The "Fire Bo" guys would have wanted to fire Coach Osborne too.

Recommended Posts

This concept of people who want Bo fired are the same who wanted Osborne fired are false, Osborne won conference titles and got to BSC bowl games and recrutied elite talent.

Yeah and the college football landscape has changed quite a bit since Osborne was the coach at Nebraska. As one example, the amount of schollys is limited, makes a huge different in the grand scheme of things. You don't think Bo would love to have a larger amount of schollys to give out?

Yeah its a lot tougher, number of scholarships, recruiting rules, conference championship games, lowering the bar for educationally challenged kids gone ... much more difficult.

Osborne's first year as head coach was 1973.

Nebraska was named co champions in 1975 (Osborne's 3rd season) but that was only because Nebraska and Oklahoma both ended the year 6-1 in conference play. BUT OU won the head to head.

Nebraska didn't win the conference again until they were co-champions in 1978 (Osborne's 6th season) again tied with Oklahoma. This time Nebraska won the head to head though. So it took Osborne 6 seasons to win a "real" conference championship. . (and then lost the rematch in the bowl game. In today's terms that means a loss in a rematch in the CCG which equals no Nebraska conference title)

Osborne's first unshared conference championship under Osborne wasn't until 1981 (Osborne's 9th season)

In Osborne's era terms Bo already has a conference championship. - He would have gotten a share of it with Oklahoma State in 2009.

In Bo's era terms Osborne wouldn't have won a conference championship until his 9th season. And that's assuming he didn't lose to any of the Texas teams that year. (Texas went 10-1-1 that season and finished 2nd in the AP poll fwiw)

BTW in 2010 Bo beat every Big 8 team except OU (who beat us by 3 in the CCG) and won all 4 OOC games. The other losses were to teams Osborne wouldn't have played. If Bo was playing a Big 8 Schedule he would have been credited with a 10-1 season, a conference co-championship and wouldn't have played Washington twice as we probably would have been in the Cotton Bowl.

Bo has a MUCH tougher road to travel (especially this year in a new conference) with fewer scholarships, tighter walk-on restrictions (Under Osborne you could have players share lockers and have players watch part of practice from the bleachers in t-shirts while other guys used the uniforms on the field and then have them switch. Now every player scholarship or walk-on has to have their own locker and equipment which means fewer walk-ons) , stiffer academic requirements, stiffer recruiting rules, no prop 48's and far less practice time and he is still comparable to Osborne in the results as far as winning percentage on the field.

It also only took Bo 2 years to beat Oklahoma, Osborne needed 6 years.

Just playing devil's advocate, then explain Solich to me?

Solich had other issues outside of football that cost him his job. To echo what others have said, things are WAY diff. now with schollies, number of players, etc. We had a LOT of players back in the day that wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for the money we could pay them. We were able to get kids to come here and play in the cold because of money. Now we don't have that money or at least aren't allowed to use it and so getting kids to leave those states with nicer weather PLUS the cultures and landscape they're used to is WAY more difficult than it used to be. The rule changes by NCAA are coming full circle and you can see it by watching how many upsets there have been the last couple years. Things are much more even.
