We will almost certainly MAKE a regional and if we finish out really well have an outside chance of hosting one. I think right now we are projected as a #2 seed.

it is a final 6-3 huskers win. I hope we can maybe get a 1 seed if we win out and go to finals in big 12 tourney. Or just have a rare occasion of a 2 seed getting home field in regionals.

Nebraska’s DJ Belfonte and Mitch Abeita had already thrown Kansas State’s comeback plan off stride by producing a defensive play that ended the top of the fifth inning in Haymarket Park on Saturday afternoon.

 

So guess who put swings on the ball in the bottom half to stop the Wildcats in their tracks?

 

“I felt like the momentum shift was kind of up in the air. That was a big time for it,” Abeita said of his two-run double that gave the Huskers a 5-2 lead.

 

Belfonte would follow with an RBI single and the Huskers would eventually settle for a 6-3 victory that left them 25-17 overall and back at .500 (10-10) in Big 12 Conference play. A win in today’s 1:05 p.m. series finale would give NU its first winning record in league play this season.

 

“This is a tough league, but if we’re happy to be at .500, we’ve made a mistake,” said coach Mike Anderson, whose club has won three of its past four Big 12 series.

 

Not surprisingly, Nebraska, which won 4-3 on Friday, clinched this one with Johnny Dorn on the mound. The right-handed junior — who was aided by three double plays in the first five innings but gave up four hits and a walk to the last six batters he faced — notched his 10th career win in 14 opportunities when the Huskers were trying to secure a series.

 

Dorn (7-2) has Belfonte and Abeita to thank for recording his last out.

 

Kansas State State had pulled to 3-2 in the fifth on two-out RBI singles by Byron Wiley and Nate Tenbrink. Tyler Ruch then lined a single to the right fielder Belfonte, who with Wiley being waved around third fired a throw home that gave Abeita plenty of time to record the out.

 

“I guess K-State was just trying to take advantage of a freshman, to see if I can make a play,” Belfonte said. “If we were in that situation, we’d probably do the same type of thing. They had momentum at the time and I don’t blame them for doing that.“

 

Abeita, who’d dropped a ball at the plate on a play that gave Creighton a 2-1 win against NU earlier this month, was just glad he didn’t have to make a hurried tag.

 

“Byron Wiley’s coming in hard — it’s good to have the time to set your feet with a guy coming in like that,” he said.

 

While Abeita praised Dorn for lasting six innings on a day when he was struggling to find the corners of the plate with his fastball, “At that point, Johnny was working hard trying to get those outs, and it really helps when you can get somebody on the field to come up and just make a play for you.“

 

The Huskers, who had gotten a three-run homer from Andrew Brown off Trevor Hurley (1-2) with two outs in the fifth, immediately answered K-State’s rally.

 

Jeff Tezak singled off Todd Vogel with one out in the sixth before Vogel walked Bryce Nimmo on four pitches with two outs.

 

Abeita then fell behind 0-2 in the count but, after taking a pitch out of the strike zone, looped a ball that landed just inside the right-field line for a double. Belfonte followed by driving him in with a single up the middle.

 

“He was coming in with fastballs and away with the breaking balls,” Abeita said of Vogel, “and our philosophy is whenever you get down two strikes, you expect the breaking ball and adjust to the fastball in, (so) you’re already set to hit. And he happened to throw a fastball, middle in, and I just fought it off over the first baseman’s head.“

 

After the inning, Nebraska called on Steve Edlefsen, who retired all six batters he faced before turning things over to Thad Weber for the ninth. Weber ran into trouble, giving up a walk and an RBI double to Ruch, but then came back to fan Eli Rumler and Jordan Cruz to end the game.

 

Saturday’s result was Nebraska’s 13th straight win in Lincoln against the Wildcats, and 14th of the last 15 overall in the series.
