ATHENS, Ohio — Ohio University has extended football coach Frank Solich's contract through the 2013 season.

The former Husker head coach will be 64 in September. If he fulfills his contract, he will be 69 at the end of the 2013 season.

Athletic Director Jim Schaus said today that Solich has done a good job turning around the program in three years while compiling a 19-18 record.

Solich, who compiled a 58-19 record at Nebraska before he was fired at the close of the 2003 regular season, guided the Bobcats to a 6-6 record last season.

Solich led the team to the GMAC Bowl in 2006, marking Ohio’s first bowl game since 1968. He was voted the Mid-American Conference’s coach of the year after leading Ohio to an 9-5 record in 2006. Ohio was 4-7 in 2005, his first season.

Solich enters the 2008 campaign 18th nationally in winning percentage (.675) among active major college head coaches with at least five years of experience.

"This may be the best news of the year for our athletic program," Schaus said. "I am elated to ensure Frank Solich being here for the next five years."

Ohio University produced the Mid-American Conference’s top-ranked recruiting class last February, according to MACReportOnline.com.

frank got a raw deal. it good to see him in a place that really appreciates him.

honestly, i'd love for him to turn Ohio into a little powerhouse and run roughshod over the rest of the MAC.

except for buffalo, of course. ;p
