevent killjoys and the PC brigade from axing Christmas celebrations around the country.

Health and safety nuts at ELSTREE, HERTS, were blamed yesterday for red tape that means the town will be without its Christmas lights for the first time in nearly 40 years.

Entertainment officer Paul Welsh said: “We were told we would need to comply with new standards and could not upgrade in time.”

BUT The Sun scored a victory when Job Centre area manager Chris Nicol lifted his ban on decorations in his SOUTH LONDON offices.

He changed his mind when we contacted him. And one delighted worker said: “Thanks to The Sun we can now have our decorations back.”
