Former Husker Justin Tomerlin passed away?

LINCOLN — Justin Tomerlin maintained some of his Husker football ties.

 

He stayed in touch with Zac Taylor, the former Nebraska quarterback and his junior college roommate. He also had former NU quarterback Jordan Adams working for him at Health Fusion in La Jolla, Calif., where Tomerlin was director of national sales.

 

Family friend Deb Pollock recalled those things Tuesday night in talking about Tomerlin, who died Monday from a head injury suffered in a weekend skateboarding accident. Tomerlin was 27.

 

“It’s just a tragedy,” Pollock said from the home of Mike and Lynn Tomerlin in San Clemente, Calif.

 

Tomerlin was injured skateboarding in front of his La Jolla home Saturday. Pollock said it’s possible that a wheel locked and led to his crash. His roommate heard the noise and found Tomerlin on the ground with trauma to the right side of his face and head.

 

When doctors said they could not repair the injury to his brain, Pollock said, the family kept Tomerlin on life support because he was donating his organs.

 

The family is expecting more than 1,000 people at a memorial service Saturday in San Clemente. Pollock said the family is asking that any donations go to St. Jude’s Research Hospital “because Justin loved kids. Absolutely adored kids.”

 

Both Pollock and San Clemente High football coach Eric Patton said Tomerlin had a lust for life.

 

“At times like that, you just remember the great potential he had,” Patton said. “He had a great attitude. Kind of always on the edge all the time — maybe a little too much — but he always had a good time.”

 

Tomerlin, a tight end who signed with Florida State out of high school, was part of the Huskers’ high-profile 2005 recruiting class after transferring from Butler (Kan.) Community College with Taylor. Tomerlin redshirted in 2005, then appeared briefly in three games in 2006 before being dismissed from the team by former NU head coach Bill Callahan that October.

A good guy in life, and a hero in death. While tragically short, Justin's legacy will be another chance at life for several strangers. Huge props to the young man for donating his organs.

I find this so hard to believe. Truly a sad, sad tragedy. I guess things like this can happen to anyone.
